  1. Heart issues are actually slightly more common in Celiacs. :-) A number of us feel like we are having palpitations fairly often, even when there is no irregular heart issues. Or the irregularity is so small that it takes a professional and a LOT more invasive tests to diagnose it (I, my father, and my grandmother all had this). Also, you might want to...
  2. It really can be, yes? I think that when the ingredients can be so much more expensive, and we have no idea how they're going to taste/turn out, if it fails, it's SO frustrating, yeah? I've tried to have my daughter play a large role in helping pick foods and cook. We are trying to make if, well, fun, I guess? We make something and she gets to try and...
  3. I always hear that about rice, too, but so far, I've had reactions to four varieties of rice (brown and white, both), from multiple companies, so I'm thinking it does me in, yeah. And I recall reading somewhere that allergies to rice seem to be on the rise in some countries where it is more of a staple. Haven't tracked that comment down to see how true...
  4. My father was celiac before me, and when I was diagnosed, I was kind of in the same boat as you. Felt like I had at least some idea about what to do, what I could eat, what it would be like, you know? 2 days into the diet, wow did I feel sick! Lots of gastro pain, yeah. tired, icky, grouchy...all sorts of fun stuff. For me, it turned out to be two...
  5. I know that we celiacs often have other sensitivities/allergies, and as a sensitive celiac, a lot of times I've been told that I'm likely reacting to something else and thinking it's gluten. Because a lot of things cause gut reactions. So here's my question - for how many of you is that a possibility? Do you have reactions to gluten that you never get...
  6. Do you know if you have any corn issues? I know a lot of corn allergic folks have to avoid frozen veggies because of the citric acid that is often present. It's usually created by bacteria that is fed corn syrup, and the collection process doesn't always get rid of the corn completely enough for really sensitive corn allergic folks. And...white rice...
  7. We challenged my son. Did it after 1 year gluten free, for a little under 2 weeks only, because he started having symptoms pretty quickly. Yeah, I'd say go with a single food if you do challenge - a single food that has nothing you haven't been eating before the challenge. But my son was the only one we had diagnosed by symptoms, too. The rest of us...
  8. When I went gluten free, I had much more trouble with sugar, too. Since then, I've been diagnosed by blood test as being allergic to sugar cane, and found out something. If you look on the gluten free products, they typically have sugar cane juice, evaporated cane juice, but rarely just 'sugar.' Sugar is so processed that there is hardly any of the sugar...
  9. I do not know the logistics, but I have definitely heard of others who have this. It's like as soon as the gluten hits the stomach it set off the fast forward button. Sort of the emergency 'Gluten alert, dump it all! Now, now, now!' It's not my own issue, but you definitely don't seem to be alone in this.
  10. My own personal opinion would be no, unless you are having sharp pain or burning in the abdominal area (could be a sign of ulcers, you know?). I'd go gluten free, and if that doesn't take care of everything, THEN I might think about a scope to see if there are any other problems. I got scoped BEFORE my blood tests, for something else entirely, but when...
  11. What I've seen as potential problems with this type of issue: 1) possibly you've become more sensitive to gluten. Some celiacs seem to start having reactions to gluten that previously didn't bother them. Your tests can still look good with you having symptoms, by the way. Dropping processed food for a bit to see if it helps can help track it down. ...
  12. I've always brought my food to these things. Many hotels will let you have a fridge in your room if you inform them that you need it for a medically restricted diet, most of the time free of charge. They also may let you keep your food in the hotel fridge for the same reason. It's kind of crummy to only pack cold foods, but that's been the easiest...
  13. With my first pregnancy, I had vomiting and nausea for most of the pregnancy. Second time, had it too. That time, I'd researched like mad and hunted down every possible obscure MS cure ever, LOL. I'd totally go with the 'eating what you crave' deal. That worked with one of my pregnancies - if I craved it, i could eat it and no nausea or vomiting. If...
  14. Sadly, there's a new study on it. I came across this reference to it, in january 2010: Open Original Shared Link Kind of a bummer, yeah?

    ARCHIVED Does Anyone Feel Good

after going gluten free, I felt like crud. I had to cut out some foods it turned out I'm allergic to - I don't get hives, but have fatigue and other issues. That helped. I had to lower my gluten intake to lower than the gluten free standard. that helped a lot. A question for you - do you know if you are one of the 10-15% of celiacs who react to gluten...
  17. I hadn't heard that! Is it that you're seeing more celiacs who are having oat issues, or is it studies or doctors that are saying this? If you had any links, I'd be very interested in seeing them.
  18. Yup. The good news is that the gluten doesn't multiply like germs, or mix into a substance like a liquid might. It just drops there and sits tight. So if you dropped a crumb in the jam yourself from above, and it wasn't from a knife using the same jam, maybe you could scoop off the top of the jam and be okay. There could be gluten crumbs smaller than...

ARCHIVED I Want To Smack My Doctor!

So sorry that you got stuck with Dr. Idiot. :-( Okay, here's just a slew of thoughts that might/ might not apply. 1) on top of the vitamin B, might look at vitamin D levels too. If you get a supplement, vitamin D3 is the type you want to look for. If you're in an area where December is winter, they might be getting lower. 2) Can you think...
  20. Yeah, they should be. As far as I understand the whole gluten free oats issue, the issue is that oats and wheat are so often grown, harvested, and processed together that you simply couldn't get oats without wheat gluten unless you did it on purpose. So any oats not grown with wheat, or harvested/processed with wheat, should be gluten-free (I believe. Someone...
  21. I can totally understand that - and I agree, that's a good thing. I can remember that first shopping trip after going gluten free, so overwhelming. Just reading the labels alone felt impossible. It's something that I think I have to be more aware of, at times, because my family had to go SO extreme that it's hard to remember how many people don't. ...
  22. Sure, no problem. It's on the Lundberg website in a couple places. Not the spots where I'd personally think to look for it, though. Open Original Shared Link The information on the above link is in the slide show. They also had a recent blog post in January where they talked about their cover crops: EDIT: whoops, screwed up the link there, at first...
  23. To be really blunt re: intolerances/allergies and solid introduction - I don't personally believe doctors have a clue yet. I've seen studies that say hold off on introducing allergens because you'll be more likely to have your child develop an allergy if you don't. And I've seen studies that say don't hold off on introducing allergens, because you need to...
  24. Hi! thanks for your thoughts about the oral allergy syndrome. I have googled it in the past. This weird burning tongue and mouth thing has been going on since July 2009!! No one knows what it is, except maybe inflammation of the GI tract from stem to stern (LOL) I had allergy testing done--all foods, all trees, all molds, etc....and I have NO allergies!! I know, I said H...

  25. So, so true. I've had this thing since I was in my teens and wasn't diagnosed until I was 38. Then my daughter wouldn't have been diagnosed except we insisted she be tested after my diagnosis. Add on to that the kids of numerous cousins of mine who are all having stomach pain and their doctors ALL have told the parents that their kids are just suffering from...
