  1. I'm just curious about how it was 20 years ago starting to be gluten-free. It must have been incredibly hard. Did you get any good advice from Drs, dietiticians, books? What about food labeling? Your food choices must have really been limited. I can see the changes in the labeling since being diagnosed 13 months ago. The internet, especially this site...
  2. Is it true that restaurants have to display their ingredients? I thought the bill only addressed food labels in grocery stores?
  3. Dear Tasha, My only positive blood test was an elevated gliadin IGA. My biopsy was negative, no damage to villi, and negative for Celiac gene. After being on a gluten-free diet for a year my GI doc wants me to go back on gluten. He doesn't think I have or ever will have Celiac disease. I was treated for environmental allergies for years ...
  4. I have been eating these lately and feel like I have been glutened, I called the company ( Dole) and they said all of their fruits in cans and plastic are definitely gluten-free. However the label says they are packaged in Thailand and they contain citric acid. I know citric acid is OK in the US but what about overseas? It says on the bottle that the...
  5. All of your symptoms reminded me of mine. For 9 months I was afraid to out alone, afraid to drive in heavy traffic, I couldn't go out to events and socialize. I always feeling like I might pass out or get sick. Your anxiety levels are very high and my best advice is don't push ypurself, try to limit your work if possible, things do get better but it...
  6. I urge you to have the scope. I'm so glad my GI doc insisted upon it. I tested neg for celiac, my villi were not damaged but they found Barrett's Ring around the esophagus. It is caused by a weak sphincter and the acid "backs up" (reflux) and splashes up into the esophagus. In time this could turn to cancer so I have to be scoped yearly. I urge anyone...
  7. Deb, This is all new to me. My husband and I are experimenting with Betty Hagemann's Featherlight Mix. It contains rice, tapioca, and cornstarch+potato flour. The tapioca flour has less (carbs) than the rice, and cornstarch even less than both. He made some apple pies with sweet and low which worked out well for me. You have to really read...
  8. It depends on what you have eaten in the previous 2 hours. If I eat anything with white rice flour my BG will climb 60 points in 2 hours. Some foods have low glycemic levels. Meats and most vegetables will not raise my levels. It is a 2 hour reading window. Hope this helps. The best way to check is in the morning after an 8 hour fast, this way you will...
  9. Tom, My genetic tests were all negative, I don't have the genes. My ancestry is all northern European, mostly German pioneers who came early in the 1700's. I did have a gg grandmother from Wales. MY mother and grandmother both had digestive problems. My mother is 94 and suffers from Dementia and Trygeminal Neuralgia, which is another good reason...
  10. Shai, Thanks for your reply. I took Lexapro 1/2 tab for 7 days. I took it at bedtime. It helped me sleep for a few hours but I couldn't get fully awake the next day. I do all the driving, because my husband has no patience and I prefer to drive. I didn't feel safe behind the wheel so I stopped it. I took Amitryptiline for almost a year but...
  11. I've been following your posts and it brought back a lot of memories of starting the gluten free diet. I, too, had a lot of chills, not feeling well, laying in a fetal position for hours at a time. My poor husband thought I was dying, he couldn't do enough for me. Finally with his support, cooking, and shopping I slowly started to improve. We learned...
  12. Mariann, Just a thought, are you sure the headaches and abdominal pain are connected or are there two different issues? Your headaches/vertigo sound like the problems I have whenever I have fluid in my ears and is sometimes accompanied by sinusitis. Is the headache more on one side? If it is over both eyes your sinuses could be infected, sometimes...
  13. Garneir Fructis for shampoo and Cover Girl makeup.
  14. I had a good experience while riding on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. We stopped at Denny's in Breezwood and spoke to the manager about gluten-free foods. They have a list (not on the menu) about what foods contain the common allergens. It was a good time to be there, they weren't busy. I asked them to clean the grill and use clean spatulas and I had...
  15. I read an article in the paper tonight about restless leg syndrome. It said a lot of people have found relief by putting a cake of soap in bed with them, for some reason it seems to help. I thought I would give it a try next time.
  16. I saw my gastroenteroligist last week and he threw me a curve, I'd appreciate your input on this. I had an elevated IGA, biopsy was neg., no damage to villi, but I did have severe acid reflux, bloating, and other IBS types of symptoms, including pain and constipation. After a year on the gluten-free diet and 6mos DF, I am doing well, lost 25 lbs and...
  17. Why not get a monitor and test yourself when this happens, then you will know what is happening and can give the doctor something concrete to go on?
  18. I had a large nodule on the left side of my thyroid. It was benign but they removed the whole left side because the tissue was all dead, the gland was destroying itself (autoimmune disease) and I have to take Levoxyl everyday to keep the other side from doing the same. When the nodule was growing (unknowingly) I experienced a lot of tachycardia (rapid...
  19. sorry my last post got messed up, I tried to fix it but I can't. celiac3270, if you are out there can you help?....judy
  20. Hi, I am planning on testing with Enterolab. I have a problem with Gluten and Dairy. I just saw my GI Doc and we went round and round on these issues on Monday. He said I could not be casein (dairy) intolerant because it would have shown up as a baby. He told me to take the Lactaid tablets but I won't do it because I still get gassy and have numerous...
  21. Hi, I took Levsin sporadically for over one year, I don't need it now and as the others have said the dry mouth was a big issue. I found after a few months the cramps subsided. I never had a big problem with diarrhea, mine was with constipation. My stools were all different colors at first, my GI doctor said not to worry about the color only if...
  22. If your looking for pills, Citracel tablets are gluten-free, powder is not. I've found that they are cheaper ay Walmarts.
  23. One of my first symptoms was itchy, watery, red eyes, sometimes had sharp pains in them. I was treated for environmental allergies, but my eyes never felt better until I went gluten- free. Now that is a symptom which occurs when ever I unknowingly eat gluten. I've never had any discharge, sounds like an infertion.
  24. Hi, It took me 9 months to actually start feeling better. Because I was diagnosed in my early 60's, I had been sick for a long time. Also I stubbornly refused to stop dairy, I kept trying soy, rice, goat's milk. When I finally gave up dairy I started to really feel better, no more joint pain, sinus headaches, foggy head feeling. Keep at it, there...
  25. I drink gluten-free peppermint tea or Pepto Bismol. Also I have an Rx for NuLev if the pain/spasms get bad.
