  1. Yes, so true! Even with my in-laws who are trying to understand for the sake of my son, keep asking "can he have this? Well, what about sugar? I just don't get this."
  2. My son was recently diagnosed and we just met with a dietician at Nationwide Children's Hospital who has dealt with this for 20+ years. This is what she said concerning labels. In the US, the top 8 allergens must be listed if present (whether bolded in the ingredients list or in the contains: statement). Wheat is one of those allergens. That leaves rye, barley...
  3. Each pregnant was different for me but I had a few weeks of really bad morning sickness with my last pregnancy. A friend suggested plain potato chips and lemonade. It didn't sound appealing but it did seem to help. I was desperate, nothing else was working. I did lose a little weight at that time. But don't worry, you'll be packing on the pounds soon enough...
  4. Wow, a lot's going on with this post. I'm sorry you're having to go through all this. A part of me can understand - to an extent - where your family is coming from. As far as not understanding that even a crumb is too much and just not getting it. But not wanting to learn or be considerate, that's totally wrong in my book. As for cross contamination, my son...
  5. Hi Erin, two's a rough age! We're just starting the gluten-free diet too (4 year old son confirmed diagnosis last week). My bill has definitely gone up but I'm trying to slim it down. I remember KISS - keep it simple silly. Not sure where I got that but it's stuck! Breakfast is cereal. That's what my son loves to have and what he'll eat. He loves EnviroKidz...
  6. My son's been gluten free for one week (nothing to those doing it for much longer!). He's doing great. Asking if he can have food and not feeling down about it at all if he can't (he's four). He's been chowing all the gluten-free alternatives so far. His younger brother is getting kind of miffed because he can't have the $$$ cereal! We had to deal with Halloween...
  7. Sure, acid reflux can be caused by a lot of things, including dairy. I had to cut out dairy for my baby (who's reflux is worse by the way when I consume dairy) and I actually noticed I felt better without dairy! I never had a reflux problem except during pregnancies and following the birth of my third this summer it never went away. But I know dairy makes...
  8. I think I'd do the same as you concerning your first daughter choosing to test at a later age. If she gets that sick and gluten-free obviously works then ok. For the baby, my daughter (4 months) reacts to dairy and soy in the same way - gassy, diarrhea, green/mucousy stools, never sleeps, and eczema (way worse with soy). Dairy I was able to get on top...
  9. Hi Karas Mom, I can't help you with the colonoscopy but my four year old son just had an endoscopy. He did great and everything went really, really fast. He didn't seem too nervous until we had to leave him but the doctors and nurses said he did great and hopped up right on the bed in the procedure room. The GI doc was out in about ten minutes (maybe even...
  10. I don't know about the specific brand you posted but I use grapseed oil in baking and in other stuff (like as part of a chicken salad recipe). It has a neutral taste so it's good for baking. Works good, you just need to use less than you would butter. Also, I'm not sure about gluten-free baking as I started using the oil over the summer having to go dairy...
  11. Many thanks! This is our first Halloween (actually I received my son's diagnosis confirmation tonight). Great to have this on hand.
  12. Thanks for the recipe! I'll try it. My kids love graham crackers and I was wondering if a replacement would be good. Graham crackers were the first thing my son ate after gatorade (he doesn't have to be gluten-free).
  13. That's a great idea! I read somewhere a long time ago about how eggs are good for getting over colds/flu more quickly. I wonder? Thanks!
  14. I just assumed regular flour. There's no way to tell for sure. If anyone has insights, I'd like to hear. I don't much care for the breaded meat anyway. Once in a while is ok but a whole box of breaded meat?
  15. Glad you're getting back to your self. I went to Meijer today too. It was a bummer. They had three things to sample: Glutino's pretzel sticks and crackers and some vegetable soup. No coupons whatsoever. I did pick up the list of Meijer brand gluten-free foods. And already there was a mistake. The tator tots are coated in wheat. Oh well. Worth a shot.
  16. I just checked out this site (thanks by the way!) and was excited to see a pick up right in my town. But then I was bummed because next month's box are just breaded meats. Maybe December...
  17. Thanks Bud's Mom! I wonder how our nutritionist will be? Even the GI doctor was talking about shampoos, lotions, how some gluten-free foods aren't necessarily gluten-free, etc. We'll see. I have to figure out how to approach his preschool. I'm waiting the next doctor visit so I have all the facts before I go to his teachers. Right now I'm just cleaning out...
  18. Thanks for the ideas. Chicken and rice soup will probably go over well (he likes chicken and noodle). Popsicles - of course! Pudding maybe as well as the cereal. I think I drew a blank because of my own recent craving and couldn't get around it - a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup (and I can't have it because of the dairy!). And substitutes are not...
  19. We're starting on a gluten free diet and my one child is sick with the flu. It's making me realize what comfort foods to give my oldest who can't have gluten. I'm sure he'll be sick soon... He's getting *D* today which usually picks up just before he gets sick. So, for sick stomach or not wanting to eat much? He doesn't do jello, mashed potatoes. Soup is...
  20. I called my local Meijer and it sounds like all of them. They weren't overly helpful but from what the woman said it's one of those deals where someone's in the grocery section with free samples/info. Something they seem to have every time I'm there. "Would you like to try *food* today?"
  21. I use rice milk (trader joe's unsweetened). On cereal and in baking. I don't drink straight from a glass but I could. It's ok if I need to take medicine or something. My parents like almond milk (and not the rice) but I haven't tried.
  22. Thank you for the suggestions. We'll give them a try. And just a comment, we're not considering homeschooling because of the diagnosis. That was already out there way before all this happened. I just think it'll be easier to control the diet if we hs vs the hassle of public school while he's young. But glad you recanted and want to be supportive. Another...
  23. Hi, my daughter (4 months) doesn't have a problem with wheat but she does to dairy so maybe this will help. She'll react within hours. And she'll keep reacting for about a week from one exposure. There's different phases to it but I think I have it down now.
  24. Thanks! We were nervous before hand, especially my husband but once he was in, we barely had time to be nervous, the doctor was so quick! I'm sure once we're over this initial hump of rehauling the kitchen and navigating the grocery aisles, it'll be easier. Still wish I could skip that part.
  25. Hi there, my four year old has been diagnosed with celiacs (he had his biopsy today) and so we're needing to get wrapped around the gluten-free diet. I've read many posts so I hope that will help as we dive into this lifetsyle. However, I have a few questions that I don't feel sure about the answer. Any help would be appreciated, even if I didn't mention...
