  1. I find most fine dining restaurants and B&B's are knowledgeable about Celiac disease and the gluten-free diet. When I travel to Annapolis Royal, I stay at the Bread and Roses Inn Open Original Shared Link They keep gluten free pancake mix and are careful about cross-contamination. I have stayed at the Tattingstone Inn in Wolfville without any problems...
  2. I heard that Tim's chili is gluten-free. Does anybody know?
  3. I tried my first Udi's bread on a trip to Boulder in December. I flew back with a loaf and a half stuffed into my hand luggage
  4. I buy Food for Life gluten-free soft shell tortillas. They are available in the health food section of Superstores in Atlantic Canada. I see they are also available on line at the Open Original Shared Link.
  5. I was diagnosed quite by accident. My doctor decided to test my iron, noticed I was slightly anemic and decided to go for the TTG. Turns out I was a Celiac all my life (diagnosed at age 49). Would never have known except for my doctor's insightful hypothesis. In Canada, positive blood tests are followed up with an endoscopy. Has this been suggested?
  6. I have to agree with you about Boulder. I completed my trip in December... ate at Turleys, Laudisio, Beau Jo's and Zolo (all excellent). Also 5 or 6 kinds of gluten-free beer at the liquor mart! I thought my home town of Halifax was Celiac friendly, but Boulder takes the prize!
  7. I am one of the ever increasing number of Celiacs diagnosed over the past few years who have little or no symptoms. These discussions certainly raise a dilemma for me. If I do not have obvious symptoms to show I have been gluttened, how do I know what my sensitivity is to cross contamination issues like this one. My approach has been to err on the side...
  8. Not only should they put 'made in a facility that processes wheat' on the label, they should remove the information on their website that says they are glutten free. Open Original Shared Link Doug
  9. I asked a similar question back in November...see link called Traveling to Boulder We had a wonderful time. The highlights are listed below. Laudisio's was our favorite, but you can't be in a hurry. They had a separate gluten-free menu which included many options...pasta, etc. plus the bread sticks were a nice touch. Beau Jo's has one of the better...
  10. The list keeps growing. I am originally from Moncton, now living in Halifax. To be more precise Cole Harbour (Sid Crosbyville). I was diagnosed 2 years ago. I am a silent Celiac, which means I don't get any symptoms. That is why I spend much time exploring this forum. I don't know if I am making mistakes unless I hear it from others. Cheers, DougE
  11. Thanks again all. Looks like this will be a really good trip DougE
  12. Good question. I hear comments like "A tiny amount of gluten doesn't affect me". I have no symptoms, yet my doctor told me to avoid any amount of gluten. If my symptoms (or lack thereof) are unrelated to the potential damage to my intestines, is it not dangerous to assume anybody can tell they are not being harmed by gluten just because they do not experience...
  13. Thanks for the responses. I have been in Boulder once before (before my diagnosis) and am really looking forward to returning. It is such a beautiful place. DougE
  14. I am going on a business trip to Boulder CO. I will not likely get a chance to go to Denver, so am looking for gluten-free dining options just within Boulder. Is there gluten-free beer there? Thanks, DougE
  15. Thanks for the posts. It is a no brainer for me too, but I have few symptoms. I just wondered if anyone had such severe reactions to gluten that this would be a decision requiring some consideration... more from the perspective of a first aid provider.
  16. My father had no symptoms until he was age 60. In fact we did not know he had Celiac until they diagnosed it after his death due to many auto-immune complications at age 61! I was diagnosed at age 50 though I have no symptoms other than very slight anemia. However considering my dad's story, I take a gluten-free diet very seriously. I don't wish to...
  17. I was underweight my whole life. Then when I went GL at the age of 50, I gained 15 to 20 lbs and have been stable at that. I have been lucky as I am now at a good weight. A friend of mine who was underweight before going gluten-free, gained too much weight afterwards and had to work at taking the extra weight off. I suspect everyone is a bit different...
  18. Hi, I am new to this forum. I was diagnosed with Celiac 2 years ago, and am finding a lot of these discussions interesting. Here is a question: What if you had a mild heart attack and someone tried to offer you aspirin as recommended by the St John Ambulance First Aid courses. Would you accept it? If I am not mistaken, most brands are not gluten-free...
  19. This did surprise me too because I read the newsletters as well. The guide also says that "...in Canada, current labeling regulations do not yet require a declaration of 'wheat' when used in the manufacturing of MSG." DougE
  20. Hi all, I had to check out this thread because I am confused too. The Canadian Celiac Association publishes a booklet of ingredients and labels them as either "Allowed", "Not allowed" or "Check?". MSG had been labeled as allowed, but the latest publication says "Check". The explanation is that MSG produced in North America is gluten-free, but that in...
