ARCHIVED Need Support In Nova Scotia Canada
DougE replied to judilynn's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hi Krista, I assume that you are living in Nova Scotia since you are bringing up this old post. It is a big shock when the initial diagnosis arrives, but I can tell you it gets better. There is a lot of support in Nova Scotia. The NS Chapter of the Canadian Celiac Association has support groups in Halifax, Sydney, Baddeck, Cheticamp and New Glasgow... -
ARCHIVED Is There Something Called "contamination Celiac"?
DougE replied to ljgs's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
This looks suspicious to me. I often hear people with Celiac say, they can have a little bit of this, or there is no problem if I just remove the croutons from the salad. If that was the case, I shouldn't worry about eating gluten at all. I have hardly any noticable reaction. However, just because I don't feel anything, doesn't mean that the damage isn... -
ARCHIVED The Gluten Was "fermented" Out Of The Sauce
DougE replied to Dee777's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
And since it's a Canadian Company, it wouldn't hurt to report it to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. -
ARCHIVED Tips For A New Celiac In Halifax, Ns - Canada!
DougE replied to Nova Scotian Celiac's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hi, I live in Cole Harbour and I eat out quite a bit. I can add a few more restaurants to the list: Jamieson's in Cole Harbour - the owner is gluten sensitive and is very aware. They also carry gluten-free beer and have an excellent flourless cake. Brooklyn Warehouse (Windsor St) also carries gluten-free beer. Pizzatown is a chain which has a... -
ARCHIVED Any Celiac(s) From Canada
DougE replied to Gerri's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hi collgwg, Sorry to hear about your ordeal with the sausages. I do have some good news. Sweet Williams sausages made right here in Nova Scotia are all gluten-free. They sell them at some of the farmers markets. -
ARCHIVED Worcestershire Souce Substitute
DougE replied to agentmm's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just went to their US website Open Original Shared Link Nothing to worry about in the ingredients. But on the Canadian site Open Original Shared Link The first ingredient is malt vinegar. -
ARCHIVED Several choices for gluten-free beer - Florida Times-Union (blog)
DougE replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
Consider yourself lucky. With the taxes here in Atlantic Canada, I pay about $18 for a six pack of gluten-free. I would have to say that the best gluten-free beer I had was called New Planet made in Boulder CO. I got to try it on a trip there. Wish it was available here. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Beer In Ontario
DougE replied to K-Dawg's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I am surprised to hear that they cannot call this a gluten-free beer "...to comply with Health Canada's labelling rules that say anything called a beer must contain at least some barley or wheat." Messag -

Thank-you Skylark. These lists will be a definite help. I will be staying at the Manchester Grand Hyatt which as I understand is quite close to the Gaslamp district. Sometimes I travel with a definite list of restaurants that I will stick to and sometimes I just go and hope I can find a place that is knowledgeable about food sensitivies. CAn you comment...

Hi all, I will be spending a week in San Diego in March. I probably will not be getting out of the city much, but may take a trip to La Jola. Just wondering if someone can make some restaurant suggestions for SD. Thanks, DougE

ARCHIVED Processed On Equipment That Also Processes Wheat
DougE replied to quincy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
What Kinnikinnick are saying in this video is that they took the machine apart and cleaned it thoroughly. In fact it took them 4 months to clean the machine. I suppose if you took the time to take your household toaster completely apart and clean each part, you could probably get away with a used toaster. It just isn't practical with a $40 appliance. -
ARCHIVED How Careful Are You With Pots/pans/dishes/counters?
DougE replied to tinkity's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I too have a favorite cast iron pan. I kept using it, but it no longer touches gluten. I hope after three years it is pretty much gluten-free. Other than that, I replaced my wooden spoons and cutting boards. -
ARCHIVED Sensitivity Levels Among Us
DougE replied to SuperMolly's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi SuperMolly, Thanks for asking this question. I am one of those with Celiac who does not experience significant symptoms. I rely on others to tell me if certain products are safe. Otherwise, I have no way of knowing. For example, I am told that 90 percent of Celiacs can eat gluten-free oats, but I do not dare try them. How would I know if I am sensitive... -
The way I understand it is that if they are labelled as spice, the can only contain pure spice. Otherwise they would have to be called seasonings. Do they call it steak spice or steak seasoning?

ARCHIVED Xanthan Gum Excerpt From Wikipedia
DougE replied to Trymester's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Good Point Peter. I just checked the references on Wikipedia and found the source. It is from a site called AllAllergy.net. It looks like it is hosted by a group called "Allergy Resources International". Has anyone heard of them? Anyway, here is the excerpt: "In the U.S., there are 2 major suppliers of xanthan gum. One uses soy as the fermentation... -
ARCHIVED Xanthan Gum Excerpt From Wikipedia
DougE replied to Trymester's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Say it ain't so! -
My concern with a facility that processes wheat is that they are likely using wheat flour in some way. Yes, my home contains wheat products but they are already baked. I do not keep wheat flour in my home because once it gets in the air it can stay suspended there for some time. Sorry, I can't quote sources, but I am willing to bet that the time flour...

ARCHIVED Food Recalls - Is Anything Safe?
DougE replied to ElseB's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just learned about this recall myself. I loved the brown rice tortillas. I am one of those hidden Celiacs...I have no symptoms. Kind of scary ain't it? -
I for one am happy to have people take up the gluten-free diet as a fad. The more demand for gluten free food, the greater the variety will appear at the grocery store.

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Pasta
DougE replied to Mj-Toronto's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Personally I prefer the corn pasta although it is pricey. I buy Mrs Leepers corn pasta at Atlantic Superstore which is the same as Loblaws I think. -
I cannot answer all of your questions but I will say this... Your doctor's assessment of symptoms of celiacs is dated thinking. By far the most frequent symptom is anemia. Many celiacs (myself included) have virtually no symptoms. I was diagnosed thanks to a perceptive doctor who saw the word celiac in my father's autopsy report.

Another complication for us celiacs with no appreciable symptoms. How do we know when we ate too much gluten?
