  1. Hi Krista, I assume that you are living in Nova Scotia since you are bringing up this old post. It is a big shock when the initial diagnosis arrives, but I can tell you it gets better. There is a lot of support in Nova Scotia. The NS Chapter of the Canadian Celiac Association has support groups in Halifax, Sydney, Baddeck, Cheticamp and New Glasgow...
  2. This looks suspicious to me. I often hear people with Celiac say, they can have a little bit of this, or there is no problem if I just remove the croutons from the salad. If that was the case, I shouldn't worry about eating gluten at all. I have hardly any noticable reaction. However, just because I don't feel anything, doesn't mean that the damage isn...
  3. And since it's a Canadian Company, it wouldn't hurt to report it to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
  4. Hi, I live in Cole Harbour and I eat out quite a bit. I can add a few more restaurants to the list: Jamieson's in Cole Harbour - the owner is gluten sensitive and is very aware. They also carry gluten-free beer and have an excellent flourless cake. Brooklyn Warehouse (Windsor St) also carries gluten-free beer. Pizzatown is a chain which has a...
  5. Hi collgwg, Sorry to hear about your ordeal with the sausages. I do have some good news. Sweet Williams sausages made right here in Nova Scotia are all gluten-free. They sell them at some of the farmers markets.
  6. I just went to their US website Open Original Shared Link Nothing to worry about in the ingredients. But on the Canadian site Open Original Shared Link The first ingredient is malt vinegar.
  7. Consider yourself lucky. With the taxes here in Atlantic Canada, I pay about $18 for a six pack of gluten-free. I would have to say that the best gluten-free beer I had was called New Planet made in Boulder CO. I got to try it on a trip there. Wish it was available here.
  8. I am surprised to hear that they cannot call this a gluten-free beer "...to comply with Health Canada's labelling rules that say anything called a beer must contain at least some barley or wheat." Messag
  9. Thanks again. Doug
  10. Thanks Sanjay, Looks like a good article. Doug
  11. I do both kayaking and backpacking. Here are some of the items I take with me. For hiking: Pepperoni - Make sure it's gluten-free. Baby carrots Nuts and dried fruit Bakery on Maine cereal which I treat as trail mix Cheese - Individually wrapped ones keep better Glutino granola bars or Lara bars Rice or nut crackers The pepperoni keeps quite...
  12. Thank-you Skylark. These lists will be a definite help. I will be staying at the Manchester Grand Hyatt which as I understand is quite close to the Gaslamp district. Sometimes I travel with a definite list of restaurants that I will stick to and sometimes I just go and hope I can find a place that is knowledgeable about food sensitivies. CAn you comment...
  13. Hi all, I will be spending a week in San Diego in March. I probably will not be getting out of the city much, but may take a trip to La Jola. Just wondering if someone can make some restaurant suggestions for SD. Thanks, DougE
  14. What Kinnikinnick are saying in this video is that they took the machine apart and cleaned it thoroughly. In fact it took them 4 months to clean the machine. I suppose if you took the time to take your household toaster completely apart and clean each part, you could probably get away with a used toaster. It just isn't practical with a $40 appliance.
  15. I too have a favorite cast iron pan. I kept using it, but it no longer touches gluten. I hope after three years it is pretty much gluten-free. Other than that, I replaced my wooden spoons and cutting boards.
  16. Hi SuperMolly, Thanks for asking this question. I am one of those with Celiac who does not experience significant symptoms. I rely on others to tell me if certain products are safe. Otherwise, I have no way of knowing. For example, I am told that 90 percent of Celiacs can eat gluten-free oats, but I do not dare try them. How would I know if I am sensitive...
  17. The way I understand it is that if they are labelled as spice, the can only contain pure spice. Otherwise they would have to be called seasonings. Do they call it steak spice or steak seasoning?
  18. Good Point Peter. I just checked the references on Wikipedia and found the source. It is from a site called AllAllergy.net. It looks like it is hosted by a group called "Allergy Resources International". Has anyone heard of them? Anyway, here is the excerpt: "In the U.S., there are 2 major suppliers of xanthan gum. One uses soy as the fermentation...
  19. My concern with a facility that processes wheat is that they are likely using wheat flour in some way. Yes, my home contains wheat products but they are already baked. I do not keep wheat flour in my home because once it gets in the air it can stay suspended there for some time. Sorry, I can't quote sources, but I am willing to bet that the time flour...
  20. I just learned about this recall myself. I loved the brown rice tortillas. I am one of those hidden Celiacs...I have no symptoms. Kind of scary ain't it?

    ARCHIVED Fad Diets

I for one am happy to have people take up the gluten-free diet as a fad. The more demand for gluten free food, the greater the variety will appear at the grocery store.
  22. Personally I prefer the corn pasta although it is pricey. I buy Mrs Leepers corn pasta at Atlantic Superstore which is the same as Loblaws I think.
  23. I cannot answer all of your questions but I will say this... Your doctor's assessment of symptoms of celiacs is dated thinking. By far the most frequent symptom is anemia. Many celiacs (myself included) have virtually no symptoms. I was diagnosed thanks to a perceptive doctor who saw the word celiac in my father's autopsy report.
  24. Another complication for us celiacs with no appreciable symptoms. How do we know when we ate too much gluten?
