  1. Hi Sara, Semolina is wheat and a no-no for celiacs. Caramel color/flavor could be corn or wheat or something else. There is no way to really know unless you call the manufacturer. I have heard that Kraft will put in parentheses what their caramel is from, but most places don't list it. Hth, Merika
  2. Laura, Thank you SOOOOO much. This is indeed the very sort of book I had been looking for the last few years. It is excellent - well written, intelligent, and insightful. I highly recommend it to ANYONE here who has suffered the symptoms of celiac and still has problems. It's weakest chapter was IMO the one on marriage and partners, I think because...
  3. If you have leaky gut (typical with celiac), you most likely have other food allergies caused by it. So even by removing gluten, you will not feel 100% better. Some of the allergies will go away after a while because your body is healing. Some will stay with you. Go online to google the "eight common allergens" to find likely culprits. YOu can also run...
  4. Tell him that a lot has changed since the days his father was diagnosed. Made right, almost all Mexican food is/can be gluten-free, most Asian food (esp. cooked at home), and the gluten-free-substitutes like pastas are pretty darned good. Back in the old days, they told people to just eat bananas and potatoes, it seems. Blech! Boring! If you/he shops at...
  5. Folic acid keeps you awake? I had trouble sleeping for a few months, never thought it would be from the vitamin. Mind you, I didn't get squat done, just felt very very tired during the day. Merika (and mine was gluten-free)
  6. I was diagnosed with celiac when my ds was almost 2 yrs. At first, everything with my ds stayed the same. But I realized I could not (would not) prepare gluten foods for him and also have crumbs and sticky gluten fingers all over the house. In addition, he was having some allergy symptoms/possible slight celiac symptoms, so he went gluten-free. If your...
  7. Hi Terri, oh sorry, btdt means been there done that. Merika
  8. Hi Wendy Hmmmmm....maybe it wasn't the arsenic, it was THE DONUTS!!!! Merika
  9. What month is it in- July or Aug? Thanks!
  10. Did anyone here read those VC Andrews books in the 1980s? Then you'll know what I'm referring to here Sometimes when telling an acquaintance who asks what is celiac, or what's it like, or what does it mean...and the situation doesn't call for a lengthy accurate medical description, I say that I have a genetic disorder that makes my body read gluten...
  11. PS. Why is it that Americans believe the only way to access medical care is through the insurance provider? We can go to whoever we want, whenever we want. We live in a free country. We just need is the $$ to pay the doctor. Some docs even give discounts if you just pay and don't use insurance. Merika Ps. please don't flame that not everyone can afford...
  12. You can always go to a different doc, pay out of pocket and get an accurate diagnosis. Then just forget to report it to the insurance company. I think an accurate diagnosis is a worthwhile pursuit, regardless of if you have it covered by insurance or not. With kids, it is a tricky question. You don't want to screw up there insurance options (though WHY...
  13. Yep, ewwwww, but that is how my mind works now. Brain: "is there ANY way this might not be gluten-free....?" Merika
  14. Elonwy, I see from another thread you are in LA. There is a local organization celiac.org (I think) that sponsors annual events, and there are periodic local meetings - on of which is on the westside I think. I've just been to the big events, haven't checked out the little ones yet, but you can call the contact people for them and talk their ear off...
  15. Hey, cool! Pm me Merika
  16. Heart palpitations were one of my first obvious celiac sypmtoms, along with electrolyte imbalance. Eventually, with the help of chinese medicine, it stopped. No one found a cause for mine. i was diagnosed with celiac 12 years later, but I met a woman last year at a celiac event, who had the EXACT same onset symptoms, including these. Hth Merika
  17. have you tried an allergy test (blood, not skin patch) or an elimination diet? My son is allergic to soy (even in minute amounts) and gets very congested. Last winter we rubbed Vicks vap-o-rub on him every night at bed, until we found the vitamin E in a lip balm he was using (because his lips were dry from so much mouth-breathing) was soy. Btw, my ds is ...
  18. Some people have no external symptoms, but internal damage. They are discovered when a relative gets diagnosed with celiac, as all immediate family should also be tested then. Also, sometimes other medical procedures are done, and damage in the intestine is noted. Merika
  19. I had problems too, but mine took several days/weeks to really show up enough for me to say "enough!" ;-) Actually, I think I took them for 2 months. They made my face muscles feel funny and taut in a weird way, and I got dark circles all around my eyes, not just below. Merika
  20. But what about the whole OJ thread last week? I think if the label is more than one ingredient long -ie, milk or oranges - you need to call. OJ is more often than not these days fortified with ????? or flavored or who knows what. As for the neighbor's milk....as long as they didn't drink straight from the container while eating sandwiches or cookies....
  21. The K bread, if I recall correctly, has eggs and/or milk in it. I don't eat eggs, and while I eat cheese, I avoid actual milk. I do hear great things about it I ate the Pepperidge Farm stuff as a kid, but I'm more of a nutty/texture-y spelt bread kind of eater (no, I don't eat it anymore...) The delicate white Food for Life isn't a huge problem...
  22. Hi, I eat this stuff Yep, it can be a b*tch to separate frozen. Take a butter knife and try to pound in between the layers. Sometimes it's easy, sometimes not. Or, defrost it in the fridge. I've found me & my ds can get through a loaf in the fridge before it goes bad. The Brown rice bread they sell stays in its slices much better. And the white...
  23. Hi, Sorry but miso is not gluten free There are different kinds, but typically it is made from barley. In the case of miso soup premade, it can be very hard to tell which type of miso it is. Also, look out for soy sauce which typically has wheat in it, though there are wheat-free versions at the grocery store. Merika
  24. Stephanie, Wow! Good info. How did you find out you were allergic to this mold? Also, that reminds me, some probiotics are grown on substances (wheat?) that are not suitable for celiacs. Merika
