ARCHIVED The Almost "Definitive" Celiac Sticky

I think all of you OC girls should get together and perform this on You Tube. Makes me smile just thinking about it! :D -

ARCHIVED What Are The Benefits Of An Official Diagnosis?
newgfcali replied to WheatChef's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Although I can't find it anywhere in the IRS website, I've read in a number of places that people with confirmed Celiac (letter of proof from a doctor) can deduct the extra cost of gluten-free food from their taxes as a medical expense. In order to take advantage of this, your medical expenses have to exceed 7.5% of your AGI. The amount you can deduct is... -

LOL! Yes, but can you teach me the Thriller dance once you learn it? Always wanted to learn that one. -
ARCHIVED The Almost "Definitive" Celiac Sticky

Thanks for posting this, Janie. Excellent words of advice. I'd just like to add that ALL of these apply to those of us who are non-Celiac gluten intolerant as well. I think a lot of newbies are looking for that magic diagnosis, the LABEL they can hang their hat on, and it's discouraging if all of your tests for Celiac come back negative. That doesn't... -
ARCHIVED Odd Skin Symptom Gluten Related?
newgfcali replied to kyga's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I've had that same skin sensitivity thing since I was in college, which was umpty-ump years ago. It's only recently that I've suspected gluten was the cause. Gluten is almost certainly behind my neuropathy, so why not skin nerve cell damage as well? Makes perfect sense. BTW, I haven't had one instance of skin sensitivity since going gluten free back... -

All great ideas! I've been looking for salad dressing packets but can't find any locally. What brand does Sprouts carry? Maybe I can find them online. -
ARCHIVED Arrrrgh! More Restrictions!
newgfcali replied to newgfcali's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks, Jackie -- you just saved me a phone call. We sound pretty similar. Soy 55, yeast 24, dairy 19 and egg 9 (sqeeek). I'm really happy to hear you're feeling better even after just a couple of weeks. Gives me hope. How did you finally figure out the gluten connection? -
ARCHIVED Arrrrgh! More Restrictions!
newgfcali replied to newgfcali's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm still confused between food intolerant and food allergy. When I react to my intolerant foods, I don't have the hives/histamine reaction (IgE type)... just the GI issues with additional neuro symptoms (IgA). I do have an IgE type allergy to Sulfa drugs and believe me... I would NEVER intentionally take that again! Also, I know I will never go back to gluten... -

Wow! Thanks, Sue! You're really creative and that's what I needed to hear. I did switch to rice milk a couple of weeks ago when I suspected soy, and it's working out well for me. I tried the Rice Vegan cheese and it was pretty awful, so I'll look up your "uncheese" book. "Vice cream" also sounds intriguing. You've given me a lot to "chew" on -- thanks... -
Well, friends, my Enterolab tests just came back and it looks as if soy and dietary yeast are history. Rats! At least I've still got eggs... they squeeked in at a 9 (10 being considered max normal). But yeast and especially soy are definitely no-no's. So now I know why I've been feeling bad again. When I first went gluten and casein free I was feeling...

ARCHIVED Other Strange Symptoms
newgfcali replied to flowerpower12's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Some people experience PN differently and describe it as feeling like you have a sock on your foot when you don't. You can feel your foot, but it's kinda "removed", not a direct sensation. Hard to describe -- does that make sense? -
ARCHIVED Opinions? Ideas?
newgfcali replied to Alsbagalls12's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Another option is to take the Enterolab test. I took it after being gluten free for over three months and my test still came back positive. The antibodies stick around long after the offending gluten is gone. And the Enterolab test is extremely sensitive. They can also test you for other immune reactions, like dairy, soy, yeast, eggs, so you can get a better... -
ARCHIVED New gluten-free Menu At Pfchangs Coming In March :)
newgfcali replied to Darissa's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Just had lunch at PF Changs in Walnut Creek, CA. Great experience. I asked the waiter for the gluten-free menu and it was full of yummy sounding possibilities. Since I'm also watching soy and casein, I asked if they could accommodate, and he said anything could be made however I needed it. I ended up getting the Singapore noodles without the soy and shrimp... -

Remember that poster back in the 70's (those of you who are old enough) of the guy with his head melting onto the table, titled "Stoned Agin"? Well, I'm glutened agin. Don't know what happened, been eating exactly the same foods I've been eating. But last night, whamm-o! Still suffering the consequences today. Drat. The only thing I can come up with...

ARCHIVED Other Strange Symptoms
newgfcali replied to flowerpower12's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
...and I had 1, 3 and 5. There. That's the whole list. Number 3 sounds like peripheral neuropathy, which is nerve damage. It can manifest as a numbness, tingling or even electric shock-like shooting pains. It typically attacks feet and hands, thus the "peripheral" name. I think we probably all had number 5. The "grumblies" I call them. I used to dread... -

What about a coffee grinder? Do you have one of those? It'll work, too. Mushroom... did you make this with real butter? That's one of my no-no's. If you didn't, what did you use to substitute? It looks WONDERFUL! -
ARCHIVED Newly Gluten Free- Should I Colon Cleanse First?
newgfcali replied to acaligal's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you google "gluten free breakfast bar diy" you'll get a whole list of recipes for bars you can make yourself, always cheaper than store-bought, plus you'll KNOW it's totally gluten free. I like cereal so usually have some organic corn flakes with rice milk which is really quick, but not especially cheap. (Hey - I'm worth it!) Maybe try a little... -
ARCHIVED Negative Blood Test (Opinions Needed Please)
newgfcali replied to LePandaRouge's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Panda~ I'm gluten intolerant, per Enterolab tests, and a double DQ1. I do have some GI symptoms, but my main problem is peripheral neuropathy. It's very common for DQ1's to have neurological symptoms like ataxia and neuropathy. Many have no GI symptoms at all... just the neuro problems. So maybe you and your mum are non-Celiac gluten intolerant. It's no... -
Have you heard of Elisabeth Kubler-Ross? She came up with the five stages of dealing with grief, which then expanded into dealing with any life-changing event. They are: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance. So maybe you skipped stage one and charged right into stage two. But know that it's a process we're all going through. Maybe by giving...

ARCHIVED Need Help With Hair--Nutritional Issues
newgfcali replied to starrytrekchic's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Well, that's pretty clear. LOL! So the question becomes, what's not only safe (no soy, no gluten, no casein, blah blah blah) but also GOOD for my hair? I don't mind spending a few bucks but ... you know ... within reason?
