ARCHIVED Question About Gluten Free Products
psawyer replied to CathyG's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Most mainstream cereal products contain gluten as an intentional ingredient in the form of malted barley. Before worrying about shared facilities, check the ingredient list for malt, malt flavor, malt extract or anything else with the WORD malt (not words containing the letters M-A-L-T). Do not be misled by maltodextrin and maltose--they are gluten-free... -
Apple cider vinegar, often listed as simply "vinegar," is safe.

ARCHIVED Philadelphia Cream Cheese
psawyer replied to aeryn's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Maybe it isn't gluten. Is it possible that you have a problem with casein? Do you react to other cheeses? -
If she is newly diagnosed and has damage to the small intestine, then until the healing process makes some progress she may react to anything, even if it is gluten-free. It will take some time. How long varies with age and the extent of the damage to the villi. But think in terms of weeks, or possibly months, before things are back to "normal." Stay strictly...

In North America, the branded drug Fosamax is gluten-free. If a generic version is not it is because of inactive ingredients, but I haven't found one in Canada that isn't gluten-free.

ARCHIVED Hershey's Kisses ~ Canada
psawyer replied to divamomma's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have read the ingredients lists, and have yet to find any variant of the Kisses that lists something that concerns me. Wheat is one of the ten "priority allergens" prescribed by Health Canada which must be disclosed if present. -
ARCHIVED Help! Information Overload!
psawyer replied to amy2011's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
While digestive sypmtoms are common, not everyone with celiac disease gets them. You can have damage to the intestines but not have symptoms. There are many other symptoms which include skin rash (DH) and headaches. -
ARCHIVED Take Out Pizza In Canada (Ontario)
psawyer replied to amy2011's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
We have tried Pizza Pizza and find it okay, but not nearly as good as the ones we make at home with the Gluten Free Pantry mix. Boston Pizza also has a gluten-free option which we enjoy. -
ARCHIVED Test Results Question
psawyer replied to Caeryn23's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
No, no, no and maybe. I suppose that if the blood donor had active celiac disease some antibodies might transfer. Not sure on that. -

ARCHIVED Hershey's Kisses ~ Canada
psawyer replied to divamomma's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
To the best of my knowledge, yes they are gluten-free. I eat them occasionally. -
Here is the applicable Canadian regulation. It applies to food sold in Canada, but food sold outside Canada may not have to adhere to the rule. Food and Drug Regulation B.24.018 No person shall label, package, sell or advertise a food in a manner likely to create an impression that it is gluten-free unless the food does not contain wheat, including...

psawyer replied to TriticusToxicum's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Well, it is a sad day here. No silly. Another big snowfall overnight, and then hearing bad news on our long, long drive in. The news got worse as the morning wore on. Early this morning Toronto Police Sergeant Ryan Russell was murdered in the line of duty when he was apparently Open Original Shared Link The driver was apprehended about an hour later... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Being "over Diagnosed" According To My Gyn
psawyer replied to SaraKat's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I think Rowena's point was that a celiac diagnosis does not require follow-up visits. In essence, it is what the GI who diagnosed me told me: "I cannot do anything more for you. It is now up to you to follow the gluten-free diet." -
My guess is that something in your original questions triggered the stonewall response. I have seen it myself. You ask "what is gluten-free?" and the answer is (for legal reasons) "nothing is gluten-free." Once they have given that response, it is very difficult to get them to say anything that would weaken or appear to contradict the legal disclaimer.

ARCHIVED Maltodextrin?
psawyer replied to Simona19's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Maltodextrin is gluten-free. There is some old incorrect information that continues to circulate. -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Diet Before Upper Endoscopy W/biopsy?
psawyer replied to Arcana's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Going gluten-free in advance of the endoscopy can affect the accuracy of the biopsy. It is not a good idea. I am amazed that the two procedures are not scheduled simultaneously. Once you are prepped and sedated for the colonoscopy, doing an endoscopy requires no additional prep. You should insist that they both be done at the same time. -
ARCHIVED Query From A Newbie On Milk Stabilisers
psawyer replied to Angelwolf's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Welcome! I don't see anything that raises a flag, but label regulations vary by jurisdiction. I am familiar with the rules in Canada and the USA, but the names and spellings of those ingredients suggest that you are somewhere else. -

ARCHIVED Correspondence With Lipton
psawyer replied to TooManyHats's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Others have confirmed in discussions with the vendor that the only change was to the label. -
ARCHIVED Colonoscopy
psawyer replied to Salax's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The damage to the villi caused by celiac disease cannot be detected by colonoscopy. An endoscopy of the duodenum is needed to do that. Is it possible that both an endoscopy and a colonoscopy were done at the same time? The preparation for a colonoscopy is more involved and includes what is needed for the endoscopy. It is prudent to do both, as there may... -
ARCHIVED I Need Help Cooking gluten-free Pasta
psawyer replied to RachelisFacebook's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Yes, I just checked on a package of Tiknyada brown rice macaroni. It says to add to boiling water for 1-2 minutes, then cover and stand for about 20 minutes. Tinkyada makes great pasta. We prefer the brown rice ones over the white rice. -
ARCHIVED Lunch Meat- Roast Beef?
psawyer replied to Kim27's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
General Mills and Unilever also explicitly label any gluten source. Con Agra, General Mills, Kraft and Unilever own many brands that you might not immediately associate with them. But somewhere on the package you should find the ultimate owner. A few brands they own that come to mind: VH, Lipton, Knorr, Bovril, Oscar Mayer, Green Giant, Cadbury, Nabisco... -
ARCHIVED Dean Jacob's Seasonings- Gluten Free?
psawyer replied to taffers's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Natural flavor is almost always gluten-free. Shelley Case, RD, in her book Gluten-Free Diet: A Comprehensive Resource Guide says, In both the US and Canada, wheat is a top allergen which must always be explicitly disclosed.
