Anyone Been Glutened By Earl Grey Tea?
psawyer replied to bridgetm's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This is a myth. The process used to seal tea bags involves heat and pressure and nothing else. -
ARCHIVED Positive Biopsy, Negative Blood Tests
psawyer replied to ToHelpMySon's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Welcome to the board. False negatives on the blood tests are common, especially in young children. False positives on the pathological examination of the small intestine biopsy are are extremely rare. I am not a doctor, but it is my interpretation that your son does indeed have celiac disease, and needs to go on a gluten-free diet now and forever. ... -

Anyone Been Glutened By Earl Grey Tea?
psawyer replied to bridgetm's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Tea, by itself, is gluten-free. If a flavor is added it is possible, although very unlikely, that there could be gluten in the flavor. -
ARCHIVED Hartz Flea Shampoo For Dogs
psawyer replied to starrytrekchic's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Flea products for veterinary use are only required to list the active ingredients. Shampoos for pets which do not claim to treat a condition (such as fleas) are not required to list ingredients. Oats, or wheat germ oil, are sometimes included for their value to the animal's overall skin and coat, but are unlikely to be found in a flea treatment. As... -
Without question, some people react to blue cheese. It does contain mold, which might be the issue. The Canadian Celiac Association explicitly lists blue cheese as safe in their pocket dictionary. Shelley Case, RD, in her book Gluten-Free Diet A Comprehensive Resource Guide, lists cheese as safe without qualification. In other words, "cheese" is safe...

This has been discussed many times here, and the consensus seems to be that such cheeses are safe for us to eat. It sounds like the Triumph cards are not consistent with current knowledge.

Lactose is the sugar found in milk. Casein is the protein in milk.

ARCHIVED Annatto
psawyer replied to rogue's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This thread is four years old, so some information may be out-of-date. Annatto, alcohol, and caramel color are all gluten-free. If you are reacting to annatto, it could be that you are sensitive to Achiote. There is no gluten in there to react to. -
ARCHIVED Caramel Apples
psawyer replied to JCastro's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
When there is a difference between the ingredients on the package, and those listed on a web site or in a gluten-free food list, always go with the package. Formulas change all the time, but the ingredients list on the actual package must match the contents. You might have an older package before they added wheat, or the web site may not yet have been... -

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Diabetic
psawyer replied to shadowedsensei's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
If she is still non-compliant with the diabetic diet, I would not hold out much hope of her keeping to the gluten-free diet. Unlike the diabetic diet, where an occasional indulgence can be overlooked, for the gluten-free diet to work, adherence must be complete. Sigh. You can lead a horse to water.. -
ARCHIVED 2 Questions About Type II Diabetes...
psawyer replied to SaraKat's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Type I diabetes is autoimmune. The immune system attacks the cells in the pancreas which produce insulin. The body stops producing insulin, with dramatic results. Treatment is a combination of insulin by injection (in all cases) and diet. There is a tendency to run in families, but specific genes have not been identified. Formerly called juvenile diabetes... -
ARCHIVED "my Dr. Said It's Ok To Have Wine"
psawyer replied to Cath R's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Whiskey and wine are safe, except for a few whiskeys that add a gluten-containing flavor after distillation. The stuff about barrels and corks is bunk. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Diabetic
psawyer replied to shadowedsensei's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
As Skylark mentioned, I am a type 1 who also has celiac disease. The two autoimmune conditions correlate, although we don't understand why. If you have either one, you are more likely to have the other. Type 1 diabetes is pretty easy to diagnose, and it has been suggested that all type 1 diabetics should be automatically screened for celiac. Both require... -
ARCHIVED Mrs. Dash Seasonings
psawyer replied to MrsJWells's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There is no regulated definition of "Gluten-Free" in the USA at the moment. It means whatever the company's legal department wants it to mean. Based on the information provided, I would consider it to be gluten-free and safe for us to use. The disclaimer is quite common, and is designed to protect the company against frivolous lawsuits. -
My response in your other topic may be helpful.

ARCHIVED Ads On Both Sides Of Message Box
psawyer replied to Monklady123's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
There is some truth to that. But the advertisers on this board are safe. Each one is a legitimate supplier of products or services catering to the gluten-free needs of the celiac community. -
ARCHIVED Brand New Member From Canada
psawyer replied to Wing's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I live in Markham (Unionville), but own a business in North Toronto (Yonge/Lawrence area). There are three gluten-free beers available in Ontario, although I have yet to find a restaurant/bar which stocks any of them. I usually drink wine when dining out. Two are made by a microbrewery in Quebec and the other by a brewery in Wisconsin. All three are... -
ARCHIVED Italian Restaurant, Framingham Ma--Help Me!
psawyer replied to brett31em's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Well, it makes some sense. But some gluten-free pasta is so good that most people cannot tell that it is gluten-free. Tinkyada brown rice pasta will "fool" many people into believing that it is "real" pasta. -
ARCHIVED 4 Year Old With Negative Blood Tests
psawyer replied to brigitam's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Response to the diet is a sufficient test for many, many people here. You don't need permission from a doctor to eat gluten-free.
