  1. My father was told he had irritable bowel more than forty years ago. TMI: when I still lived at home, I saw what he could do in the bathroom. I am not the only family member to have had explosive diarrhea. When I was diagosed, I suggested to him that he be tested, but he blew me off. He told me that when his colon was upset, wheat seemed to calm it....
  2. I have been at this for ten years. I have never found credible evidence for this claim of dusting lines with wheat flour. Wheat flour is sticky! You would not use it as an anti-stick agent. When these agents are used (which is not common), they are cellulose, typically a byproduct of the pulp and paper business--in other words, derived from trees. Lines...
  3. This may help you get started. It is an old post from a fellow moderator, but the information is stll absolutely true:
  4. Jacquie came in with me this morning for a half-shift at the store. Just four hours, but it is a start. It will probably be a week or more before she can return full time. She's still not able to drive or lift.
  5. That statement is a standard legal disclaimer. No mainstream company will guarantee gluten-free status of any product. They are covering their @$$ in case they get a contaminated ingredient from one of their suppliers.
  6. Sprouted grains still contain lots of gluten. They are not safe for us.
  7. No, it is gluten-free. It is the only gluten-free Lipton soup.
  8. taszoo, I am not familiar with the label laws in OZ. But in Canada and the US, maltodextrin is definitely safe--if wheat is the source it must be explicitly declared on the label.
  9. I would get her to urgent medical care. The renal issues and acidosis are nothing to fool around with (I'm a type 1 diabetic).
  10. She would have to have really good eyes. It is about 25 miles to Oakville as the crow flies, more like 30 if you drive.
  11. I don't know if a beef intolerance would extend to gelatin. Gelatin is made from connective tissue (collagen) found in cartilage and skin. It is not derived from the meat we mean when we commonly speak of "beef."
  12. The dishwasher would work for non-porous surfaces, but not for porous ones such as wood.
  13. Gelatin is made from animal tissue, not vegetables. If it is non-bovine in origin, it is most likely to be porcine. There are religious and cultural issues for some people, but it is gluten-free.
  14. The question was not whether wheat-free was gluten-free, but rather if it was possible to be gluten-free while still containing a wheat derived ingredient. It wasn't about rye or barley. But wheat does mean gluten, except in some very specific and uncommon situations.
  15. In some specific circumstances, wheat may be the starting point for something that is very highly processed so that no gluten remains in the final product. Gluten is the protein part of wheat. Wheat contains other substances as well. But as a general rule, wheat implies gluten.
  16. Here is Shelley Case's take on it, from Gluten-Free Diet A Comprehensive Resource Guide: [Emphasis in original]
  17. Caramel color is safe for celiacs. Period.
  18. Nor have I.
  19. Congratulations!
  20. False negatives on the blood work are common, but false postives are quite rare. The biopsy, if positive, would confirm damage to the villi. The chances are very high that you have celiac disease, even if a biopsy is done and fails to find damage. Those antibodies are in your system, attacking your body.
  21. I don't have a direct answer for you, but check out Kraft products. They will not hide gluten--it will be clearly disclosed in the ingredient list. Most of their dressings are gluten-free, and I seem to remember that they have BBQ sauce that is gluten-free.
  22. The image must be on a site that you can hot link to, such as PhotoBucket or Flickr. You can code the IMG tags yourself, or use the "insert image" button (second to the right of the "smiley" button). For example, [img=http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e339/tortoiseshell2002/Psillies/Martini1-1.webp] produces:
  23. Me too. Yes, there is a chance that there is some gluten stuck in a deposit on the grid. Repeated thorough scrubbing should get it. Even if some remains, it is a finite and ever-diminishing small amount. I didn't even know about this concern when I started the diet almost ten years ago. We didn't throw anything out, and I am here and healthy today.
