The Toronto Sun's award winning cartoonist, Andy Donato, had this for us in yesterday's Sunday Sun. Jess, any idea what genes mutated in that baby? -
ARCHIVED How Well Do You Feel Gluten Free?
psawyer replied to dhiltonlittle's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My symptoms are long gone, but it took a few months on the gluten-free diet to accomplish that. I feel fine now. -
ARCHIVED Knorr Liquid Seasoning
psawyer replied to Shannonlass's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Returning to the original question, then. Knorr is a Unilever brand. Unilever's policy is to clearly disclose any gluten source by naming the grain in the ingredients list. Other companies whose labels can be trusted include Kraft, Con Agra and General Mills. The product for which you listed the ingredients is gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED Blood Test Came Back Normal...so Is That It?
psawyer replied to lissm's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
How long had you been gluten-free prior to the test? The blood tests look for antibodies produced in reaction to gluten. I have heard various things, but the consensus here seems to be that you need to be eating the equivalent of two slices of "normal" bread a day for two to three months leading up to the test. -

Tis quiet here. My store is quiet this week because of March break. We're gonna make lasagna for dinner and then watch the long-awaited return of Flashforward. It's on for two hours starting at eight Eastern and Pacific; seven Central. I guess nobody in the Mountain time zone has a TV, cuz they never give a time for them. Maybe Julie knows something... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Transfer In Deep Fat Frying
psawyer replied to Oboysfun's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Everything I have ever seen or heard says that the deep fryer does not alter gluten (or any other protein, for that matter). Cross-contamination in the fryers is a big concern for all of us. The question mostly comes up in terms of french fries. -
ARCHIVED Hydrolyzed Soy Protein / Vh Teriyaki Sauce In Canada
psawyer replied to kaiess's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hydrolyzed plant/vegetable protein is safe, unless it comes from a gluten grain. Soy protein is gluten-free. When the source is unspecified, it is usually soy, but that is a situation to check on with some manufacturers. Vinegar is gluten-free, except for malt vinegar which is always labeled as just that, "malt vinegar." VH is a Con Agra brand. Con... -
ARCHIVED The Joys Of Dog Food Shopping
psawyer replied to WheatChef's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
We own and operate a specialty pet food and supply store. All of the foods Tiffany mentioned are grain-free and therefore gluten-free. FWIW, "Wheat free" does not mean gluten-free. It is not misleading to label a food wheat-free when it contains no wheat, but does contain barley. Barley is not wheat--it is gluten, yes, but wheat is not the only source... -

Well, the rain and warm weather melted all the snowbanks, revealing the, um, stuff, that had been hiding all winter. I hope the venue is better this time and he actually gets a chance to meet Rob. -

psawyer replied to TriticusToxicum's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Yawn. March break is a dead time for our business. If your name is Julius, today may not be a good day to visit the Senate. At least it isn't raining today. The parking lot needs cleaning up. The P/T help is due in at 4:00. Management is the art of getting other people to do all the work. -
Welcome to the board. The magnitude of your result is such that some doctors would diagnose celiac disease based on it alone. Others want to do the biopsy to confirm damage to the intestines before making a diagnosis. As I see it, you have celiac disease. If you are going ahead with the biopsy, you need to continue eating gluten until after the biopsy...

ARCHIVED Some People Are Cruel
psawyer replied to canutillomom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Family or not, I would walk away and not come back. This is a deliberate attempt to poison you, to see if it is really poison. How would she feel if you slipped "just a bit" of rat poison into her meal, to see if it was really poisonous. Geez, Louise, she doesn't get it and never will. Did I say walk? I should have said RUN. -
ARCHIVED Total Serum Iga?
psawyer replied to veggiemomma's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Total serum IgA must be tested in order for the other results to be valid. If it is not normal, then the other test results are cast into doubt. If the total serum IgA is below normal, then the other tests may yield a false negative, because your system is suppressed and is not producing antibodies to anything--gluten would be no exception. If the total serum... -
ARCHIVED Obscure Sources Of Gluten?
psawyer replied to David in Seattle's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
In the US and Canada, the single word "starch" in an ingredient list must, by law, be corn starch. Any other starch must be labeled with the name of the source. US: CPG Sec. 578.100. Canada: Food & Drug Regulation B.13.011 . -
ARCHIVED Please Help, Scared And Unsure
psawyer replied to Mandy Armfield Jennings's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, Mandy, and welcome to the board. The symptoms you describe are all consistent with celiac disease, but could have other origins. You are correct that a colonoscopy can neither diagnose nor rule out celiac disease. However, in cases such as this, a colonoscopy is wise to ensure that there is not some other condition causing, or contributing to, your... -
Knorr Bouillon
psawyer replied to mroper's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This is simply not true. While in theory, it could be wheat, in my experience it never is. In the US, it would be required by law to be labeled as "wheat." Knorr is a Unilever brand, and Unilever (like Kraft, Con Agra, General Mills and others) will always clearly label any gluten-containing ingredient by naming the grain source. -

ARCHIVED Is This Specific Rice Gluten-Free?
psawyer replied to phdezra's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I fixed the title for you. Rice is inherently gluten-free. There is only a concern if something with gluten is added to the rice. -
Molly, it's great to hear from you again on this board. Your presence is missed by me, and I am sure by many others.

From another discussion about the McD fries. This has got to be the most debated question ever on this board.
