Celiac.com - Celiac Disease & Gluten-Free Diet Support Since 1995

  1. There are a number of automatic substitutions that take place here. Some are to improve clarity and make entries easier to find using a search engine. Two common two-letter abbreviations are replaced by "celiac disease" and "gluten-free" respectively. A large number of product/site names have been implicated in spam problems in the past. Such names are...
  2. Not all Nutro products are gluten free. A number of their cans and pouches have wheat gluten in them. Read the ingredients, as the ingredient will be listed as "wheat gluten." Some Nutro products are gluten-free. Most wet foods with gravy or sauce use wheat gluten as a key ingredient in the sauce. That is why the recall in 2007 affected so many different...
  3. Hello, folks, just a quick visit. Amanda, that just sucks. That woman is a real piece of @#$@%* work!
  4. It has become rather quiet here, after a surge of activity. Our new Queen has set a new Standard, but are they Princess Elsie and Prince Gus? And where would that leave the ripper? Is he HRH Crown Prince Jack the Ripper? One theory about the original Jack the Ripper identifies him as Open Original Shared Link, grandson of Queen Victoria and eldest son...
  5. Yes, you can manage both type 1 diabetes and celiac disease at the same time. There are a number of members on this board who do just that. Rule number 1: If there is a conflict between the two diets, the gluten-free option must prevail every time. A bit of sugar or extra carbohydrate will clear you system within hours and will likely have no long-term...
  6. In this context, Dear Husband and Dear Daughter. DH can also mean Dermatitis Herpetiformis.
  7. Yay! I've been on this journey almost eight years now, and I tell people that I cannot have any gluten (I usually say "wheat or barley"--rye is seldom an issue), and while not everyone gets the full import of things like cross-contamination, I have never had a problem with the basic concept. I don't hide that I am a celiac, nor that I am a type 1 diabetic...
  8. I haven't been to the Disneyland Hotel or the park since my diagnosis, but I have heard many times from others on this board that both are very accommodating to people with dietary issues, including celiac disease. Prior to diagnosis, I visited the park several times and stayed at the hotel once while traveling on business. Enjoy your trip.
  9. Congratulations, Em! That was the lucky post!
  10. Yes, just a few more posts to go. Post number 14986 will begin page 1000, and usher in my successor. Less than ten to go.
  11. With a little help from another member, I have confirmed that a regular member can see their own warn level, but nobody else's. They can click on the percentage to open the pop-up window which gives details about their warnings if they have any. As always, the mods can see everybody's, and can issue (or rescind) warnings. Don't worry.
  12. Don't worry. Open Original Shared Link
  13. Scott did make some software changes yesterday. It sounds like ordinary members can now see their own warn level. If it shows 0% then no warnings have been issued. As a moderator, I can see everybody's level, and can issue a warning if the member violates the board rules. This is never done without communicating the reason to the member. After three warnings...
  14. Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP) and Hydrolyzed Plant Protein (HPP) can be gluten, but seldom are. If it is wheat, that must be clearly disclosed in the United States, but not in Canada. If the company has a policy to clearly disclose gluten sources, as many do, then you don't need to worry. Otherwise contact the manufacturer and ask. As Ursa and elonwy...
  15. Amanda, when Jacquie and I were in Orlando, we went to the space center. This was in 1996. There were two tours available, one of the civilian NASA-operated Kennedy Space Center, and one of the more historic Cape Canaveral Air Force Station where the earlier missions were launched. We did both. I would do it again. It was a much more enjoyable day than the...
  16. I am not aware of any circumstances in which diabetes of either type would cause abdominal pain. The closest thing that I can thing of is the intense bladder pressure associated with the urgent need to urinate. But there is no doubting what that is. You KNOW. If you are having abdominal pain, I would look for another reason. Celiac disease could very well...
  17. And soon it will be summer. Just 17 days, 22 hours and 41 minutes to go as I type this.
  18. Although it usually presents in childhood, which is why it was once called juvenile diabetes, type 1 diabetes can occur at any age. I was over 30 when diagnosed. I had the typical type 1 symptoms: weight loss, excessive thirst, frequent urination, and fatigue. I called my doctor and said, "I think I have diabetes. You need to test my blood sugar." It was...
  19. The post above, four weeks ago on a Monday afternoon, began page 900, and thus my tenure as your leader. We are now on page 997, and my time is nearing. I am once again posting from out on the deck, with two pheline phriends and Jacquie with me. It just seems appropriate.
  20. How ironic that this gets posted, and less than an hour later someone starts spamming the board about pills to enlarge ones manly appendage. Not that any of us here need anything like that.
  21. My comments about ingredients were specific to the Lea & Perrins brand, which does not have soy sauce as an ingredient. With that brand, it is the malt vinegar that is the issue with the Canadian version. I keep looking in stores, but all I ever seem to see is Lea & Perrins. I've never seen Heinz or French's. Soy sauce is a possible source of gluten...
  22. Scott claims a longer time, but my empirical investigations indicate that you have as a minimum two hours to make corrections. Welcome back, Alex, and I am waiting to see what you almost posted before chickening out.
  23. Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce varies from country to country with respect to the vinegar: "Some ingredients are sourced locally." Here in Canada, the first ingredient listed is "Malt Vinegar (from barley)." In the United States, it is my understanding that the vinegar used is distilled, which would make it safe regardless of source (but it is not...
