ARCHIVED Shrimp Cocktail Sauce & Worschester Sauce
psawyer replied to Cynbd's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Worcestershire sauce may contain malt. It depends on the brand, and with some brands, the formula varies by country. In the United States, Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce is gluten-free. In Canada, Lea & Perrins contains malt vinegar and thus, gluten. -

Gee, it is quiet here today. Regarding the Toronto transit strike, the Legislature met in emergency session at 1:30 today and unanimously passed the back-to-work bill, and at 2:45 it was signed into law by the Lt-Governor. Service began resuming a little after five, and most service is running now. The Monday morning commute will be as normal as it ever... -
ARCHIVED How To Search For Members From A Specific Area
psawyer replied to cardine45's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
I don't know of any way to search using the member's location from their profile. If you are looking a a post, you can easily send a private message. Move your cursor over the member's name at the top left of the post. A dark triangle will appear to the right of the member's name--click the triangle. A small menu will appear, with the third item being... -
Many people with celiac disease develop other food intolerances. Lactose intolerance is usually temporary, as kehaulani noted. You may have developed an intolerance to casein, which is the protein in milk. This is the most common intolerance in celiacs after gluten. If you are casein intolerant, you must avoid all dairy products, even those which have...

I feel your pain. Clearly your husband does not get it. Unfortunately, I don't have any practical suggestions that I can think of at the moment that might help him see the light. And you are right that you will not be able to tell if a gluten-free diet works for you unless you can follow it strictly. Perhaps you could eat only foods that are naturally...

The ferries are run by the parks department, not the TTC. So no worries there. But the mayor, who never met a union he didn't sell out to like, actually asked the provincial government to pass back-to-work legislation. The Ontario Legislature will meet in emergency session Sunday at 1:30 to consider a bill to that effect. So, it may be over in time for... -

Our experience with our local squirrels seems to say a distance of about 3 metres is adequate in most cases. A bit more may be needed if they are leaping from high above. American squirrels would need about ten feet. -

Morning, all! We woke up this morning to a surprise transit strike. After getting a tentative deal that was widely criticized as being too, too sweet for the union, they voted yesterday to reject it by 65%. And then walked out at midnight with less than an hour's notice. So, unless something unexpected happens quickly, Monday will be hell on wheels... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Traces In Food.
psawyer replied to Krystens mummy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
"May contain traces of xxx" is a voluntary disclosure statement. It may be nothing more than covering their @$$ against possible lawsuits. It may mean that xxx is used somewhere in the same premises, or even on the same lines, in making other products. There is no agreed legal definition of what "traces" are. As I said, this statement is voluntary... -
ARCHIVED Hidden Sources Of Gluten (or Wheat)?
psawyer replied to Jujbe's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi, I got the PM, but since the topic is of general interest to all Canadians, I am going to reply here. The list that Laura posted is still useful to us. Those companies that are listed as having a clear gluten disclosure policy, and that also operate in Canada, have the same policy here. This does not mean that the list of their products that are... -

Okay, here is the rest of the tale of the telecommunications mess in my life. I went into the store Tuesday morning and temporarily rerouted the voice line to the data equipment so the orders for today's delivery could be polled. The data line was still dead. The last piece of the work was supposed to happen in the morning. Late in the afternoon, just... -

Zen Judaism! To the phone story. Problems continued today. I went in for 9 am and stayed all 10 hours until closing at 7. This was my "day off" you understand. And I'll have to go in again tomorrow morning, at least for a short while, also on my "day off." When you own the business, there is no such thing as a real "day off." The technician... -

ARCHIVED Sick Of Being Sick
psawyer replied to peaceloveandinsulin's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Rachel, welcome to the board. While I don't have anything specific to share with you regarding your symptoms, you are not alone. There are a number of members here who have both celiac disease and type I diabetes. I am one of them, but there are numerous others. A couple who come to mind are elye and ~alex~. Look them up in the members page. The three... -
I agree with what Lisa said. If it does not have a porous surface, then a thorough cleaning will do the trick. I have never encountered a crock pot which does not have a hard, non-porous surface.

Hello, all my fellow sillies. It has been an interesting weekend here. The threatened transit strike is off for now, but the word came almost two hours after the 4 o'clock deadline this afternoon. Tomorrow will be somewhat chaotic anyway, as many have made alternate plans to car pool and calling these off on short notice may not happen. The "emergency... -

While I don't know that particular brand, I have never, ever encountered a rum that was grain based. I just don't worry about rum, period. -

The number measures glucose in mmol/L, a metric measure. "Normal" levels are between 4.0 and 7.0, and expectations vary with circumstances. 2.1 is very low, and many people would pass out long before they got that low. I become concerned if I go below 4.0, but that is based on my experience with hypoglycemia in my pre-diagnosis days. My current family doctor... -
ARCHIVED Maltodextrin
psawyer replied to Colleen.C's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Colleen, I see from another post that you are in New Zealand. I don't know what the laws are there. The relevant US code says: Note: FDA also permits the use of other starches including wheat. For example, if wheat is used it must be labeled "wheat maltodextrin". I have never heard of rye or barley being used to make maltodextrin. Here in North America... -
ARCHIVED Is It Really Gluten Free?
psawyer replied to LuvMoosic4life's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
As previously stated by j_mommy, any statement about shared facilities or shared equipment is totally voluntary. If you see it, it is probably true. If you don't see it, it may still be true. Unless your home is completely free of all products containing gluten, it is a "shared facility" and your dishes and cutlery are likely "shared equipment." You... -

Gee, if you scroll down far enough, they have Altoids. OMG. Recent arrivals here may not know the story, but if you search the board for that word, you will find some, er, interesting discussions. Sarah, I feel your pain. We're all pulling for you, so bring your worries here to us. We care. Gotta run, back later. -
ARCHIVED Modified Tapioca Starch?
psawyer replied to stolly's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Regardless of which type of modification is used, nothing of organic* origin is added during the modification. The only way modified starch can have gluten is if it is from a gluten grain in the first place, such as modified wheat starch. *I use the word "organic" here in its original chemical meaning, not the now-popular agricultural use. In this sense... -
ARCHIVED La Choy Soy Sauce
psawyer replied to Wakeboarder's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
For any Canadians reading this, in Canada VH Soy Sauce is widely available in grocery stores and is gluten-free. I use it frequently and it tastes as good as any wheat-based version that I can recall (it has been almost eight years). The bad news is that is is only available in Canada. Pity. There are many other gluten-free sauces sold by VH in Canada...
