ARCHIVED Natural Flavorings
psawyer replied to Sugar's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There a number of mainstream companies and/or brands that have a policy of clearly disclosing gluten by always naming the grain in plain language. With these manufacturers, if you don't see wheat, barley, rye or oats by name on the label, then you do not need to worry even if you see a dubious item like natural flavor or modified food starch. My current... -
ARCHIVED Unfit For Military Service....

I beg to differ, at least in part. You are correct that stress, as generally thought of (emotional stress), is not usually the trigger for celiac onset, but it CAN be. In most cases, the stress we speak of is not emotional stress, but stress placed on the immune system by an infection, or an infectious disease such as mononucleosis or influenza. The immune... -
ARCHIVED Aghhhhhh! Gas Prices
psawyer replied to blueeyedmanda's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Yes, but the tax on gas in Canada is much higher. Each province has a per-litre rate, and there is a federal per-litre rate, and then the GST is added to the price with the first two taxes included, so we pay sales tax on the excise taxes. In Ontario, the provincial tax is 14.7 cents per litre, added to the federal tax of 10 cents. If we pay 1.05 for... -
ARCHIVED Casein-free?
psawyer replied to Ladycates's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
While it is common for celiac to coexist with casein intolerance, they are separate conditions. Casein is the protein found in milk. The ability to digest lactose (milk sugar) is affected by celiac. The enzyme lactase, which is required to break down lactose is produced by the villi. If the villi are damaged, lactase is not produced, causing lactose intolerance... -

ARCHIVED Aghhhhhh! Gas Prices
psawyer replied to blueeyedmanda's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Alex, it can be confusing indeed. The Imperial gallon is 160 ounces, while the smaller volume that the misguided folks in the Excited States mistake for a "gallon" is only 128 ounces. They further confuse things by calling 32 ounces a "quart" (should be 40), and 16 ounces a "pint" (should be 20). Converting 1.09/l to US I get about 3.99/US gal... -

ARCHIVED Help, I Was Diagnosed With celiac disease
psawyer replied to Janelle's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There is some conflicting information about the disease out there. Each day the knowledge gets better. It is now generally accepted that most persons with celiac disease can safely consume distilled vinegar and alcohol. A minority of us have adverse reactions to these when the original source is a gluten grain. Many celiacs have other intolerances beyond... -

Out of control? Me? What silliness is this... Hmm, perhaps this is a measurement of how silly I am. If I am, in fact, the silliest of us all, what does that mean? I hope that it does not mean that I have to wear phunny earrings with strange depictions of certain body parts. That would be very hard for me to do. -
ARCHIVED Glutened At The Gyno?
psawyer replied to sansglutengrl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hello again, The large amount of water could cause the big D, especially if your digestive tract is still compromised. Water is absorbed in the intestines, and if it isn't absorbed then very loose stool will result. Sugar alcohols (things whose names end in -bitol) can also cause loose stool. I haven't had this specific examination, but the stress associated... -

Gawd, I can not imagine this. For the ladies only, I suppose. Is it to be eaten al dente, or is it better when it is still quite hard? -

Actually, this thread gets a lot of moderator attention. But, those mods are active participants in the silliness. Seriously, explicit topics have been graphically discussed in many other threads. The rules allow for it. -

So, Emily, do these famous earrings look like Open Original Shared Link? Or, are we talking more something like Open Original Shared Link? Oh, wait, it is usually dark in a bar--it must be Open Original Shared Link! -

Ah, but every single post you have ever made, all of them, are showing this avatar. Updates to your custom title, avatar and signature are retroactive. The board only keeps the current copy, and anyone looking at any post you have ever made sees the current one. So, I guess it is a good thing that you are showing your good side to the camera. ... -

WooHoo!! Weather in Markham currently is -1oC, and mostly sunny, but we're expecting another visit from Mr. Winter this evening, with 1-3 cm accumulating. Spring arrives in Toronto in eight days, thirteen hours and fifteen minutes, not that I'm counting down or anything like that. -

I see you reading, Sarah. A pretty quiet day at the store, which definitely did not need both of us, except for about five minutes to deal with the technical issue regarding our Visa provider. They sent a techie to the store to do what I could have done myself Friday if they had had a clue about what needed to be done at their help[less] desk.... -
ARCHIVED Testing Tomorrow - Questions?
psawyer replied to KayCe234's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, pasta and bread are too very significant sources of gluten in the diet. But flour shows up as a thickener in sauces and the like. Cakes and cookies, and just about all "normal" baked goods are loaded with gluten. Barley hides in prepared cereal (and of course many cereals are made all or partly from wheat). Even without bread and pasta you are likely... -

At least you didn't get the foot of snow. Enjoy the gift from "the colonies." Work will never be the same again. I think it was a week's expedition on Em's part. So here I am at the store, and it is pretty dead. It's March Break, and many of the people in this neighboUrhood go away for the week. Brilliant sunshine, but chilly at... -
ARCHIVED Testing Tomorrow - Questions?
psawyer replied to KayCe234's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree that tonight's dinner will make no difference to tomorrow's tests. For testing to be accurate, you need to eat gluten on a regular basis over a prolonged period. It sounds like you were doing fine at Bugaboo Creek until it came to the bread. -
ARCHIVED Feeling Waaaayyyyy Guilty!?
psawyer replied to sharps45's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
As Richard said, you are not to blame for this. Your adherence to the gluten-free diet, or non-adherence, had nothing to do with the genes your daughter received. Neither did it have anything to do with her having the disease triggered. The good news is that you all know, and this is something that you can handle. It will take effort. I know it did for... -

Well, here I am again. Tomorrow is Monday, and I don't usually go into the store on Mondays. I catch up on administrative stuff and bookkeeping. But I did that today, while not shoveling, and will be in the store tomorrow. We've got some technical stuff to work out with our Visa provider that will likely require my presence on site. The morning commute... -
ARCHIVED Family History, Testing And Broaching The Subject
psawyer replied to Lisa16's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The number of genes you yourself have makes no difference to your chances of having the disease triggered, as I understand it. It does, however, affect the chances of your children eventually developing celiac disease. Celiac disease requires three things: At least one of the genes (two are definitely known, there may be others); Gluten in the diet... -
