  1. okgrace, Sometimes we mess up and miss things. Your topic from the 28th is one of them. I have now pinned it in the parents area, since I am assuming that your intent relates to the foods as pertaining to children's digestion. The other one, today's about eating at a friend's house, has been pinned in the Coping With section, since it is applicable...
  2. And, this has had an astonishing side effect! Scott deleted two posts from page 2 of this thread. This has caused the very foundation of Sillyville to warp. That which they always worried about on Star Trek has happened to Sillyville. The first post on page 800 is now a post by, wait for it, jerseyangel. The top two posts on every page from 3 onwards...
  3. If you start a reply (or even if you just open the reply without typing anything) you can escape without posting by using the "back" navigation function of your browser. In Firefox and IE, this is a left-pointing arrow in the top-left corner of the screen.
  4. Check your PMs for a report from me. She's bad news.
  5. The term "gluten" can have two meanings. It can refer to vegetable proteins, especially those from grains, in general. This sense is found when you see reference to corn gluten, or rice gluten. It is used in dietary discussions relating to celiac disease to mean four specific grain proteins. Those are the ones found in wheat, barley, rye and oats. ...
  6. The safety of alcoholic beverages has been the subject of considerable discussion here. Malt beverages, including most beers and many coolers, contain barley malt and are not suitable for our diet. Wine is not made from grain--most are made from grapes. There is no gluten in any fruit, including grapes, so wine is safe, at least from a gluten perspective...
  7. Yeah, I know that NATURAL flavor can hide barley (usually as malt), but I have never found a problem with ARTIFICIAL flavors. There are some companies that will clearly declare gluten sources, and with them you don't need to worry about ambiguous ingredients. I don't know who is behind Members Mark. I use Coffee Mate all the time. Malt is something we need...
  8. All of those ingredients are gluten-free, with the possible exception of the artificial flavor. I have never found an artificial flavor that contained gluten, the key being "artificial," but it is not completely impossible. Personally, I would use it, but you need to make your own decision. If you are concerned about dairy, there is milk protein in it...
  9. Connect the two words you want to find together with an ampersand (&), not the word "and." To find topics with apples and oranges, use the search argument "apples & oranges" - you can connect more than two words this way. To find topics that mention apples and oranges and the phrase fruit juice, use: apples & oranges & "fruit juice...
  10. I am in Ontario, Canada. The only gluten-free beer available here is La Messagere. You can get it at the government monopoly liquor store for an excruciating cost of $17.75 for a 6-pack. It is brewed in Quebec, and is available in stores there. It will never replace Guiness, but I find it to be satisfying. I went six years without beer before trying it, so...
  11. Hi, Jerry, good to see you. A year goes by so quickly. I remember you as the guy who takes awesome photos. I'm glad you're still doing well.
  12. "LOL" is short for "Laughing Out Loud."
  13. Yes, it is genetic, but there is more to it than that. Not everyone who is born with the genes develops the disease. Having the celiac gene means that the disease could appear at some point in your life, but the majority of people with the gene never do develop the actual disease. Studies indicate that a trigger is required to activate the genes. Typically...
  14. Sarah, Happy Anniversary! Good morning, all. Rain and warm temperatures again today. Serious melting is taking place.
  15. Well, I've been to Las Vegas twice, and it was pretty far out. My last visit was in 1993, and I understand it has just gotten further and further away from reality. The hotels just keep getting bigger and bigger. In 1993 we stayed at Harrah's and thought it was big, but at least three new properties more than twice the size were under construction. I've been...
  16. Laura is correct. In the US, it is gluten-free, but in Canada it contains malt vinegar and therefore gluten. The web site is confusing, as it suggests that there is "only one genuine and original" sauce, but there are differences in the vinegar used in different countries. In Canada it is made under license by E. D. Smith.
  17. Gee, it's been pretty quiet in Sillyville today. Sorry to hear you aren't feeling well, Manda, hope you are better soon. I hope Sarah is doing well, I haven't heard anything. She was last on the boards about 11 hours ago. Parental birthdays, is it. None in April here. February and August, and for both of them, 80 has come and gone. But we can...
  18. A diagnosis of celiac disease, based on positive blood tests or a positive biopsy showing damage to the villi, is specific and can not result from bulimia. It can only result from celiac disease. Since celiac disease has so many varied possible symptoms, there could be some confusion, but proper testing for celiac disease will not give a false positive...
  19. I have no idea where KelBelle got that misinformation, but there is no gluten in any mushroom, at least not as we use the term. Prepared foods containing mushrooms could have gluten in them from another ingredient, but the mushrooms themselves are gluten-free. Period.
  20. Listen to happygirl. She speaks the truth. Gluten does harm to you if you have celiac disease, even if you do not have visible symptoms. Be grateful that you know about it; you can extend your life expectancy and avoid serious related diseases by adopting a completely gluten-free diet immediately.
  21. You can do this, Sarah. You want to do this, and you will succeed. I know you will.
  22. This is definitely a cause for concern. Gluten can get onto the grill and contaminate food later placed on the same grill. If you can, take aluminum foil with you, and put the foil between the grill and your food. This will keep any gluten on the cooking surface from contaminating your food. The restaurant may also be able to provide foil, but I would not...
  23. Hi, Sarah. I'm glad the fire conflagration is no longer a threat. You are on a positive roll.
  24. When reading labels, there are safe ingredients. Those are ones that you know do not contain gluten, such as, say, corn starch. There are unsafe ingredients, which always have gluten, such as flour or malt. Then there are a lot which can contain gluten, but don't always. With these, you need to know the company's labeling policy. If they have a policy...
  25. Most ketchups are okay, but always read the label. Heinz ketchups are all gluten-free except for the organic one. Most soy sauces, but not all, have wheat as the first ingredient. In Canada, VH is gluten-free, but it is not available in the US. San-J is gluten-free.
