ARCHIVED Soy Sauce?!
psawyer replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
VH is great, and it is available everywhere in Canada. It is not available in the US, even though VH's parent company, ConAgra, is American. -
ARCHIVED Anyone Have A Double-decker?
psawyer replied to skbird's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Stephanie, The pancreas responds to glcuose in the blood, regardless of how it got there. 225 is high, but stress can temporarily cause a spike in blood glucose levels. The "double decker" exam would produce some stress, possibly enough, when combined with the IV glucose, to produce such a high level. Ask the doctor to test, (or, if you can, test yourself... -
ARCHIVED Peppermint Extract
psawyer replied to Kasey'sMom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If the alcohol was distilled, then it is gluten free regardless of the original source. Gluten does not pass into the distillate--the molecule is far too large. -
ARCHIVED Anyone Have A Double-decker?
psawyer replied to skbird's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Gatorade is gluten-free. Loaded with sugar, but I guess that is the point -
Carolyn, good point! I had not thought of that.

I do, and have done so since I started on insulin for diabetes almost twenty years ago. When I was diagnosed with celiac in 2000, I had that added to the engraved message, which now says: NO GLUTEN CELIAC DISEASE INSULIN DEPENDENT DIABETES MELLITUS I'm not sure it is a really big concern, as gluten must be ingested by mouth to be a problem...

ARCHIVED Paper Coffeefilters Glutenfree?
psawyer replied to healthman's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
As far as I know, there is no glue in any coffee filter, and there is nothing to be concerned about. I have been told that coffee is safe, and accept it on that basis. I drink coffee daily and have not had any problems. Paper filters are used at home and at both places where I frequently drink the break room coffee. None of the usual additives (sugar, artificial... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Have A Double-decker?
psawyer replied to skbird's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had both at the same time because the doctor wanted to be sure everything was covered. That was just over five years ago (June 2000). The colonoscopy found nothing. The endoscopy (and biopsy) found severe villi damage: Celiac Disease--which is what we suspected. I was sedated, and remember nothing of the actual procedure, which was done first thing in... -
Welcome aboard! We all were new to this at one time or another. There is a huge amount of valuable information already in the posts on here, which you can search for. There are also many of us with experiences and knowledge to help you out. Going gluten free is a big adjustment that affects everyone in the house, but it makes a huge difference in how...

Sugar levels in diabetics who are taking oral medication or who inject insulin are subject to flip flops Especially for those of use taking insulin (which covers all type 1 and a significant number of type 2 diabetics), there is an equation with four variables to consider: 1. What is my current sugar level? 2. What am I eating (in terms of carbohydrate...

Brenda, with those levels, you don't sound like you have diabetes. 82 fasting is well within the normal range. 69 is a bit low for two hours after eating, buit not alarming. None of your readings are high enough to indicate diabetes to me. But, I am not a doctor, just somebody with two decades of experience with my own type 1 diabetes.
-
If I understand the US scale, 106 is a good reading. How soon after eating did you test? The timings we worry about are just before eating and two hours after eating. It takes at least half an hour to see the effect of most foods. Type 1 diabetes (which I have) is an autoimmune disease like celiac disease. A reaction is triggered in the immune system which...

Brenda, the glucose tolerance test is just one way to diagnose diabetes. The oral glucose is gluten free, but loaded with glucose. Another accepted method of determining diabetes is to measure fasting blood sugar (i.e. first thing in the morning before any food or beverage) being above a threshold level more than once. I am in Canada where we use metric...

Excessive thirst is also a major symptom of diabetes. Combined with sweet smelling urine, it is very likely that, like me, you have diabetes. Type 1 diabetes and celiac disease are both genetically influenced autoimmune diseases which often occur together. Please, get yourself tested, Brenda. It is a simple test to see if there is glucose in your urine, or...

ARCHIVED Will Damage Already Done Heal
psawyer replied to matt4444's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
You don't have to give up on cheeseburgers or pizza. Okay, you can't just walk into McDonalds or Domino's and eat what they have, but there are gluten-free pizza crusts and hamburger rolls available (or you can make your own). I'm in the Toronto area, and get gluten-free hamburger buns online from glutino.com and get gluten-free pizza crusts from Sterk... -
ARCHIVED I Know I Am Being Waaaaay Oversensitive Here
psawyer replied to skoki-mom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am a diabetic, and I am a celiac. So, there! But, really, I don't have a problem with this "label" when it is used positively. If someone I know tells someone else, "Peter is a celiac, so he can't eat anything with wheat in it," I consider this a good thing. I describe myself as a celiac when the occasion is appropriate. Last summer, I was at a conference... -
ARCHIVED Lawrys Seasoning
psawyer replied to BamBam's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If only every company had this policy. Okay, I must be dreaming, but, well... It is ironic that pet food is regulated by AAFCO and they do not allow any weasel words in ingredient lists. If there is gluten in your dog's food, it must be clearly disclosed, but if the food is for HUMAN consumption, well, hide, weasel, squirm, evade, equivocate, ... -

ARCHIVED Strong-armed By Boss To Go To Lunch
psawyer replied to Wandering Hermit's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
La Messagere beer from Les bieres de Nouvelle-France Inc in Saint-Poulin, Quebec is gluten free, and good (although a bit expensive). I live in Ontario, and it is carried at selected LCBO outlets, including the one in Richmond Hill on Yonge Street north of Highway 7. It is made from rice, buckwheat, hops and spring water, and says "gluten free" right on the... -
ARCHIVED Seaggrams Gin
psawyer replied to AnnieMarie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I am not aware of any gin that contains gluten. My personal preference is Beefeater and I know that it is safe. -

Hi, I'm in Markham when I'm at home (right now I'm in Boston). -
I agree. You need to get a different doctor.

ARCHIVED Old El Paso Taco Seasoning Mix
psawyer replied to misskris's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
We use the regular (not low sodium) version regularly. I read the ingredients and it does not have MSG, which many people react to, nor does it have ethoxyquin, which is a chemical preservative. I'm in Canada, so the formula might be different here. Old El Paso is on my list of "trusted" brands who will not hide gluten, so if you do not see Wheat, Rye... -
