As I said on another thread, I think the statement on their web site is just a CYA statement. Whiskey is made from grains which contain gluten, but it is generally accepted by experts that the distillate is gluten free. Having said that, thare are a few people who have reported problems with distilled spirits, or distilled vinegar. But most thinking is that...

ARCHIVED Safe? Does Anyone Know?
psawyer replied to pattic's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yes, the whiskey is made from fermented grain, which is then distilled. It is generally accepted that the distillation process eliminates any gluten from the final product. The gluten molecule is too large to pass into the distillate and remains in the undistilled mash. That is just a CYA statement, IMO. -

ARCHIVED Dog Food
psawyer replied to tammy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I checked into Science Diet dog food today. I don't carry the large breed formulas, so I can't comment on them. The regular senior dry formula is gluten free. The Advanced Protection formulas, including the senior, contain oats. The regular adult formula contains wheat. The light formula is gluten free, but contains peanuts (the only dry food I know of... -

I posted a list (not necessarily complete) of gluten free dog food a while back. Here's the link: Open Original Shared Link I will look into Science Diet and post an update in 24 hours. -
ARCHIVED Quinoa
psawyer replied to Rachel--24's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Rachel, I'm cool with what you said. I just didn't want anybody to think there was anything about whole quinoa what was not natural or organic. Your body may have a problem with quinoa even if the saponin is completely removed. Peace. -
ARCHIVED Quinoa
psawyer replied to Rachel--24's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Everbody needs to keep this in perspective. Saponin is a natural part of the plant, just like the shell is a natural part of a walnut, or the stone is a natural part of an apricot. It is not a soap or chemical added by man. BTW, apricot stones are poisonous due to large quantities of naturally occuring cyanide, but that doesn't mean you should not eat the... -

psawyer replied to Rachel--24's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You do have to make sure it is thoroughly rinsed to remove any saponin (the soaplike coating) before preparing it. This may have been done before you get it, but I always put it in a strainer and run plenty of cold water through it to ensure that it is clean. When the water runs clear the saponin has been eliminated. -

I eat it from time to time. It is a nice change of pace from all the rice and potatoes. I don't think it is gross at all. And it is gluten free and natural. However, I suppose you could be one of the people who react to it. -
I sent you a long email on this topic. I saw in another post you made that you are in Ottawa. I am originally from Ottawa, but have lived in the Toronto area since 1960.

I have been insulin dependent since March 1986--almost twenty years. I was diagnosed with celiac disease in 2000, but I believe that I had it long before that. I had symptoms that could be caused by celiac disease as far back as 1969. Rule #1: When the celiac and diabetic diets conflict, the celiac diet MUST RULE. Extra sugar will be a temporary problem...

No orange box simply means that there are no posts in that topic that are unread. In other words, you have seen every post in that topic already.

ARCHIVED White Bread From Glutino
psawyer replied to sillyyak's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I haven't used that particular Glutino product, but we use a lot of their baked goods. We generally take them out of the freezer and let them thaw slowly at room temperature open to the air. We brush off any ice crystals on the food at the start of the process. Alternatively you can move a loaf of bread from the freezer to the fridge. It will thaw out in... -
ARCHIVED Wine
psawyer replied to nothungry's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have never encountered a wine from any country that has gluten. Wine is made from fruit (usually grapes), not grain. There is no reason to add grain, either before or after fermentation. I don't worry about it, I just enjoy it. -
ARCHIVED Who Knows About Buckwheat?
psawyer replied to Rachel--24's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Here is a link to a good description of buckwheat: Open Original Shared Link It is in the same family as rhubarb. Buckwheat flour is not always 100% pure buckwheat, and may contain wheat. You have to check. -
ARCHIVED My Husband Doesn't "get It" How Do I Help Him Understand?
psawyer replied to chrissy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Most cat litter does not contain gluten. As previously posted, Swheat Scoop does--it is made of wheat. There is a relatively new clumping litter made from barley, which, of course, is loaded with gluten. A similar litter is available which is gluten-free and made from corn. It is called The World's Best Cat Litter. Typical litters are ground clay, with... -

ARCHIVED How Did You Acquire Celiac?
psawyer replied to tasha's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The genetic factors are, obviously, present at birth. But it seems that something more is needed as a trigger to activate the latent disease. Typically this is something that puts a high level of stress on the body in general and the immune system in particular. An infection, an infectious disease (such as flu), pregnancy/childbirth may be the trigger. Mononucleosis... -

Type 1 diabetes is correct. Type 1 is an autoimmune disease wherein antibodies are produced which attack the Islets of Langerhans in the pancreas leaving the body unable to produce insulin. The proportion of celiacs among type 1 diabetics is higher that the population as a whole, and the reverse is also true. Recent research is now suggesting that untreated... -
I was told by a former BK store manager, who is also my wife, that the fries are not safe because they have a coating that contains gluten. But that was more that five years ago so it may have changed. Nevertheless I stay away from BK. McD fries are pure potato and are prepared in a dedicated fry station which processes only fries and hash browns (which...

ARCHIVED Kraft Salad Dressings
psawyer replied to AN616's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Kraft will clealy disclose gluten sources in simple language. If there is gluten, you will see one of the following words: Wheat, Barley, Rye, or Oats. Spelt and Triticale will be described as wheat, of which they are a form. There are many other manufacturers with this policy. Several lists have been posted here, so I won't clutter the board with another... -

I'm one of the people that David interviewed while he was working on his article. That was in early October. He has done a great job in telling our story, and it is just fantastic that it was a page-one story. Thank you so much, David. It is a terrific article. -
I'm confused. I went to the L&P web site, and it says that their sauce is made in two plants, one in the US and one in the UK. But I have a bottle here, purchased in Canada a long time ago (we hardly ever use it), and it says "Made and distributed by E.D.Smith and Sons Limited, Winona, Ontario, Canada for Lea & Perrins Ltd, Worcester, England....
