Celiac.com - Celiac Disease & Gluten-Free Diet Support Since 1995

Everything posted by psawyer

  1. Welcome. We are here to offer support. After being diagnosed, it took several months of being gluten free before things became "normal". Recovery time depends on how old you are and how much damage has been done. I was 46, and had been sick for years, with progressively more severe symptoms for five years prior to diagnosis. I began to see improvement...
  2. Thanks, Rachel. I do react to gluten in small amounts. I have gas and explosive diarreah. I have never had a reaction after eating McDonalds hash browns or fries. That does not prove that they are gluten-free. Scientifically you can not prove a negative. But, to me, it does mean that my body does not react, so if there is any gluten it is it an extremely...
  3. I don't live in a gluten-free facility, and I know that many others here are in the same situation. My wife is not a celiac, and she has some foods in the house that are off limits for me. We don't have two kitchens. We don't have two sets of dishes. We don't have two sets of flatware. We don't have two dishwashers. We DO wash thoroughly and regularly...
  4. Vincent, I think you must mean my post in the Hershey Bar thread: Open Original Shared Link You do have to read some of posts preceding it to get the context clearly.
  5. All good points, Richard. At this point the only thing we know for sure is that there is a h*** of a lot that we don't know for sure. Risks are everywhere. Every plant product you acquire should have the warning, "Grown on a planet where wheat is grown." I do remain concerned and interested in this issue. And I wonder what did McD know and when did they...
  6. I have been on the gluten-free diet for over five years. My wife mostly eats the same gluten-free stuff that I do. She has some things she eats that I can't, including some breakfast cereals, crackers, and fast food. It doesn't bother me at all to see her eating them. I'm over it (okay, when she eats Triscuits in my presence I have fond memories). But really...
  7. Here are some links to threads where I have posted on the topic of pet food. These link directly to my post, but you should probably read the whole thread. Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link I handle pet foods all the time, and many of them are not gluten-free. I always wash carefully after touching them...
  8. David's address is david.hamilton@wsj.com
  9. Susan, you have nothing to be sorry for. I hate it when people shoot the messenger. You saw something, and I am pleased that you brought it to our notice. I don't like the information, but we needed to know, and you did us all a great service by telling us. Thanks again.
  10. This is indeed sad news. McD was a place where I felt safe ordering the hash browns (cooked in the same oil as the fries), and even the fries once in a while. It was the only place I could grab a quick breakfast on the run when travelling. My guess is that this is a change to the product, since I have not had any problems with them in the past. The ingredient...
  11. Glutino produce a lot of very good products, all gluten-free. The sesame bagels are great. Glutino are located in surburban Montreal, and will ship internet orders to (at least) anywhere in Canada or the USA. Go to Open Original Shared Link I have had trouble with Firefox and this site getting along, so I use IE to order from them (one of only two sites...

    ARCHIVED Communion

This topic has had a lot of coverage here. Search on communion and you will find numerous threads. It is controversial, and I'm not expressing an opinon. Plenty of people already have!
  13. Yeah, there a bunch of us. I'm not far from Toronto. Welcome!
  14. Despite the title, which suggests that discussion is welcome, this thread is an outpouring of bigoted hatred against an identifiable group. In Canada, this could be a criminal offense. Not every doctor is evil. Not all priests molest children. Not every Jew is *****. Not every Catholic is *****. Not every black person is *****. Fill in the blanks as...
  15. I read the whole content of the linked page. While I agree that it has a misunderstanding of intolerance, consider this: They say that intolerance is not as severe as an allergy, as people with intolerance may be able to accept some exposure. Logical conclusion: People with ALLERGIES can not accept ANY exposure. The third section then says, and I...
  16. Sometimes I wonder about just how far is too far. At times I think all plant products, whether processed or not, should carry the warning: Grown on a planet where wheat is grown. JK. I think But seriously, I know cross contamination is a risk, but at what point do you say it is small enough that you no longer care. I am sitting at the keyboard...
  17. Aside from this one, you have started two other threads: Any Guidelines for Losing Weight and Kellog's Corn Pops. They have had 22 and 5 replies respectively, as of a few minutes ago. I have not read them, so I can't comment on whether the replies were useful, or even on topic. But you have not been ignored. Sometimes it takes a while before somebody who...
  18. The following is a list of dry cat foods which I know to be gluten-free. It is not exhaustive. The list is in alphabetical order, and is not intended to be an endorsement of any or all of these foods, only a confirmation that they are not sources of gluten. Eukanuba Chicken & Rice Adult Eukanuba Indoor Iams Hairball Iams Indoor Iams Kitten Iams...
  19. Well, today was a busy day, and I didn't have a chance to spend time reading labels and other stuff. So, no list tonight. I'll see if it's a bit quieter tomorrow.
  20. What Elonwy says it all true. Most cat foods, and dog foods for that matter, have as primary ingredients protien sources (meat/fish) and carbohydrates. You can find ones without carbs, although they are not typical. Rice is the most common carbohydrate in the better foods, with corn also being common. Wheat is not common, but is in some foods. Barley is...
  21. Yup, if you are allergic to corn, you should avoid corn gluten.
  22. Corn gluten is safe for celiacs--it is quite different from the gluten in wheat, rye and barley.
  23. While I understand that artificial sweetners cause some adverse effects for some people, as a diabetic I know that, for me, sugars, however natural and organic they may be, cause me serious problems with my blood glucose control. So, for me, aspartame is much better than sugar, even though it has risks of its own. My wife sometimes says that I am sweet...
  24. In Canada and the US, maltodextrin is corn unless explicitly stated as something else. Modified food starch is usually corn, but you need to ask. Under the new US labelling rules, if it is wheat it must say so, but that does not rule out other gluten sources (although I have never seen a case of rye, barley or oat as starch). On a related note, maltose...
  25. Whoever told you that those were gluten-free is sadly misinformed. Barley is an excellent dietary source of gluten, and malting does not change that. Avoid anything with barley, which frequently appears in ingredient lists as simply "malt flavor."
