Oldest daughter has just been diagnosed. So, I've been gluten-free for 9 years, middle daughter for about 4, youngest daughter for 1 and now oldest's positive bloodwork makes it 4 for 4. At least she lives in Portland where shopping for gluten-free food and eating out is a heckuva lot easier than it is in rural Arkansas! And at least she's been familiar w/ the whole process for a really long time!

We go to Chilis occasionally. They have a wheat/gluten "allergy" menu and I've never had a problem there. Tonight, I ordered my usual... the baked potato soup and a house salad (w/o croutons). Two bites into the salad... I pulled out a tortilla strip!
They were very apologetic and took the salad off the bill... I was already full from the soup and didn't want another. The manager came and told us that he will often take such an order and prepare it himself as he understands/appreciates the need for compliance.
Just another example of how careful the wait staff/managers can be and how easily cross contamination can still ZAP us!!

I went to a restaurant a few years ago and they were happy to tell me that another server had celiac so she came over and told me all the things I could eat on the menu. My dinner came w/ a dessert of rice pudding... and just as I was about to put the first spoonful into my mouth, this celiac server HAPPENED by, saw me, and nearly knocked the spoon out of my hand!! Came to find out that their rice pudding IS NOT rice, but orzo pasta!!
First and last time I ate there!!

My last intentional glutening was about a year after I was diagnossed. I'd always loved making yummy loaves of beautiful bread and made several different kinds for a party. It smelled so danged good, I cut off a big hunk, slathered it w/ tons of butter, and chowed it down, while my daughter was yelling, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!" It was absolutely delicious.
And I had NO repurcussions... none. I started making a list, thinking that maybe I could plan a "cheat" once a month or so. Subway Tuna hoagie, Pizza Hut stuffed crust pizza, a bagel w/ tons of cream cheese and lox, a Philly cheese steak, a Big Mac, any pasta dish in an Italian restaurant...
I realized that I wasn't 100% gluten-free in my everyday diet... peeps here set me straight! My symptoms were fairly mild. The next time I was accidentally glutened, my reaction was way more severe and now I wouldn't put gluten in my mouth for anything!!
But, holy cow... was that bread good!!

Wheat in Twizzlers cracks me up! What's the purpose??
I only had symptoms for several months before finding out it was celiac... I was lucky, I guess. I could have used a little of that "unexplained weight loss" tho...

No Udi's in my neck of the woods... No Pamela's mix either. I buy it from Amazon too. I combine my order w/ an order of Tinyada pasta and shipping is FREE!
I make Pamela's bread mix into rolls and even their bagel alternative. I love it!!

I also replied in your other thread... I think they've just chosen a poor term. I think they MEAN gluten free, but all the other allergy listings are about allergies... like nuts. If they're updating it regularly, maybe they'd clarify it??
That SAID... they fry lots of stuff there. I'd be very skeptical about their french fries, which are listed as wheat free.
I've had several things there over the years w/ no problem, but I always have "the talk" when we go there.

I just looked at their allergen information and I didn't see anything for gluten. Only a wheat allergen page. Did I miss something? The copy on their website states it is effective through 7/12.
I'm assuming they're calling it a wheat allergy rather than celiac disease or a gluten intolerance. Chilis menu says wheat and gluten allergy. Their wording's not great.
What concerns me tho, is that they list french fries as safe, but they also have fried onion rings and other fried things at Applebees. I'd question them good about that one!

I've been gluten free for 9 years. Now I've come to the undeniable conclusion that dairy's the thing that's been giving me new and different problems for months! Believe it or not... I'm finding going dairy free much harder than going gluten free!
-
This is a double-edged sword for me. On one hand... I can't WAIT for the bisquick... I've missed dumplings in stew! On the other hand... I don't need ONE excuse to embrace convenience food!

Don't be scared! No everyone gains weight. Some gain a little... some of the weight they lost... and they're really happy about it. I did gain weight, but it was MY fault... not my gluten-free diet's fault. I ate too much. I filled up on breads and pastas that I COULD have to make up (in my mind) for all the things I could no longer have. I didn't eat lots of fresh veggies and fruits. I've changed my diet to bring back on those fresh things and have lost 20 of the 40 pounds I'd like to lose.
You've lost a pretty significant amount of weight (80 lbs), so you KNOW how to eat healthy. Continuing to eat healthy and not OVERDOSING on the gluten free carbs... which often have a higher glycemic index than other things... will help you maintain your awesome weight loss.

I can relate. I also am allergic to foods that are high in oxalic acid. These include spinach, beets, sweet potatoes, dark green leafy vegetables, berries, nuts, spices, soy, chocolate, tea, coffee and more. With me, the oxalic acid forms tiny crystals in my bladder and then peeing is very painful and I get all irritated afterwards. I felt like this was bad enough but now with all this gluten stuff, I feel rather overwhelmed. I just hope to hell I don't have dairy allergies or anything else.
That's exactly what my daughter's going thru (the 3rd in our family to be diagnosed). She's also cut out dairy and spices and so many things... she's down to about 5-6 kinds of protein and few veggies... no fruits, etc. She's getting too thin!!
-
I'll have horrible lower digestive issues... cramping, BIG D w/in an hour or 2... and will feel very barfy (but I always fight that one!!). The next day I'll be wiped out... foggy and hugging the couch.

Feeling better is the best thing... but allow yourself to grieve a little too. Even 9 years later... sometimes I look at the Chinese buffet restaurant and feel a pang of loss... even while I'm telling myself that I'm SO much better off not being able to eat so many things that are really BAD for me.
If you're not feeling 100% w/ all the stuff you've cut out... consider going completely gluten free and see how much better you feel!

I think its great that Wegeman's is offering you that kind of compensation and while it's really unfortunate that your child and yourself have gotten so sick...I think we, as celiacs, have the responsibility to read the labels even if its advertised gluten free. I've been in a lot of stores, including this particular Wegeman's, that have GLUTEN FREE signs but not all the products on that display are gluten free. It's a pain but it's better to be safe than sorry. I really hope all of you start to feel better soon!!!
That's sort of where I was going too. So... Wegman's had all this stuff on a gluten-free display and your husband bought a bunch and your daughter ate it and no one read the labels??

I really don't, but understand the dilemma. Before I cut most of the carbs out of my diet, I happily had a ham and swiss or turkey and swiss sandwich (on Pamela's yummy bread) w/ a big handful of chips every single day for lunch. Every day I'd say to my husband, "That was the best sandwich I've EVER had!"
No more sammies... now I eat about 1/2 cup brown rice and a big bunch of chopped broccoli and carrots nuked for lunch almost every day. I like the routine and love the flavor!
Supper is either a lean meat w/ lots of veggies or a big salad w/ whatever meat we had the night before. I've JUST mixed up a jar of the dairy-free ranch dressing I found on Recipezaar, which will complete my usual salad (I'm now cutting diary!).
And needless to say (before cutting out dairy), I could eat mac and cheese every single day for the rest of my life!!!
Guess I'm pretty boring!
-
I've been here for years, and I KNOW that if I EVER have a question about anything celiac related... this is the place for an answer... from peeps who live w/ celiac every day, just like me! I've been helped too... more times than I can count!

I think there's selfishness going on... but it's not yours! Why would your husband choose a restaurant knowing that you'd be able to eat nothing and then call you selfish for not wanting to go and drink only water? I think you're telling him to go w/o guilt and have a great time w/ your daughter is very selfless rather than selfish!!

Have you guys tried baking (like cookies) w/ Bob's certified gluten-free oats? They take so much longer to cook than even the not-instant Quaker oats... I was wondering how they are in cookies, etc?
-
If you google gluten free puff pastry, there's a recipe on there that I've been wanting to try but haven't... that might work for those flakey elephant ears!

I'll read up on microscopic colitis... and mention it to my doc when I see her next month. Thanks for any and all input!!

Does this happen first thing in the morning even on a day when you don't eat dairy?
I eat dairy every day... milk in my coffee, salad dressing on the big dinner salad I have for supper often, etc. But the mac and cheese last night was ALL milk and cheese... more dairy in one meal that I normally eat.
I planned to try rice milk and make vinegarettes ... and to cut out dairy for several months.

I've been gluten free for about 9 years, w/ few problems. I've completely embraced cooking differently and, while it's sometimes challenging, it's been a positive adventure!
Suddenly in the last few months, I've developed a new symptom! When I get up in the morning... I'm talking when my feet HIT the floor, I'm off to the bathroom to completely evacuate my bowels... always liquid, explosive, w/ lots of gas. Sometimes while I'm going to sleep and always in the morning before I get up, I can HEAR the storm in my lower intestines.
Last night, I think I hit upon the cause and I can't even wrap my head around it. I've been dieting, having recognized that I'm a total carb addict. I've been eating mostly lean meats, veggies, fruits, and very limited carbs, in the forms of occasional brown rice and limited bread or pasta to once or twice a week.
Last night was "cheat night." I decide during the day if I'll have my fave... homemade mac and cheese... or pizza (using Namaste crust mix). I made an awesome mac and cheese w/ really good cheeses and it was delicious! About 2 hours later, my bowels were evacuating... w/ liquid BMs and tons of frothy gas!!
From your experience... it's the dairy, isn't it?
Ugh... I don't want to think about it!!

THANK YOU for the creamed soup base recipes! I just spent an hour looking thru an awesome crockpot cooking list and every other recipe used a Campbells soup! Now, I can consider trying the recipes!!

My doc told me it was common in those of Irish ancestry (me, altho there's no fam history). I've read that it's also common in Jews (their dad, altho there's no fam history there either). The kids were doomed!! Oldest DD is just happy she got to eat gluten the longest.
