  1. I wondered if anyone has seen Schar ciabatta rolls in Safeways or other stores? I am from the UK where they are widely available (marketed as DS rolls). They are par-baked and are superb for sandwiches. Just need reheating for a few minutes. I have been informed by Schar that they are now available in the USA, but have yet to find them in the Bay Area...
  2. At the last count (things change) Marks and Spencer and Starbucks offered a gluten free sandwich, as do Waitrose (a less ubiquitous supermarket)--good for on-the-go travel. Last time in London I ate Indian food and Vietnamese; there are some other small chains that other people will know of (I have only been to London briefly). Pret a Manger sandwich shops...
  3. Starbuck's and Marks and Spenser offer some gluten free sandwiches (limited choices but useful for a quick lunch).
  4. I was diagnosed with microscopic colitis 6 months after being diagnosed with celiacs--basically I wasn't getting better on the gluten-free diet. My consultant told me there was no treatment for MC. I occasionally turn to Pepto Bismol when I am particularly bad. I have found lately that taking Metamucil--and a diet of high soluble fiber generally--may...
  5. I think the one in Westfield closed, unfortunately (it's not on their website) which is a shame, as it made a great central location. The one in Castro is definitely closed. BTW, an alternative place to eat downtown is the Macy's salad bar, in their basement. Does anyone know any other SF locations downtown, particularly for lunch time snacks?
  6. At Fisherman's Wharf today for my burger treat. When I asked for extra care in preparing my protein burgers the assistant pressed a button on the till for "allergy." She said that this was new system, to alert the preparers to the fact that they were dealing with food allergies. I was impressed by the whole service.
  7. My symptoms = constant diarrhea, urgency. No constipation . . .
  8. Ate there (San Francisco, Fisherman's Wharf) on Sunday when it was really quiet. Enjoyed a lot, but did notice that when they were making my burger it was on the same surface where they had buns . . . should I say something next time?
  9. Well, I am not an expert as I am pretty newly-diagnosed myself. The advantage of having my blood levels taken was that, as you suggest, I could get a measure of my improvement. It also indicated to me that I was basically getting my diet right (even though I tend to eat out a lot). This is useful knowledge. As my sickness continued after a few months...
  10. I took six months to feel any better. I had a colonoscopy and was found to have microscopic colitis (inflammation of large intestine). There is not much I can do about it, though it does tend to go into remittance of its own accord. Rather than giving up all those foods, you might a) find out if your gluten antibody levels have decreased see if it is...
  11. Diagnosed in December, it took me until May to experience any turn around, and, though I am no longer rushing to the toilet, I am still frequently not as solid as I would like to me. That said, after six months I do feel so much better. Be patient. If you are like me, you may get worse before you get better. Incidentally, after four months of not...
  12. It took me 6 months for me to get better! But I DID get better
  13. I cannot speak to the complexities of your personal situation (my own was quite complicated because I have other autoimmune disorders) but as a word of consolation, it took me nearly 6 months to feel better after going gluten free. I was going out of my mind listening to advice about this food allergy and that food allergy, but, at the end of the day, sometimes...
  14. Well, I can only get it frozen in San Francisco . . . but I ain't complaining--this stuff is amazing. I can actually make decent sandwiches. Great stuff!
  15. I have just bought my first loaf of Udi's bread here in San Francisco. I haven't tasted it yet--put it straight in the freezer. Most of the bread I see is frozen in the stores. Is this always the case with Udi's bread? Do people buy it frozen and then just defrost it for sandwiches?
  16. I would like to thank people from the bottom of my heart for all the kind words of support, plus the very practical advice, over the last few weeks. An update: my health has taken a turn for the better, after six months of going gluten-free. I am still learning (I didn't know that beef jerky contained gluten until yesterday after I had finished eating...
  17. Thank you. I appreciate your advise on anticipatory anxiety--a good label for some problems that I have!
  18. Yes, my addisons disease needs to be checked. I think my electrolyte levels were okay at the time I was diagnosed with celiacs . . . but since I should be healing then perhaps my dosage needs to be re-evaluated. Your food suggestions are very constructive. I find it hard to get a substitute for sandwiches that really satisfies, and my addisons makes me...
  19. Thank you for all your replies. I will peruse them carefully in my own time. Yes I am stressed and angry, but I am also suffering badly. I hardly leave my apartment because my stomach is so unreliable. Eating on the fly should not be the headache it is--with respect, making do with chocolate and chips, or finding the one option that MIGHT be available...
  20. Thank you all. I may have to see a counselor by the sound of it. I don't think there is a support group here (Oakland CA) but I will check it out.
  21. Thank you for your advice and words of encouragement. I have been gluten-free for six months now, and, yes, it is like a grieving process. I have many frustrations, but the one of the worst is finding something satisfying and quick and easy to eat during the day. I am stunned by the complete lack of options. I get depressed and angry. The gluten-free...
  22. Hi. Just read your post 'Should I Give Up My Job?' Your situation is REALLY similar to mine, except I'm an elementary school teacher. Can you take some medical leave? I had to go to my doctor and tell him I just couldn't do it any longer. I've been off for a year but hope to go back part-time soon. E-mail me if I can help, be glad to be there for you. I know what it's li...

  23. I was recently diagnosed with celiacs and microscopic colitis. I already have addisons disease. I have a demanding job as a university professor, under constant scrutiny. I used to enjoy the job despite the pressures. I could leave my apartment, take my grading with me, and watch the world go by as I graded stacks of papers. Now I am confined to my apartment...
  24. Thank you for your replies. Yes my diet has changed significantly. I eat lots and lots of rice, more whole foods such as veggies and fruit. It is quite a high fiber diet--but then it was before. I DO eat oats for breakfast, but now the uncontaminated variety. I dont eat much dairy, but do have a lot of lactose-free milk. Obviously I no longer can...
  25. Just wondered. Could my biopsy be wrong? My blood serology was high positive and my biopsy was positive, though I was given no details on extent of damage (led to believe fairly mild). I already have an auto-immune disease--Addison's disease--and wonder if this might have interfered with my blood antibodies. The reason I ask is that if I flasback five...
