ARCHIVED Munich, No Schnitzel Or Beer Steins...paris, No Crepes And Pastries
The Glutenator replied to The Glutenator's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks for saying this. I know, I know...I feel a bajillion times better after diagnosis and going gluten-free, but it still sucks a bit. My head says: if I had only found out about the celiac 4 months later this would be a non issue, haha. But stay positive! And thank you, really, for all your help and advice. It is going to be an amazing trip. Maybe... -
ARCHIVED Munich, No Schnitzel Or Beer Steins...paris, No Crepes And Pastries
The Glutenator posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am about to embark on a 2 month backpacking trip to Europe. I'll be starting in Vienna and Prague. Fortunately, I'll be visiting a friend in Prague, who has a Cantonese roommate. SHe is being great. We are going to cook most of the time and make sushi, gluten-free pad thai, and go to a grocery store with gluten-free stuff so I can stock up for Vienna... -
ARCHIVED Antibody Levels
The Glutenator replied to The Glutenator's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Good to hear. I am actually going away for the next couple months and won't have the endo until I get back, so the second biopsy will be over 6 months after being gluten-free. It's already booked and I wasn't very affected by it last time, so mind as well keep the appointment. It is really great to hear that I don't need to get too worried yet. -
ARCHIVED Antibody Levels
The Glutenator replied to The Glutenator's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sorry for the confusion, I have only had two tests. The first one for diagnosis, and now a second. The second test was after 6 weeks going gluten-free, but then I had two wait 2 and a half months for a follow up appointment (my scheduling issues, not the doctor's...but now that I feel so great no need to rush back to the appointments, haha). Thanks... -
I just got back from the gastroenterologist and am a bit confused. Before going gluten-free, my antibody levels were 53 when normal is 2 - 5 and anything above 18 is celiac. Needless to say I was a strong positive! About 6 weeks after going gluten-free I went for a second blood test and have finally gone for a follow up to get the results. My levels are...

ARCHIVED Starting To Forget
The Glutenator replied to The Glutenator's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I must say, I haven't been able to give up buns and baked goods, but my taste buds are just becoming accustomed to the gluten free products. For the past 8 weeks I have been visiting associates for work and taking a couple dozen donuts with me as a peace offering. I will be honest and say I really wanted one of those fluffy blobs of cakey goodness each... -
I have been gluten-free for about 4 months now, and am finally starting to forget what some gluten products taste like. This is great for me! The first few burgers I had this summer, I was totally bummed that the gluten-free buns were nothing like the very soft buns and mushy I was used to. But, last night I enjoyed a burger and didn't mind the bun. Same...

ARCHIVED Backapcking...does Cheap And Gr Exist In Europe
The Glutenator posted a topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I am about to leave for Europe for six weeks to do some backpacking in Vienna and Prauge then a few cities in Germany, France, and Spain. I have seen that some of these places are OK for gluten free, but only if you stick to higher end restaurants. On a student budget, these places aren't really an option for me. I am packing a couple cases of power bars... -
Just thought I would share a positive experience I had recently. For the vast majority of the population, eating asparagus makes your pee smell. As a geneticist, I have learned that there is a very small proportion of the population with a genetic condition that results in no smelly pee after eating asparagus. I have gone through life thinking I was one...

ARCHIVED Questions From Me, Imagine That!
The Glutenator replied to conniebky's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I miss licorice all sorts! But sweet tarts and most of the maynards candies (Cherry Blasters, Sour Patch Kids, Sour Patch Keys, Gummie Worms, Gummie Bears, Fuzzy Peach, Swedish Berries, Swedish Fish, Wild Strawberries, Wine Gums, Jujubes, Gum Drops) are examples of some good gluten free candy options. -
ARCHIVED Too Hard On Myself?
The Glutenator replied to The Glutenator's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ha ha. it is very comforting to hear we are all in the same boat. There is just a dash of the clam juice in the drink (and there can't be that much gluten in the clam juice), so luckily I didn't feel too horrible. Bye-bye favorite patio drink! You and beer will be sorely missed! And as a side note: my mom has had digestive issues for a while now, and... -

Thanks so much. You just try so hard to do the right thing for yourself and when the ball gets dropped...damn. But your encouragement is really appreciated. -
ARCHIVED Too Hard On Myself?
The Glutenator replied to The Glutenator's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh man I am just so frustrated with myself! Hence the second addition to this rant! Would really appreciate some support. -
I just went out for dinner with a friend. Called the restaurant ahead, double checked with the server that the cc issues were OK and the entree I chose was gluten free. Felt great. But, I ordered a caesar cocktail. Just looking now, I realize there is gluten in the clamato juice used. I am so hard on myself when this happens. I tried to hard to be safe...

ARCHIVED New To gluten-free Lifestyle And Having Trouble: Help!
The Glutenator replied to BethProverbs31's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
As a suggestion, I would get tested for celiac (blood work and biopsy) before going gluten free. If your doctor is suspicious, ask for the tests now. If you feel better gluten-free, it will be really hard to go back on gluten to get your diagnosis, and many people often don't. It is really worth knowing if and your daughter are celiac vs gluten sensitive... -
If it is an allergy instead of celiac the "only" harms to the body are the actual symptoms experienced. With that in mind, I say enjoy a beer for all of us who can't
-
We, unfortunately, need to use one of these words with the celiac way of life. But, which do you find more fun and catchier to say? I know the definition attached to the word has some awful associated symptoms, so we mind as well enjoy muttering the word itself!

ARCHIVED Not #2, But #1
The Glutenator replied to The Glutenator's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't think it a "uti", but it is interesting to hear others with the same problem! I still wonder whether it is celiac related...hmm. -
I am wondering if anyone else has urinary frequency issues along with bowel problems. I get up at least 2 times a night to go pee, though I can't remember this before the onset of celiac symptoms. I don't know if it is actually a urinary thing, or because there is so much else going on in my body, I am not sleeping as deeply so just go to the washroom as...

ARCHIVED Rice Vinegar
The Glutenator replied to The Glutenator's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks for you advice. I am only 3 months in too and have already had some cc side effects that have made me a bit paranoid and over-cautious. That being said, I don't want celiac to control my life, so sushi does seem like a good eating out option as long as we are careful. My goal is to be as safe as possible, but at 25 years old I still want to go out... -
I have been avoiding sushi since my celiac diagnosis because I heard they put rice vinegar in the rice, and that the rice vinegar can sometimes contain gluten. It seems on these forums, however, that sushi is safe to eat as long as there is not crab, tempura, or other gluten ingredients in the rolls. Can you please offer your advice? I love sushi and it...

I have been gluten-free for about 3 months now, and had my first self-caused "slip". For dinner last night, I requested beer can chicken which is one of my favorite barbeque foods. Half-way through the meal it struck me...BEER! No beer actually contacts the chicken...the chicken is cooked on a can with about 1/2 cup of beer mixed with water in it to make...

ARCHIVED Should I Give Up My Job?
The Glutenator replied to Streetlegal's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I used to be a sandwich fiend too. I have also found lunch the hardest meal to adapt to going gluten-free. My best suggestion is to make a batch of something you like on the weekend and pack it for the week. Try making gluten-free penne and mixing it with some tuna, onion, diced peppers and mayo. It is just like a tuna sandwich (OK...sort of). I regularly... -
ARCHIVED "you Look Run-Down"
The Glutenator replied to JustLovely9216's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
By the sounds of your activity level, your diet doesn't quite match up. I am very active too, and with the celiac on top of it all I need to eat a lot to maintain my weight. You should eat some more and exercise less. Hard to hear, I know, but looking and feeling tired, plus losing weight unintentionally are your body's cry for more food. I often have... -
I have been going through the same thing, but gained a couple pounds over the last two weeks, finally! It sounds a bit funny to say, but it was as much work as losing weight can be to a dieter. I was uncomfortably full all the time and had to consciously think about food to remind myself to eat dense foods so often. I added desserts to each lunch and dinner...
