  1. I am even considering trying the opposite next time I get glutenated: imodium. The damage has already been done and it will help with symptom management.
  2. Just symptoms, the way I understand it. For us celiacs, there is damage to the intestine due to the autoimmune reaction. If you have a gluten intolerance you just have to worry about the nasty symptoms.
  3. There is another post on here about using a laxative to get the gluten out faster. I am thinking imodium is a more logical solution, though.
  4. I am just wondering if taking imodium is a good idea after being glutenated. It would sure help with the frequent bathroom trips, but it would also keep gluten in my system for longer. Any one tired it, or have alternative ways to manage the side effects of glutenation?
  5. I have this problem, too! For example I have gone to restaurants with gluten free desserts two days in a row now. When this happens, I usually have dessert with my meal, and order something else to go for later. I am such a sucker for baked goods, and we don't get fresh stuff very often on a gluten-free diet! If I go to a gluten-free restaurant for lunch...
  6. That is so great to hear. I am bummed to not be able to have beer and schnitzel in Germany, pastries in Paris, and local Spanish cuisine. But knowing that I won't starve is a comfort!
  7. I am active with exercise, so that could be part of it. For now, just going to eat more calorie dense foods and more often. Once I get my weight up a bit, I can go back o eating what I have been (still a lot) and hopefully stay stable. Come on muscle...
  8. I just saw my GI today, and he said that any time now, as my intestines heal, I'll start retaining more nutrients and my weight will go up. He was poking around my abdomen and said, due to muscle depletion, my abdominal walls are weak and my kidneys and other organs aren't very protected. Eek! So more brownies and cheesecake for now! Could be healthy...
  9. As a 24 year old, eating out is a huge part of my social life that I didn't want to give up. I got diagnosed with celiac about 3 months ago and have already been out a few times. I actually went to a restaurant with a gluten-free menu on the way home from my endoscopy to bite the bullet! You just have to be smart about it, for example I would be cautious...
  10. Its great to hear that there is hope, then. I mean, I like having dessert every night, but it is less of a treat when it is part of your daily routine! Finger's crossed that my body will start to settle at some point too. I am spending some time in Europe in August, and would like to put on a bit of weight before then. I am tiny right now, and since most...
  11. It can be socially awkward. I try to keep snacks around, but my friends are just getting used to me always munching on something. Since I am pretty tiny, when people see me consistently eating the quantities I do they begin to have questions! Gah.
  12. It seems as though, no matter how much I eat, my body can barely keep up. Has anyone else noticed this with the celiac diagnosis? I am usually hungry, but even if I'm not I''m diligent about snacking between meals, plus my meals are just bigger than those around me. Add to that the fact that gluten-free processed foods tend to be more calorie dense than...
  13. Changed topic
  14. This is a late reply, but I think your hunger pains are just your body needing more food. I agree that it sounds like you are just not eating enough. Your body is also healing now, and it just may need more calories and nutrients. i would try rolling with the hunger cues for a while. If you start gaining weight, then re-consider, but for now try trusting...
  15. I will actually be doing the traveling alone. I am going to Germany for a work conference, then taking the opportunity to travel after. A travel partner would be ideal, though unfortunately my student-friends don't have the money and my working friends don't have the time at this stage in life. I have spent a couple months backpacking in Peru, Ecuador...
  16. Thanks for all your support. I am 24 and my parents have actually said they "forbid" me to go because they are so worried. I don' know what to say to ease their minds and it is really stressing me out.

  18. I have the chance to backpack around France and Spain for a month. I don't want celiac to prevent me from traveling, and would appreciate how to eat and stay gluten-free (with out starving) for a month in France and Spain. Thanks!
  19. I have the opportunity to go to Germany for work, and want to take a month off after the conference to go to France and Spain. I am very exited, but apprehensive about the eating situation. I don't want celiac disease to prevent me from traveling as I think it is an amazing part of life! my family has also voiced there concerns and some think I should...
  20. Yeah, that is the hard part. And, without being stereotypical, it is usually tricky to get your message across in a place where the workers are non-english speakers. I ask for the person who speaks the best English, and as plainly as I can say I want "just rice, plain rice" in my rolls. You can try saying not vinegar too, and they may understand. Also...
  21. Just a note about the sushi. They put rice vinegar in the sticky rice, and a lot of rice vinegars have gluten in them. Whenever I go for sushi, I ask that a fresh batch of rice be made without rice vinegar added to ensure it is safe. Just a suggestion so you can still enjoy sushi in the future!
  22. I had a very strong positive blood test and response to the gluten-free diet, with a negative biopsy, The Dr. only took 4 samples, though, and I am absolutely positive he missed the affected areas and that I have celiac. I have a colonoscopy now scheduled for this week. What can be seen in a colonoscopy that was missed in the endoscopy and blood work?
  23. Just wondering if anyone else gets night sweats. It seems to happen more often after I have been glutenated, and for a few nights I wake up almost soaked. Anyone else experience this on a regular basis or after being glutenated?
  24. First of all, I am sorry to hear about your new diagnosis. But, as frustrating as it can be at the outset, once you are on the diet for a little while you will begin to feel magnitudes better and it will be worth all the adjustments you have to make. It is interesting to hear that you do not feel very symptomatic, and after a couple months gluten-free you...
  25. I can completely agree with what you are experiencing. Before I went gluten-free I was absolutely always hungry and was eating all of the time. After the initial withdrawal period going gluten-free, my appetite was hugely reduced. I still try to eat 3 meals and 2 snacks a day, but have to remind myself to do it often and feel like I am eating when not...
