The chicken sends up red flags for me. Sure, they don't use gluten ingredients, but all it takes is one worker to be careless that day and that batch is CCed. If you can, cook up a few chicken breasts at home and use those to top your salads.

ARCHIVED Cider - Does It Effect You?
i-geek replied to Woodstone's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Which brand are you drinking? Not all ciders are gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED Dry Beans
i-geek replied to olygirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Rancho Gordo = LOVE. I just received my third shipment from them. My favorites are the Rio Zapes (like pintos, only better, somehow) and Santa Maria Pinquitos (just plain good). Borlotti beans are terrific with pesto and the Vaqueros are great in soup (in fact, I've been enjoying a batch of the Bean and Vegetable Posole- recipe on their website- with Vaqueros... -
ARCHIVED Damn. Help Me Go Dairy-Free Too.
i-geek replied to danaf617's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Eggs are fine. I had to give up all dairy, including butter, for a couple of months to let my gut heal. Casein is a hard protein to digest, and that plus lactose often means disaster for a damaged gut. If it makes you feel better, this might be temporary for you. My dairy-intolerance was. I'm 7 months gluten-free and can once again eat regular cheese, yogurt... -
ARCHIVED Noob Here-Introducing Myself
i-geek replied to Aphreal's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Something to consider: to even have a hope of a positive test result, you need to still be on gluten. Even if you do get a negative (false negatives are extremely common with celiac blood tests), if gluten-free is giving you this much relief, stick with it. You are the expert on your body. I've had mild GI issues with occasional severe flare-ups for years... -
ARCHIVED Assuming Some Foods Are Gluten Free
i-geek replied to MWIXON's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Or what they coated it in to get it nice and brown. I was watching an episode of "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" and at one of the featured diners, the chef dipped all of the burgers in flour before tossing them on the griddle. As far as I could tell, this wasn't advertised to the customers. So even if you went there and ordered a burger grilled on foil, no... -
ARCHIVED Assuming Some Foods Are Gluten Free
i-geek replied to MWIXON's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Exactly. I went to a barbecue recently and was glad I had my own food. People were grabbing whole wheat hamburger buns and then sticking their glutened hands right into the chip bags and fruit salad bowl- enough cross-contamination to make me sick for sure. And even in a situation with foods in separate bowls with serving spoons: people are sloppy. Sometimes... -
I haven't had any problems with unflavored coffees. We buy whole beans and grind them ourselves at home. We've bought: Meijer brand, Starbucks, Whole Foods 365, Gevalia, Seattle's Best, and beans from the bulk bins at a local specialty store (coffee is the only thing they sell in bulk). So far so good. We don't buy flavored coffees simply because it's usually...

ARCHIVED How Do U Clean Gluten Off A Grill?
i-geek replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Since I've gotten glutened from a grill surface, I don't grill anywhere but on our home grills without aluminum foil. Not worth the risk IMO. -
ARCHIVED Annoying Mouth Problems
i-geek replied to Kim27's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Mine are always on the sides of the tongue, right where my tongue bumps up against my molars. They're pretty much gone after 7 months gluten-free but flare up a bit if I'm CCed. -
ARCHIVED Allergic To Deodorant?

Thanks for catching that! Very good point. -
ARCHIVED Self Diagnosed- And Fell Off The Wagon
i-geek replied to BcG3987's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yes. Also, Kinnikinnick gluten-free hamburger and hot dog buns are excellent. They're sold in the freezer section of some stores. Udi's bread is also wonderful and could also be used in place of hamburger buns. I make homemade mac-and-cheese using the same recipe I used for years pre-gluten-free with two changes: Ancient Harvest corn-quinoa elbow... -
ARCHIVED Allergic To Deodorant?
i-geek replied to Nia Lee's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I know that feeling. I did some scouting around for homemade deodorants when I was having my own nasty reaction and came across this one: Open Original Shared Link. It looks fairly gentle and you can make it with more starch/less soda for sensitive skin and arrowroot starch instead of corn starch if you're corn-allergic. Disclaimer: I haven't tried it yet... -
ARCHIVED Feeling Sick After Eating Anything.
i-geek replied to RideAllWays's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sometimes rice gives me GI problems. Other times it's fine. I try to rotate my starches so that I'm not eating rice too often. If you've been eating a lot of rice lately, you could try a rice-free week and see if your symptoms improve. And yeah, a food diary is pretty much just writing down everything you eat and when in the hopes of pinpointing problem... -
ARCHIVED Ever Thought About Airborne Gluten?
i-geek replied to irish daveyboy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I wondered about this. I got glutened last weekend. I was at a different grocery store than usual. The employees were definitely baking there, and the bakery was right next to produce, where I did most of my shopping. I walked out with my clothes and hair smelling like a bakery. Went home, ate leftovers from the previous night's dinner (all prepped at home... -
ARCHIVED Allergic To Deodorant?
i-geek replied to Nia Lee's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You haven't recently switched to a "natural" deodorant with zinc ricinoleate, have you? I ask because I recently switched from my usual anti-perspirant to a deodorant in the hopes that the deodorant wouldn't stain my clothing and clog my pores (two long-standing problems). I tried Tom's of Maine's long-lasting deodorant with zinc ricinoleate, and my armpits... -
ARCHIVED Labeled "gluten Free" Vs. No Gluten Listed In Label
i-geek replied to chilligirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I generally avoid such products since cross-contamination is quite possible if the manufacturer doesn't thoroughly clean the lines after making a batch of gluten foods. I'm sure there are others who have no problem with such products, but I've been CCed enough times and paid the price for it that I don't take chances. -
I'm thinking that the company doesn't understand what "gluten-free" means. I don't think I would trust any of their products.

ARCHIVED Celiac Disease And Infertility
i-geek replied to taradorff's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'm 32. We started trying to have children 6 years ago. I didn't suspect celiac until last fall and didn't go gluten-free until late December. No pregnancy yet, but I'm guessing years of latent-with-flareups disease isn't going to fully heal in 6 months. I think my friend with celiac said it took three years after going gluten-free to conceive her second... -
ARCHIVED Post Your Typical Mealplan
i-geek replied to revenant's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Today (this is fairly typical): Breakfast: Two slices thick-cut bacon, two eggs fried in butter, half a brown rice cake topped with cheddar (sometimes it's peanut butter instead of cheese), black coffee. Snack: Larabar Lunch: leftovers from previous night's dinner, so today will be a grilled chicken drumstick and homemade quinoa-veggie pilaf, with... -
ARCHIVED Question About Dairy....
i-geek replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Lactose intolerance would have been my guess as well. I've been moderately lactose-intolerant since my teen years (could eat cheese, butter, yogurt with no problems but needed a Lactaid supplement for milk or ice cream), but when my health started going downhill last September I lost even the ability to digest butter- I think at that point the gut damage... -
ARCHIVED Labeled "gluten Free" Vs. No Gluten Listed In Label
i-geek replied to chilligirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm kind of in between. If there are no gluten ingredients listed, the product is not likely to be CCed, and it wasn't produced on shared lines with wheat, I'll use it and so far that has worked well. But in general, we don't eat a lot of processed foods. Husband has allergies to some of the artificial preservatives and colors so it's safer for both of us... -
Depends on the Whole Foods. In the one by me, it's thawed and sold on the regular bread rack. I doubt I would have ever noticed it if I hadn't been looking for something for the husband and if I didn't recognize the brand name. I don't remember seeing it in the freezer cases.
-
We split our Kinnikinnick hot dog buns and tossed them right on the grill to thaw. Worked like a charm. They were good, too. I find that I don't eat bread much anymore but when we want it, Udi's is perfect. I think I always buy the whole-grain one from Whole Foods. It does make a great grilled cheese.

ARCHIVED Sad About Communion Today
i-geek replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I sit near the front and only receive Eucharist from the cup. I haven't had a problem doing this yet. If I'm visiting a parish that only offers the bread, I stay in the pew.
