ARCHIVED Jake's Gluten Free Market
BethM55 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
While visiting family, I found this store, based in Boise, Idaho, but they mail order from their website. Their lemon muffins are to swoon over. The french bread tastes like, well, french bread! Unfortunately I couldn't try the sourdough bread because they were having a problem with the starter, and were growing more. They bake these and other gluten... -
There are apps to help you find gluten-free friendly places to eat. Find Me Gluten Free is a popular one. I've used it when we travel.

ARCHIVED As An Adult, Can I 'outgrow' Ncgs?
BethM55 replied to BethM55's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Thank you. I suspect you are correct. Sometimes I get a bit cranky and wishful, wanting to not have to deal with this. However, being gluten free is a far easier burden than many other treatments other illnesses require. I need to remind myself that everyone has a 'wierdness' of some sort or other. NCGS is mine. One of mine, anyway. -
ARCHIVED Help Please!
BethM55 replied to beth01's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I like Better Than Bouillon, usually buy the organically sourced version. It's lower sodium than bouillon cubes, tastes better, The ingredients in the Organic Better than Bouillon chicken base are: chicken meat with natural juices, salt, cane juice solids, maltodextrin, flavoring, yeast extract, potato starch, turmeric, natural flavor*. (all organic) ... -
Is your daughter old enough to know to avoid gluten containing food, and to know which foods are problems? Not to share food with other kids? If you can work only with the teacher, that could be enough, especially since the nurse and the administration have essentially said 'not my problem'. If the teacher is willing, keep a supply of safe snacks for your...

I'm so sorry that your son's health has to be compromised because of bureacratic nonsense. I hope this can be worked out for his best well being. Sounds like that district physician needs to be replaced with someone who has some real medical knowledge and compassion for the health of the children.

ARCHIVED As An Adult, Can I 'outgrow' Ncgs?
BethM55 replied to BethM55's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi. No, I had no testing prior to becoming gluten free. I read that many people who have fibromyalgia are gluten sensitive, so I decided to give it a try. I felt better. Not cured, but better. I told my doctor well after the fact, and she did not push for a gluten trial and testing. I'm pretty sure I'm not true celiac, just someone with a wonky immune... -
ARCHIVED As An Adult, Can I 'outgrow' Ncgs?
BethM55 replied to BethM55's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hello, Karen. I'm sensitive to gluten, but not super sensitive. If there is a better forum, please do move my post, thank you. Problem for me is differentiating what is causing my symptoms to flare, since gluten is only one of several stressors that can trigger the fibro. I think I have moments when I wonder if I've diagnosed myself correctly. ... -
ARCHIVED As An Adult, Can I 'outgrow' Ncgs?
BethM55 posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I am self diagnosed NCGS, for about 5 years now. I am strictly gluten free. Gluten ingestion triggers my fibromyalgia symptoms, including joint and muscle pain, headaches, fatigue, and depression. Until about a year ago, I did not have GI reactions to gluten, but now that seems to be part of the mix as well. (Usually diarrhea.) My question is whether... -
I like the way your son's doctor thinks! However, I don't approve that the district physician was able to overrule your son's doc. The needs of the child come FIRST. And an established diagnosis supercedes the opinion of the district doc. At least IMHO. Makes me very angry when the needs of the child are not met at school because the administration thinks...

Beth, I'm not sure about the laws in other states, but in California, if your child has a medical condition that requires accomodations at school you can request a meeting to develop a '504 Plan', for "other health impaired". If you bring in medical orders from your daughter's doctor, those must be included and accomodated to the greatest extent possible...

You have every right to be angry. As a nurse specializing in child health/school health, I have often told parents to listen to their children, and doctors to listen to their patients and to their patients' parents, because the parents know their kids. Doctors don't like problems that can't be found on lab tests, or are off the mainstream of usual ills...

Hi. I've heard positive comments about living gluten free in Australia from others, too. Good to hear the schools are another positive for you and your young ones. The school systems in the US could learn a thing or two from Australia, in regards to keeping students with allergies safe in the school environment! Also, someone else mentioned Zyrtec (cetirizine...

Hi. I am a credentialed school nurse in California, have been for many years. In fact am about to retire. Perhaps I can help with the school health issues?

I can see why the source of your hives is such a mystery! Maybe you are allergic to real food! Is it possible there is something in conventional fabrics, such as pesticide residue or something similar, that causes this? I'm thinking anything that touches your skin. Or a product someone else in the house uses? I think I read somewhere that people...

Hives are crazy-making. I'm so sorry you have them! A couple of things... artificial colors and dyes can cause hives, such as yellow and red dyes in foods and medicines. In addition (and you are probably already doing this!) check your laundry products for colors, scents, chemicals that irritate, etc. Maybe a product like Dreft for babies...

ARCHIVED Friends Who Don't Get It
BethM55 replied to QuirkyVeganGirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I just started reading Gluten Freedom, a book by Alessio Fasang, MD. The book has been available since the end of April, 2014. It has excellent information about celiac and NCGS. Might be a good resource for you, and to share with your friends. Perhaps if they understand the science behind the illnesses they might understand your needs better. -
Also, I second the Mariposa Bakery. Their gluten-free cinnamon rolls are eye-rolling, stop what you are doing and enjoy them, tasty.

If you want to visit Pacifica (lovely coastal town about 12 miles south of SF), The Surf Spot is an excellent place for gluten free dining. They are closed on Mondays. I know you specified no pizza, but they do make an awesome gluten-free pizza in addition to other lovely foods and desserts, and gluten free rolls made in-house. There is an outdoor area...

ARCHIVED Ham And Deli Meats
BethM55 replied to gilligan's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Primo Taglio deli meats are gluten free. Their Ham Off the Bone is excellent. I don't know if you can get a whole or half ham, but I've had the person give me a slice about 2 inches thick, which makes a lovely dinner for two. It's lovely thin sliced for sandwiches, too. (on Udi's bread, of course!) Honey Baked Hams says their hams are gluten free, but... -
ARCHIVED Coconut Oil/milk
BethM55 replied to FruitEnthusiast's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I second the shea butter idea, but remember that it is a tree nut. If you have problems with tree nuts, you may also be sensitive to shea nut butter. The Alba company has a nice lotion that comes unscented. I don't like anything scented and do well with this product for face and body. I usually buy it from Vitacost.com, as their price is much better... -

ARCHIVED Oatmeal Toppings
BethM55 replied to BlessedMommy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I like oatmeal with brown sugar or real maple syrup, cinnamon, walnuts and blueberries. Or strawberries. Or cherries. Or cut up banana. Or cut up apple. Almost any fruit except citrus. And add cream or whole milk (from grassfed , organically raised cows if at all possible). There are many recipes out there for 'oatmeal in a jar', that you prepare...
