  1. Thank you both. The recipe was in the current issue of Mother Earth News. I wonder if the 350 temp was a typo. I may email them and ask. I'll try this recipe again at 450, and mbrookes recipe too. mbrookes, will fine yellow cornmeal work for your recipe as well as white cornmeal does?
  2. Yesterday, I made a basic cornbread: 2 cups fine cornmeal, 2 eggs, 2 cups buttermilk, baking soda, salt, sugar, butter for the baking pan. I didn't have buttermilk, so I added 2% milk to 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar, to make two cups, as needed for the recipe. It was a very thin batter, but I poured it into the hot buttered 8" square baking dish...
  3. Actually, I used their frozen crust, and made the pizza at home. I didn't know they make pizzas on the premises! I don't shop there too often, it's far from home.
  4. I'm reacting to something I ate yesterday, and am trying to figure out what got me. I tried a gluten free pizza crust from Whole Foods Market last night, first time I've eaten it. Has anyone had any problems with this product? The only other new food was raspberry tart cookies from Katz Gluten Free, but they are a dedicated gluten-free facility. Gack...

    ARCHIVED Benihanas

Well, we DID go to Benihana's. I was not impressed, as it was crowded, noisy, overpriced, and there was a definite language barrier with the staff. That was problem for me, as you can imagine. I ordered a salad, which was quite unimpressive, as it was mostly iceberg lettuce. The added bits of avocado and tomato and such were nice, but it was overpriced...

    ARCHIVED Benihanas

Well the point has become moot, as we are not going to join the party after all, for various reasons. Thank you for the great suggestions, though! It's good to have a place like this where everyone understands the issues.
  7. Well, I've never been a fan of sushi, and don't care for edemamae although I do tolerate soy. Gosh sometimes we have to find convoluted ways to stay healthy, don't we?
  8. That's a good possibility. I could bring something to put over steamed rice. Hmmm, let me think... Thanks!
  9. Good point. Guess it'll be rice and salad, and I can live with that. This event is for my daughter-'out-law''s birthday, her choice of restaurant. I'll be content with the festivities. Sometimes it's easier than other times, but I try to be philosophical about times like this.
  10. Good idea! I've had teriyaki, and like it, but what is teppenyaki? I think I remember seeing that term on their website? I'm not too familiar with Japanese cuisine. I figure I could bring my own gluten-free soy sauce?
  11. Well, if we go, I may stick to a salad and steamed rice. I'll talk to the people there see what they say. I'll be at the event for the people and the birthday, not necessarily for the food. oh, well. C'est la vie. "Dear Elizabeth, Thank you for your email. We understand how important it is for you to obtain information on gluten-free products...

    ARCHIVED Benihanas

Our daughter-"out-law" wants to go to dinner at Benihana's for her birthday. I'm leery of going there, after reading posts here. I emailed them today, as I just found out about the plans, which are for Sunday, this weekend. We'll probably go, even if I just order steamed rice and tea, and bring my own soy sauce. In this climate of gluten free cooperation...
  13. I believe that Juice Plus gummy vitamins are gluten free.
  14. I've been using Desert Essence toothpaste for several years. I use the fennel flavor, because mint in dental care products irritates my mouth. I can eat and drink all the mint I want, just can't use the dental products. This toothpaste contains tea tree oil. Since I've been using it, my dental hygienist complains that she doesn't have enough to do...
  15. I use Alba hair and skin care products. Have had no problems with them. I have curly hair also, and their line of shampoo and conditioner has worked well for me. I use Dr. Bronner's leave in conditioner. The one in the purple pump bottle, not sure what it's called, I'm not at home right now. I buy from VitaCost.com, because they have what I need and their...
  16. Thank you. Well written, and I agree with you. I'm self diagnosed, and there is no way I'd eat gluten and be miserable just to prove my point. I'm not 'cured' of all my symptoms, but I feel much better off gluten than on it. People need to understand that yes, even just a little will hurt, even though everyone has a different level of sensitivity....
  17. According to the Rice Dream website (www.TasteTheDream.com), RICE DREAM Shelf Stable Non-Dairy Beverages are gluten free. Ok, now I'm confused...
  18. I'm SO glad it's not just me!
  19. Commercial shredded cheese generally contains more than cheese, however. Anti-caking agents and other chemicals that, IMHO, do not belong on cheese. Ok, I'm a bit of a purist, and maybe a cheese snob... But I prefer to avoid extra chemicals in my food. Give me real cheese, please!
  20. Good point. I'll keep that in mind and ask next time. I'm fortunate not to be as sensitive as some to CC, but I'd like to avoid it anyway. So far so good today... I asked for and the server brought a plate of dipping oil, so I could dip the bread I brought with me. We left a nice tip for her. She was pleasant and helpful, worked to be sure my dinner...
  21. We had out of town guests this weekend, and consequently ate several meals out. Twice, after discussing gluten free with the servers, they came back and questioned me about cheese. "The chef says you can't have this item because there is cheese on it." "OMG, there's cheese on your salad! Is that ok???" I'm pleased they are asking and alert, but they...
  22. Milk, cheese, and butter can be frozen for longer storage. (although I find that once cheese has been frozen it tends to be very crumbly.) Yogurt is easy to make. How wonderful that you've found this farmer who is so conscientious about her dairy cows, and that you support her efforts. Good find!
  23. This is the reply I received from General Mills: "Thank you for contacting General Mills regarding product prices. We are committed to providing products of superior quality and value. There are a number of factors that affect the price of food products. These factors include ingredients, manufacturing, packaging, transportation, advertising and promotions...
  24. Soft boiled or poached eggs are safe, too, and not something I often make at home. I bring a couple of slices of Udi's bread with me, and ask for fresh fruit instead of the toast.
