If I put my cutting boards through the dishwasher, will that de-gluten them?
-
LDJofDenver, thank you. I hadn't thought about my old hand mixer being a contamination source, but of course it is! Well, this is the push I needed to recycle my ancient, avocado green (really!) hand mixer. Out with the old! I did thorougly clean my VitaMix, though.

Your very own gluten free toaster or toaster oven would help, too. Can you label your own jars of peanut butter, jam, butter, etc, and have other people respect that? Hmmm, I'm seeing your own refrigerator in your room, too. Sounds like it might be easier to move in with your friend!

ARCHIVED Grocery Store Rotisserie Chicken
BethM55 replied to penguin's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yes! Also chicken parts, but use them with skin and bone, and if you will be slow cooking them all day, start with them frozen. Spray the inside of the crockpot with non-stick spray, add about half of the chicken parts, pour gluten-free barbecue sauce over, add the rest of the chicken, pour more sauce, cover, cook on low for 6-8 hours. I find this... -
ARCHIVED I Can't Commit To Gluten Free Without Some Sweets!

Also, KnickKnick brand of cookies called KooToo's (I think) are darn close to Oreos. Better, too, I think. -
ARCHIVED I Can't Commit To Gluten Free Without Some Sweets!
BethM55 replied to ohitsonlynicole's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm about 4 and a half months into being gluten free, and just very recently found that my insane cravings for sweet and baked stuff is calming down. Some of that might be because maybe I'm getting over the feelings of deprivation that were drowning me initially. There's so much that I CAN eat! And maybe because, as others have said, I'm healing, and my... -
ARCHIVED This Is Insanity!
BethM55 replied to Betty Boop's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I would suspect lip products and toothpastes need to be gluten-free, since they are often ingested. I just emailed the Desert Essence company, as I use their toothpaste and lip balm. If and when they reply, I'll post it here. -
ARCHIVED Looking For Some Help For My Son....
BethM55 replied to Nolan'smom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Knick-Knick's gluten-free version of Oreo cookies (called Koo-toos or something like that??) are pretty darn addictive. They taste VERY close to actual Oreos. Actually, I prefer the gluten-free version. I don't buy them very often, as they are just too tempting. I second what has been said already about a mourning and adjustment period. It's not easy... -
Bea, a support group is an excellent idea. Have you thought about how to go about starting it? I hadn't thought about oat straw as possibly containing gluten. It's the dried stalk of the oat plant. I'll see what I can find out about that. I'll be offline most of the weekend, though, so it will have to wait til next week. --Beth.

Bea, thanks for your reply. Have you tried drinking herbal infusions for the silica? Horsetail? Oat straw? Just wondering, looking for ways to make remedies at home. I've never tolerated B-complex vitamins well, usually ended up with nausea from them. How are the co-enzyme B complex vitamins different? I'm intrigued with your success with these...

ARCHIVED Fruits And Vegetables!
BethM55 replied to dhiltonlittle's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh YEAH! BERRIES!! Our local farmers market opens next week, and I am hoping to dive into berry season. I figure that with everything I can NOT eat, I can splurge on all the berries I want. I freeze them for later, too. We belong to a CSA that contracts with a marvelous berry grower. Can't wait! -
ARCHIVED I Hate Feeling Like I Am Crazy....
BethM55 replied to tictax707's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I hear ya'. I'm finally realizing that when I'm moody and irritable, it's likely I've been glutened. Of course, there's PMS, family, etc, etc, but I'm thinking that when I get that really out of control, out of body, wanting to bite someone's head off irritability and depression and despair, gluten could easily be the culprit. Sigh. It's more complicated... -
I realized yesterday that I've been gluten free for **only** 4 months. In my mind it's been that plus one year. I don't know why I've thought that, other than I've been so focused on this topic. Only 4 months. No wonder I don't have it down 100% yet! Sort of feels like a lifetime...

Wow, this all sounds a lot like fibromyalgia pain. Suppose it could all be related??? My general body aches and joint pain and brain fog are definitely less when I am vigilant about staying gluten free. I made a few more changes at home, including my own, labeled peanut butter jar and butter tub, which has helped. Yolo, what brand of silica do you...

ARCHIVED Finger Nail Abnormalities
BethM55 replied to k2626's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Interesting topic. For the past several months I've had serious splitting and peeling problems with my fingernails, especially thumbs and index fingers, and right middle finger. It's somewhat better since I've been remembering to take fish oil capsules every day. It's annoying and looks awful, but every time the nails grow out to where they might start... -
ARCHIVED Successful gluten-free Cake Mix Result!

Just a comment... one of my guests last night is allergic to nuts, so did not eat the cupcakes. I hadn't thought of that. Are chestnuts actually nuts?? -
ARCHIVED Successful gluten-free Cake Mix Result!
BethM55 replied to BethM55's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi, Allison. I didn't notice the chestnut flour, although the texture and taste of the cupcakes was rich and smooth. The raw batter was silky and shiny, and very tasty. I've found that many raw gluten-free batters or doughs do not taste very good, at least to me. I can get the chestnut flour at my favorite healthy foods store too, but it's quite expensive... -
ARCHIVED Successful gluten-free Cake Mix Result!
BethM55 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Last night I made cupcakes from Dowd & Rogers Gluten Free Dutch Chocolate Cake Mix with Italian Chestnut Flour. Yum! I iced them with a lemon glaze, Yum again! They were a little flat on top, but were light and moist, very chocolaty. My son and his friends (all adults) were here for dinner, hence the dessert baking. No great raves from them, but... -
First off, for brownies, the Trader Joe's gluten free brownie mix is superb. I've had people rave over it when I take a platter of them to a potluck, and go after them like locusts, leaving the wheat brownies untouched. When I make them at home, sometimes they don't even make it out of the pan! They are a great intro to gluten-free baked goods for the...

ARCHIVED Italian Chestnut Flour?
BethM55 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yesterday, I bought a gluten free cake mix that contains Italian Chestnut Flour. The store also had bags of this flour available. It's kinda pricey, so I didn't buy the bag of the flour, but the cake mix looked very interesting. It's by Dowd and Rogers. Has anyone heard of or used this brand or this flour? I'm very curious about it! -

ARCHIVED Gluten Free In Spokane, Wa?
BethM55 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
When we travel next month, our first stop will be Spokane, WA. I'd appreciate suggestions for grocery or other stores where I can stock up on gluten free groceries for the rest of the trip, so I don't have to fly with too much food. Anywhere to buy Udi's bread in Spokane? I'd also appreciate safe restaurants there, particularly breakfast. Thanks!... -
I bought a small spray bottle of Bragg's Liquid Aminos today. Very tasty, like good soy sauce, although seems very salty. I've never used soy sauce much, so I'm not sure how to use the Bragg's. I sprayed some on steamed cauliflower tonight. Suggestions for how else to use it? Thanks!

ARCHIVED Regret Being Gluten Free?
BethM55 replied to BethM55's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think it does make sense that we react more strongly to accidental 'glutening', once our bodies are clear of it for awhile. Sad but true. Maybe it is just a bigger contrast between how we feel being gluten free as opposed to the constant feeling of illness we were used to before. Does that make sense? Anyway, there is a risk of contamination anywhere...
