  1. I agree with others here who have said that most unprocessed foods are naturally gluten free. A bowl of fresh berries has become one of my all time favorite desserts. Add whipped cream, if you tolerate dairy, and there's an amazing gluten free treat! I make my own gluten-free granola, which makes a great snack or meal, depending on time of day or additions...
  2. Yes, a shmoo! Thank you, you have a good memory. "Drawn by Al Capp in his comic strip Li'l Abner in 1948. The Shmoo is a small lovable creature. It laid eggs, gave milk, and died of sheer extacy when looked at with hunger. The shmoo loved to be eaten and could taste like any food you desire. Shmoo hide, cut thin, made a fine leather. Even shmoo whiskers...
  3. I know this is off topic, but what is your picture? I remember that cartoon character, but can't remember from what!
  4. I enjoy the Living Without magazine and website, although the print magazine is kinda pricey. I signed up for emails from the website, and get recipes. The website is helpful, you might want to check it out. (livingwithout.com)
  5. Excellent idea, Skylark! Although I have a very long work day tomorrow, so I'll have to wait til later in the week to bake. Anticipation is a fine sauce!
  6. Thank you! I'll look for the Progresso soups. Someday I'll make a batch of cream of 'shroom soup and freeze some. Someday... BTW, the link that was posted went to the General Mills site. I also found a recipe for Peppermint Patty Brownies that I need to make. Just need an occasion!
  7. TJ's rice pasta is pretty good, and can't beat the price. My trick to making rice pasta edible is to UNDERCOOK IT. Seriously, I cook it for 5 minutes, then run cold water over it while it's in the colander. Reheat briefly in the microwave with a damp paper towel over it, and it is pretty tasty, with a decent consistency. I used it in a casserole yesterday...
  8. Campbell's cream of mushroom or whatever soups have been a staple for casseroles in my kitchen. Not any more, as they contain wheat. Heck. So, any suggestions for something similar that is gluten free? Thanks!
  9. This is excellent news! Thank you for posting. I'll have to keep BJ's in mind, next time we want to go out for a meal. Very nice that they offer gluten-free beer, to go with the gluten-free pizza. Hope that trend catches on. I don't drink often, but pizza and beer, well, that's just a perfect combination!
  10. Thank you. Good information. That is an interesting flour mix. I'm using the pretty standard mix of brown rice flour, tapioca starch, potato flour, and played with adding in sorghum, coconut, or garbanzo flour. That's for more of a quick-bread type loaf, which is quite nice in it's way, but not like a yeast bread. I've read good things about teff flour...
  11. Thank you. That's good to know. I cleaned my VitaMix thoroughly, and have had no glutening problems from it. I spoke with the VitaMix people, and am awaiting a response from their chef about using it to make gluten free yeast bread dough. I've used it for other gluten-free baking, but not yeast breads.
  12. That's a very good idea. Do you think a used mixer would be able to be cleaned adequately of gluten remnants?
  13. I've heard that said about hand mixers. Mine is so old it's avocado green. I know it wouldn't survive bread dough. Do you find that gluten-free bread dough is of a consistency that is not knead-able? I looked at a gluten-free cookbook yesterday that had a large chapter on bread making, which discussed this issue. I'd like to make my own yeast breads, but...
  14. Almost all recipes for gluten-free bread that I see start by saying: 'Place ingredients into the bowl of your stand mixer...' I don't have a stand mixer, nor do I have funds to buy one, or a gluten-free bread machine. So. Is it possible to make my own gluten-free yeast bread without such equipment?? I do have a VitaMix, however, if that might help. ...
  15. What is the DAN conference? Good to have my thoughts affirmed, thanks.
  16. I spoke with a representative from Nordic Naturals a couple of days ago, and was told that all their products are gluten free. Good thing, as their fish oil capsules are the only ones I can tolerate. Anyway, FYI.
  17. Thanks, Patti and RiceGuy. I'll look for those products.
  18. I'm looking for a calcium citrate supplement, without magnesium, that is gluten free. I'm not sure how gluten would be included, but would prefer something specifically labeled gluten free. Any suggestions? (I take magnesium separately, as I'm VERY sensitive to it, can't always tolerate it.) Thanks, Beth.
  19. You might want to check alignment, and nerve and blood flow status in your cervical spine. It's possible that mal-alignment while sleeping decreases those vital functions and can cause the symptoms you describe. Allergies which cause congestion of ears, nose and sinuses can also cause similar symptoms because of pressure on the balance centers in the ears...
  20. We returned yesterday from our foray into the wilds of eastern and western Washington state. With a few exceptions, people in restaurants seemed informed about gluten and eating gluten free. I was pleasantly surprised at the effort made, to keep my meals healthy for me. We visited the Great Harvest Bread Co. in Bellingham, WA, where on Wednesdays, they...
  21. I sent an email to Desert Essence, asking about gluten in their products. This is their response: Hello: Thank you for contacting Desert Essence. Our Organics line is 100% gluten free. Thank you, Desert Essence Customer Care P.O. Box 14007 Hauppauge, NY 11788 + Email: CustomerCare@DesertEssence.com
  22. Thank you! This will be very helpful. Their menu looks lovely.
  23. My family and a few friends have slowly gone from shaking their heads in disbelief to trying overly hard to help, to considering possible gluten issues for themselves. I've not pushed, just 'walked my talk', done my thing, and taken care of myself. It's hard not to tell someone "Hey! do something for yourself! Change your eating habits!" But that doesn...
  24. We were out to dinner with friends and some folks visiting from France one night. There was little on the menu that I could eat safely, so decided to go with a crouton-less Caesar salad. I asked about the ingredients in the dressing, but the staff was unclear about my needs. I found myself trying to read the label on a vat of dressing that they brought...
  25. Thank you for your replies. I only have one wood cutting board, but don't use it often. The others are either the thick white plastic sort of boards, or the thin flexible ones. They all have scratches in them. So dishwashering them should be ok, then? I don't know how porous they are. A couple of the flexible ones have not been used much, and probably...
