Bladder irritation from gluten? Heck, I didn't think about that. The other morning I had Bob's Red Mill gluten free Mighty Good Hot Cereal mixed with Bob's Creamy Rice cereal, and chopped walnuts, blueberries, brown sugar and Rice Dream, then had serious bladder spasms most of the rest of the day. My bladder often kicks into overdrive for a couple...

Recently we went with a large group to a Chinese restaurant. I was very leery of eating there, but figured I could always eat later if I felt the risk was too high. On the menu was, I kid you not, "deep fried gluten, tastes like meat". Warning!!! Red flag!!! When I asked the proprietor what on the menu would be safe for me to eat, he smiled...

Another kudos for Udi's bread. Last week we had to travel unexpectedly to SoCal for a funeral. I took about half a loaf of Udi's in my suitcase, found another loaf in a store where we were. That bread held up remarkably well, unrefrigerated for part of the trip, stuffed into a suitcase, carried by car and by air, and I'm finishing it now that we are home...

The Outback in Daly City on Gellert has been a successful dining out experience for me twice. I would feel comfortable eating there again. We had dinner tonight at BJ's at the Tanforan shopping center in Colma? Daly City? Not sure what city it's in! So far so good. My dinner, a stuffed baked potato ordered from their gluten free menu, was quite tasty...

ARCHIVED Is Udi's Bread Always Frozen?
BethM55 replied to Streetlegal's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi, I, too am an Udi's fan, and live in the Bay Area. Where do you buy Udi's? I've found it at Whole Foods in San Mateo, and at Good Health in the Oceana Market in Pacifica. It's so good to have real sandwiches again... -
ARCHIVED I Need Some Help With This One Y'all

Interesting! Maybe that's why I've always preferred amber lenses in my sunglasses. I, too, feel odd, stressed, sometimes dizzy, in big stores with fluorescent lighting and lots of noise. I'll try wearing my sunglasses in those sorts of stores, see if it helps. I have reading lenses in my sunglasses, so that's my excuse, if anyone asks! -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Cafe

I've just started using the Progresso line of gluten free soups and have been very pleased so far. -
Often, I bring a couple of slices of Udi's bread with me when we eat out, so I can join in on the pre-meal bread and butter noshing. Always get to the butter first, though, if it's not the little packaged pats. We went out for dinner to an Italian place in the City with a bunch of people last week. Italian restaurants are scary places for anyone who...

ARCHIVED Kinda Unknown G/f Restaurants California

Carino's restaurants have a gluten free menu. I've not eaten there, but I get their email ads, so checked it out online. -
ARCHIVED Turning Over A New Spatula
BethM55 replied to conniebky's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Lunches on the go for me are usually string cheese and gluten free crackers. Fortunately, I'm can eat dairy. I eat lots of fresh fruits and vegies, and Udi's bread! Can't forget the Udi's bread! (I don't eat a lot of it, it's too expensive, but I rely on it.) Gluten free pasta, cooked al dente. Jennie-O turkey products are gluten free, according to their... -
ARCHIVED Brain Fog And Light Sensitivity.
BethM55 replied to CravenKnight's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It feels like my thought processes are lost in a heavy pea-soup fog, so that the neurons can't find each other to communicate. I get what I call 'noun-phasic', can't find the nouns I need, and the wrong ones come out instead. Input doesn't process well, or very slowly. My brain doesn't know where the rest of my body is, so I am prone to injury if I am not... -

I did not care for the New Grist beer. Found it too light, very insubstantial. The Redbridge is ok, but not a Nutbrown Ale, by any means! Actually, I find that I seem to be losing my taste for beer lately. Sigh. Probably a good thing, in the long run. -
ARCHIVED Betty Crocker To Come Through Again!
BethM55 replied to lovegrov's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thank you! Will this substitution work with chocolate cake mix as well, do you think? This is a nice alternative to that dreaded stick of butter, which has had me shaking my head and putting the cake mixes back into the cupboard. -
Just an FYI: Most 'ginger ale' has no real ginger in it. Look for a brand that does have real ginger in it, for the best results. Reed's Ginger Beer comes to mind. It does NOT contain alcohol!

ARCHIVED Betty Crocker To Come Through Again!

Do you mix in the pumpkin instead of the butter? Or as an additional ingredient. An entire stick of butter seems like a lot of butter. -

ARCHIVED gluten-free Pie Crust?
BethM55 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Has anyone used a good gluten-free pie crust? I haven't tried any yet, so don't have any data to bring in. I'd try making one from scratch, but never managed a really good pie crust with wheat flour. It's a bit daunting to try to make one with gluten-free flours! -
When we visited friends in Bellingham, they took us to a bakery in either Bellingham or Fairfield that thoroughly cleans the bakery, then bakes gluten free breads and other things on Wednesdays. The bread was good, but the scones were wonderful! Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of the bakery, but can ask my friends when I talk to them next.

You probably need to check on their website. If they don't sell in Canada, they might make whatever changes they need to do, to expand their business.

Yes, what Ahorsesoul said! I agree wholeheartedly. We must be our own advocates, praise and purchase when the products we need are made available. I've been able to develop a nice relationship with the owner of the Good Health store in my town, and will continue to buy my gluten-free products from him rather than the big chain grocery store, to show my...

Thank you. I just ordered their sample case (shipping is pretty pricey... but oh, well!). I suspect they aren't in stores in California yet, (at least not within 100 miles of me) but if I like their products, I'll see if I can persuade the owner of my favorite local healthy foods store to order it. He did that with Udi's and now can't keep it in stock,...

Yes and YES to Udi's bread! I asked the owner of my local healthy foods store to stock it, and he did. Others must be buying it too, as he seems to order more each time. I just picked up 4 loaves of the whole grain version to restock my freezer. I also gave in to hunger and temptation and bought the blueberry muffins. I think the lemon muffins are better...

ARCHIVED Junior Mints And Other Suspicious Characters
BethM55 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Apparently, Junior Mints candy are gluten free. Hmmmm. So they claim. Open Original Shared Link Has anyone had problems with the candies that are supposed to be gluten free? I tried some coconut M&M's last weekend. (I had to, I was quite intrigued! They were pretty good!) All M&M's except the crispy ones are supposed to be gluten-free...
