  1. Some of the comments I've read about the toaster bags said that they melted or caught on fire. Has this happened to you? Also that they only work 3 or 4 times before they melt or tear. I'm thinking to make my own out of parchment paper.
  2. I did google 'toaster bags'. Interesting idea. I looked at one link that suggested making your own, using parchment paper folded into a packet. That could work! I'll have to experiment at home, although we have a broiler/toaster/oven, not a regular toaster. Let's see. To pack for the trip: parchment paper, zip top baggies, food basics, paper towels...
  3. I think I need to look again Jules' site. I have a baking 'flour' blend I make, but lemon pie? You definitely got my attention! I'll be able to find what I need at Whole Foods. I just won't look at the prices! I'll ask about time frame, and if there will be time, I'll bake something that doesn't require a mixer, and use aluminum pans, or line their...
  4. Hmmmm, some good ideas there! Last time we stayed with my SIL I didn't get sick, so perhaps her pots and pans are ok. I think they are not Teflon, so probably safer. I do like the paper towels ideas. I may add that to the stuff I need to bring with or buy there. Thanks for your advice!
  5. Good idea to bring a flexible cutting board. Maybe I'll buy a new one and leave it as a little gift when we go home. And maybe I'll bring a box of zip top bags, too. I'm not super sensitive, but I'm worried that constant low levels of CC will build up. We don't keep a gluten free kitchen at home, but it's just the two of us, so it's not hard to keep myself...

    ARCHIVED Fever

I used to run low grade fevers often, for days at a time. Even kept a log once, showed it to the doctor, and he said, basically, ok, that's interesting. (grrrrr!) This was many years pre-gluten free, and I considered it part of fibromyalgia. Now, after being gluten free for several years, I still run low grade fevers (mid to high 99's, low 100's) if...
  7. My spouse and I are flying to visit her family for Thanksgiving, will be staying with her sister and her husband, and having the feast at her father's house. I've already requested that the turkey NOT be stuffed, but really don't want to inconvenience everyone for my needs. We see this side of the family about once a year. I'm not super sensitive...
  8. I know I've seen a list on Safeways's website for gluten free foods that they offer, but I can't find it now. The most current post I've found here is from 2008, which is not current enough. Does anyone know how to find that list? Or if it still exists? Thank you!
  9. I agree, this is not at all a silly question. I am gluten intolerant, self diagnosed, never been tested except by eliminating gluten from my diet. My symptoms vary from uncomfortable to miserable, and don't start for 12 to 24 hours later, which can make figuring what the heck I ate, very difficult. Eating gluten triggers reflux and my fibromyalgia symptoms...
  10. I am so HAPPY!! A new restaurant will open soon, 10 minutes from my house, and will include a gluten free menu!! They recently published their bread/roll recipe. I haven't tried it yet, but if you want to see it, here is the link: Open Original Shared Link The video indicates that this restaurant is gluten free savvy. If they really are, I will...
  11. I've used the Pacific cream of soups and found them acceptable. They are very salty, however, so I've had to adjust for that. They have nicer ingredients in general than Campbell's, more food, fewer chemicals. I'd love to find gluten free egg noodles for casseroles. Has anyone found such a thing?
  12. I bought a gluten free apple pie from Whole Foods once that was insanely wonderful. Also, check Mariposa Gluten Free Bakery, in Oakland California. I don't know if they make apple pies, but everything I've tried of theirs is delicious, and they do ship their products. Good luck!
  13. I recently downloaded an app to my DroidX phone, called Find Me Gluten Free. It was free to download. It'll find places that offer gluten free menus or products for you. We'll be out and about this weekend, so I plan to make good use of it then.
  14. Something is going on, definitely. Gall bladder maybe? Have you eaten more fats and oils recently? If it doesn't ease up, seems like you should talk to your doc about it. Don't assume it's gluten related, as it may or may not be. I hope you feel better quickly and find the cause for your pain.
  15. Thank you. I think I'm reacting a bit now, hoping it will continue to be mild. I'll not eat gluten knowingly, trust me! Nothing tastes good enough to go back to feeling like I did before I began the gluten free journey. There are too many wonderful gluten free things to eat! But accidents and CC happen, don't they.
  16. Yesterday I was surprised by a lunch meeting at work. The boss brought in boxed salads made at a local market. I chose a chinese chicken salad, which included rice noodles. I didn't notice the teryaki chicken listed in the ingredients until after I ate. OOPS. (I'm usually fanatical about reading lables, was a little rattled about the surprise meeting...
  17. Thank you so much! I just downloaded the app. I'm fairly new with having a smart phone (DroidX), so still learning how to use it and all the wonderful things it can do for me. This will be VERY useful.
  18. Just FYI: I asked, they answered. July 20, 2011 Thank you for contacting Good Earth Teas. All of our teas are gluten-free as well as free from containing MSG, sugar, preservatives or sweeteners, either natural or artificial. Any perceived sweetness in the tea is due to the combination of herbs, spices and citrus components in the blends...
  19. Thank you all for sharing your joy and gratitude! I am grateful for: my new 4 day work week! woo hoo! all the wonderful food that I CAN eat, and the gluten free options that are so readily available these days, for the glutenized foods I miss. (altho mostly I don't miss them so much anymore, surprisingly) my supportive, loving family--...
  20. Well done, I love your attitude! I've brought gluten free brownies made from a Trader Joe's mix, to parties, and they disappear faster than the wheat based brownies. Yes, gluten free can taste great!
  21. Thanks for the moral support! And yes, when I referred to "the code", it's sort of like honor among thieves, or at least among gluten free folk. I do like the idea of the secret hand shake, though, with the dusting off of hands. I appreciate having a place to vent my frustrations, among people who understand!
  22. At at party at a friend's house last night, among people I don't know well, the subject of eating gluten free came up. I don't know why, might have been my explanation of why I really couldn't eat much of the available snacks and why was I asking about ingredients? Innocent enough, right? No one gave me a hard time, but a couple of people proclaimed their...
  23. Cinnamon rolls to die for. Gluten free! And crostini toast-letts, crispy, savory, yummmm... That is all I've tried from this bakery, but if all their goods are this delicious, it's probably a good thing for my diet that they are across the Bay in Oakland. They do ship, though. The cinnamon roll was tender and gooey and sweet... I may have to order...
  24. Whole Foods frozen gluten free pizza crust is quite good, although it is also quite expensive.
  25. I buy most of our nuts and seeds at Trader Joe's. The ingredients on the bag of dry roasted and unsalted almonds is..... Almonds. I've never had a problem eating these or the cashews, or the sunflower seeds. I've bought the pepitas (pumpkin seeds) too. Simpler is better, I think.
