  1. I had bipolar illness caused by celiac. There are also studies on gluten-triggered schzophenia. The schizophrenics were not celiac, only gluten intolerant. Do NOT let anyone tell you that serious mental illnesses cannot be caused by gluten.

    ARCHIVED Restaurants

You eat every single meal in your kitchen. You only eat sometimes in a restaurant.
  3. Sorry you're sick. Unfortunately if you're one of those who can't tolerate oats there is a reasonable chance they will damage your intestines the same as gluten would. You need to avoid them as a gluten grain. Don't panic about your mistake though. One mistake will not set your healing back very far, and you wouldn't have figured it out without trying...
  4. Nope. Plumping solution is usually just sodium phosphate. Chicken skin is a bad thing to eat if you have amine intolerance though.
  5. As far as I can tell, alcoholic beverages are under the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. Certain non-malted beers, wine coolers, and low-alcohol cooking wines fall under FDA jurisdiction. Beer, wine, spirits, and hard cider would be exempt from FALCPA. FALCPA applies to packaged food, which is regulated under FDA. Meat, poultry, and eggs are...
  6. In the US, FALCPA does not apply to alcoholic beverages. It only applies to FDA-regulated foods. (I'll see your big font and raise you a boldface. Heh!) I doubt there would be soy or dairy in the "natural ingredients" in cider but the best bet is to check with the manufacturer.
  7. If you're thinking of EMPowerPlus I'd highly recommend you speak to someone in their call center. They're not doctors but they help people transition from meds to EMPowerPlus all the time so they have quite a bit of experience. They're really sweet and supportive too and most of the people in the call center are on EMPowerPlus themselves. It can be a bit...
  8. What was the reference range on the TSI? Mylan is fine. You can't skip pills though. You're even supposed to take your thyroid about the same time every day.
  9. It could be caused by gluten or by other food intolerances. Common food intolerances other people on the board have are dairy, corn, and soy.
  10. Which brand of thyroid? A board member found gluten in Paddock. The other brands should be OK, though some people don't tolerate the lactose in Synthroid.
  11. How certain is her celiac diagnosis? Have you checked with the office of the specialist and made sure she needs to keep eating gluten? If she absolutely needs to keep eating gluten, you can explain that the specialist will help write a special note for school so her teachers will understand the diet, but that he needs to see that she is sick to write...
  12. They are foods that people are not commonly allergic to. Lamb is the least common allergy, but turkey allergy is relatively uncommon and it's a lot cheaper if the cost of lamb is an issue. If you suspect fructose intolerance (bloating, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, reflux) you might eat lettuce instead of the pears. Eat only those foods for at least...
  13. Well, it sounds like you and hubs completely understand the testing and are making a very informed decision. I hope the diet helps him! Did you find plenty of gluten-free munchies for him?
  14. I would go GAPS with all the mental symptoms. You probably need to do GAPS introduction which has a really intensive gut-healing phase. Malabsorption and nutrient deficiency can do really bad things to your mind. Full GAPS (what you eventually transition to from GAPS intro) and SCD are pretty much the same. GAPS has more emphasis on bone broth is all...
  15. If you have symptoms that resolve off gluten and villous damage, you are probably celiac. Blood tests are false negative 20% of the time.
  16. I take the will power thing as a compliment. The gluten-free diet is HARD and they are right. I do have good will power. I'm pretty average as far as weight so I haven't had the diet comments. I'd probably say I'd be happy to gain 20 lb and be able to eat bread again.
  17. Yes, I hardly ever drink beer so I didn't think of it but it is on all the tyramine lists. Red wine is really hard on me and fermented things like yogurt, sauerkraut, and miso are a no-go.
  18. You need to learn more about controlling his diabetes. I don't think a sandwich is supposed to be the best lunch for someone with diabetes becasue of the carbs. Gluten-free breads are VERY starchy so they are generally worse for blood sugar than wheat. Have you considered sending him ow-carb gluten-free dinner leftovers and some cut veggies with dip...
  19. Thanks! Sorghum syrup makes sense! I wonder if my local homebrew supply has it. I wonder if there is enough tyramine in homebrew to make me sick? Drat. I'm not used to worrying about stuff other than gluten.
  20. I think this is an extremely important story. The standard advice given to people who are still feeling ill gluten free is "you aren't doing the diet well enough" and I believe it's wrong more often than not. I made that mistake too, assuming my occasional reactions were from gluten CC. It set me back quite a bit figuring out the REAL problem. Like...
  21. Yes, it's most likely from eating a little wheat here and there. Celiac tests are wrong and miss celiac disease about 20% of the time. Trust your reactions and stick to the diet strictly.
  22. I love Larabars. Also most of the Tiger's Milk bars have no gluten ingredients. Last time I looked, the cruch flavor was the only one with gluten.
  23. Wow, this is interesting. What other meds did he ask about? Were any of them psychiatric meds? Or hydrochlorothiazide? Pick his brain and tell us what you learn! I've reacted to wheat all my life so I don't think mine is primarily med-related but I'd sure like to know why I seem to have lost my dairy tolerance.
