  1. I'm a huge fan of the Schar baguettes, but I found that they're best when fresh out of the oven. I generally bake them for 10-12 minutes rather than the suggested 5 so that they get nice and crispy on the outside. I will also use them to make sandwiches I bring for lunch the next day, but I bring all of my ingredients in one container (for the fridge...
  2. Can't speak for any children except myself-- As a baby I would spit up a lot. As a young child, this turned into throwing up more than was probably normal (I couldn't burp without throwing up until I was 6). In elementary school I often had a stomachache after eating lunch. I didn't eat breakfast before school because I never felt well when I ate...
  3. You don't specifically mention what kind of symptoms you had, but if they were gastrointestinal I will *always* suggest that fat is the culprit. You list two fried items plus the mac + cheese with the cheez whiz added, which would be enough to turn a healthy person's guts into a Slip n' Slide. It's also worth noting that processed cheeses tend to have...
  4. I miss Chinese food the most. I've been to PF Chang's twice in the last 5 years, but it's not the most wallet-friendly option (even if it is delicious). Making it on my own never quite tastes the same. I just want some good beef and broccoli, general tso's, sesame chicken, egg rolls, and egg drop soup full of those fried wonton strips. And lo mein! Mmm...
  5. Whenever my colitis is active, eating is usually what sets off a case of the poops. As stupid as it seems, eating food causes peristalsis, and if there's something wrong with your gut that can mean a lot of extra movement. My nutritionist admonished me for not eating in the morning, but sometimes that can be unavoidable if it means a week-long trip...
  6. Open Original Shared Link National Azabu Market I used to shop here a little bit. They were good for items like gluten free pasta or the occasional cookie. You had to be careful because some of the versions of products weren't the "safe" kind you'd get in America or Europe, but were made for Japan. Fbcusa.com - Foreign Buyer's Club They allow you...
  7. Could be gluten. Could be too much fat. Could be too much sugar. Could be too much pie. Could just be a combination of any of the above ... If you're still sick in a few days I would lean on the gluten side of things. I always find that the inflammation lasts a while, whereas eating too much of a good thing will only affect me for a...
  8. I got some of the Aldi gluten-free bread last week. I find that the size of a slice is about 1/3 bigger than Udi's, but the loaf really does only have about 10 slices. I can get Kinnikinnick for $3.89 at a local store, so $3.99 for only 10 slices isn't a great deal. However. I've had some bad luck lately with Udi's and Kinnikinnick and Rudi's....
  9. I bought the maple flavor and finally tried it. I was kind of surprised that it was only 12 grams of sugar for how sweeeeeet it is. But it's fantastic. I bought it when it was so new that Dillons didn't even have a price sticker out. I just knew I wanted it! (And then didn't eat it, of course.)
  10. Thai Kitchen is okay. I prefer the packets to the bowls, and the packets certainly take up less space. Recently I found Gefen's soup noodle cups. I'm not sure about their availability. I saw them on Amazon and on glutenfreepalace.com (in a few flavors). I haven't tried them and I haven't found reviews anywhere. If you can tolerate oatmeal, that...
  11. I would suspect the coffee could still be making you "go." I'm not much of a coffee drinker, but when I'm constipated it usually does the trick.
  12. If dairy (and particularly lactose) is an issue, stadium cheeze is not going to be your friend. Check out the percentages for "processed" American and Velveeta in particular, since those would be closest to any kind of nacho sauce: Open Original Shared Link Fat is another issue. It can upset your ailing tummy as much as any forbidden food. Dairy and...
  13. Bleeding is never normal. I started having blood and was soon diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. I find my colitis symptoms more or less disappeared when I started eating gluten-free (and returned when I ate gluten). I should also point out that red blood can come from just about anywhere in your colon. Darker (black or so) blood usually indicates...
  14. Mayonnaise. (Wheat flour.) Marinara sauce. (Wheat flour.) An organic lollipop. (Listed wheat as an allergen.)
  15. People ask me this occasionally and the answer is always, "No." I have not knowingly ingested gluten in the last 4-5 years. Of course there are plenty of things I would love to eat. Strangely, Pizza Hut pan pizza is near the top of the list, since most gluten-free pizzas are just thin crust. I want that oily, chewy crust that holds up to being reheated...
  16. I'm a pretty regular consumer of Amy's frozen foods. I'm sure one or two have made me sick, but it was because of the fat content and not hidden gluten. Amy's is pretty careful about cleaning their equipment.
  17. I'm sure that some people could be "sensitive" or "less sensitive" or whatever. Think about allergies--if someone is allergic to peanuts then it could mean that they get a little itchy or that they go into anaphylactic shock. Someone with lactose intolerance could throw up or they could get a little gassy. I used to have a certain amount of tolerance...
  18. Back when I ate gluten, I was sick every day. I would wake up, spend a couple of hours in and out of the bathroom, and then move on with my day. That was typical. Post-Gluten, I feel good most days, but my intestinal motility is, as you say, "forked." So I feel fine 5 days out of the week (but start to notice that I'm not "going" very regularly) and...
  19. I got a Kitchenaid last Christmas, and while I don't use it all the time, it's been great for those times when I want to bake something and don't want to stand there pounding batter with a spatula (what I used to do). I suppose a hand mixer and a deep enough bowl would give the same results. I just never had good luck with hand mixers. I've never used...
  20. As far as I know, starch doesn't have the protein in it (so, wheat starch wouldn't contain wheat protein). But there's a significant risk of cross-contamination regardless.
  21. My celiac co-existed with my colitis, and eventually I discovered that gluten was the primary source of my bleeding. My main problems were diarrhea, heartburn/reflux, really strange stomach spasms (which set off diarrhea), pain, bloating, vomiting**, fatigue, and little cracks at the corners of my mouth that were, I was told, caused by a B-vitamin deficiency...
  22. Pretty normal. Sort of normal. Let's talk fiber first, because that's part of the issue here. Fiber is hard to digest. If there's going to be something left in your stool, it's going to be the leafy greens. I once bought something called "nira" thinking that it was a totally different vegetable. I sauteed it with some meat and pooped out green worms...
  23. Go KFC-style and stick your sandwich between two slabs of meat Turn your sandwich into a salad Turn your sandwich into a rice bowl
  24. If you have any inflammation in your gut, whether from celiac or IBD or anything else, no, NSAIDs aren't the best thing to take. Once or twice a month for the odd headache is probably fine, but if you have to take it regularly I would try to get on something else for pain. Though, a doctor gave me an alternative medication, saying it wasn't a narcotic...
