  1. Fat is difficult for the body to process, and an inflamed gut is going to have even more difficulty. I see a lot of folks blame gluten for bad GI symptoms after they went to a restaurant where they consumed a large quantity of high-fat food. Fatty food is delicious, yes, but it doesn't need to contain gluten to make you sick. Personally, I also get...
  2. Milk doesn't contain gluten, but some people have difficulty with casein in the same way they have difficulty with gluten. As I understand it, casein is (as a protein) similar enough to gluten that if your body decides it doesn't like gluten it can also get confused and decide it hates casein as well. Inflammation in the gut can also create a sort of...
  3. I barely ever eat out. So there's that ... I do go to Chipotle quite a bit (once a week = quite a bit). I always figure the chance of cc from having my bowl on the same surface as someone's tortilla wrapper isn't that great, but if I see Skippy playing with the tortillas (whyyyyy do they do that? PLAY WITH THE CORN TORTILLAS--THEY'RE JUST AS FUN) I...
  4. But paying double the price for gluten free biscuits (in the American sense or not) makes life feel a little more normal. The worst thing for me is not feeling normal. I don't mind jokes about gluten, but it needs to be clear that I'm being laughed WITH and not AT. Being laughed at is like making fun of the kid with the leg braces, except that everyone...
  5. I started having digestive problems when I was about 10 or 11, and when I was 16 I quit drinking soda and found that it helped a bit. The carbonation was aggravating my guts. So if it were me, I would be blaming the soda. That stuff's no good, and it has nothing to do with gluten. Then there's also the sugar, as someone mentioned. Bad bacteria in...
  6. I've heard the whey thing (thanks, Mom), and had a classmate gasp in horror when I ate a Snickers bar. When I was in Japan, the M&Ms did contain wheat starch. That was annoying. The gluten line I'm most tired of is: "What are you eating?" "Cupcake." "You mean, a gluten free cupcake?" "... yes." If I'm eating it and it's a...
  7. I bought the deluxe macaroni and cheese, and here were my thoughts: The pasta is either Tinkyada or an exact replica. The ingredients are exactly the same and the shape (the ridges in the elbows) is the same. You have to be careful if you're like me and prefer to halve the box (half now, half later), since the pasta expands to about twice its size....
  8. Lupus could certainly do that to you, and I guess if you're also celiac it's hard to know if your lupus affected your GI tract or if it it was just the celiac. Inflammation in your guts, regardless of the source, can make it hard to absorb the proper nutrients from your food, and that can also make you tired. I personally have a terrible time getting enough...
  9. I dealt with lazy/ignorant gastros for the last few years who all thought I was making stuff up when I said that gluten set off my ulcerative colitis and made me bleed. (Because I want to take up an expensive and inconvenient diet just for funsies?) I moved back to where the original gastro who dxed me is, and told him what happened when I ate gluten...
  10. I've read that sugar can upset your digestive system because certain bacteria feed off of it and then flourish (in a bad way). All I know is that I rapidly gain weight if I so much as *look* at sugar. One Vitamin Water 3x in a week was enough to make me gain 5 pounds in said week with no other dietary changes. I now try to limit my sugar intake. YMMV...
  11. If you're gluten-free, coming to Japan is probably a bad idea. They stick wheat flour and barley in everything, rice is often extended with barley, food doesn't have to show all the ingredients, allergens are generally not listed, and so on. And there is very little exposure as far as gluten. You basically have to tell everyone you have a wheat allergy...
