The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
love2travel replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I made some delicious roasted corn chowder, roasted broccoli with sesame oil and nigella seeds and Bananas Foster for dessert. -
Chicken stock (homemade) is the best! I also add a splash of white wine.

ARCHIVED Found Glutino's Genius Bread In Canada Today!
love2travel replied to love2travel's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I really hope you can find it. While it is not the same as gluten bread, it is the best there is available commercially in my opinion. It is also cheaper than Udi's. It is $4.99 here and Udi's is $7.49. Not Spruce Grove but good guess! I live further away than that but we try to get to Edmonton once a month to eat out at a great place and get a few... -

Aw, shoot. I was so hoping you would not have a reaction! But I appreciate how you have chosen to learn from this experience. Learning to say "no" is not easy for many of us but I have had a lot of practice with that this year! -
ARCHIVED Cold Weather Makes Me Hungry...
love2travel replied to pricklypear1971's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Our winters are extremely long. We usually have snow on the ground 5-6 months and it is certainly not uncommon to have many, many days of -32F (and much colder). Don't even talk about the awful winds! The coldest I have been in was -65F. NOT GOOD. With cold weather I am in the kitchen even more than usual. We grill regularly in the summer... -

I have only seen tiny improvements in my health (i.e. strong tooth enamel, strong fingernails) as well so I can understand. I have been gluten free almost exactly the same length of time as you! But I did not feel ill from gluten to begin with. However, I sure do wish my chronic pain and insomnia would hurry up and improve! But I am one of those who... -

A lot of infusing goes on at our house! Lots of oils. I also like infusing honey with ground dried chipotle and other delicious things. You're right - it is a very simple way to add WOW to things. -
ARCHIVED Found Glutino's Genius Bread In Canada Today!
love2travel replied to love2travel's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Oh, too bad. I am still shocked that we have it here. Canada usually seems so far behind the US in gluten-free products. After my UDi's bread is gone I will only get Genius. Sure, I like to make my own bread, but sometimes it is so convenient to buy it. -
ARCHIVED Found Glutino's Genius Bread In Canada Today!

I buy it from our Super Store (not giving away the town I live in) but I would be shocked if you do not have it in Edmonton. Have you tried Ed's Gluten Free store? They have a lot of great stuff. It is also in our Nutter's (20% off everything in the store the first Tuesday of the month so I stocked up on about 12 flours yesterday). Do you have Nutter... -

From the roast chicken last night I made chicken salad sandwiches to go with yummy homemade roast tomato soup. Yogurt with bee pollen again. -
Sylvia is right - definitely no need for gums in gravy. Like already suggested, I use cornstarch or millet or sorghum for gravy. We rarely make it because I like to deglaze with wine and make a jus or glaze instead as I did last night with our roast chicken. You certainly need not be deprived of great gravy!

ARCHIVED How To Get Back On The Horse?
love2travel replied to zoogirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Same here. It's tricky for me in ways because I didn't feel ill eating gluten. That is one reason I am so very strict because I cannot tell whether I have been glutened. In the eight months I have been gluten free I have not given in to my temptations for another reason - I, too, am a visual person and visualize my once-flat villi standing up straight... -
ARCHIVED Holiday Party At Work Today
love2travel replied to Marilyn R's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That is exactly how I feel. I just do not attend potential problem events and do not feel that I must justify myself, either. I used to gush and explain but those days are now gone and I feel good about that. -

Thank you for the awesome information! I am saving this for our next trip which we have booked for May. There is a great store with lots of Schar stuff on our way to Croatia in Slovenia. -

ARCHIVED Holiday Party At Work Today
love2travel replied to Marilyn R's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Marilyn, what an uncomfortable situation! I soooooo hope you will be 100%. It is a good reminder to us all, especially with Christmas parties and such. My husband's party is a huge event with great catered food (tux and gown affair). However, very little is safe for me so I am not going. The chance of cross contamination with 200 people is just too great... -

Sounds like you had a wonderful leftovers night! The fact that we can still have good homemade pizza is enough to make me tear up. Your pizza toppings combo sounds fantastic. -

You're funny. I've never tried a gluten-free hotdog. Can you describe it? I haven't had a gluten hotdog for years, either. We don't do them well in our area. We do smokies well but not hotdogs. You've given me an idea for dinner tomorrow - gluten-free bratwurst sausage with roasted purple grapes (too bad we don't have Concord). The grapes caramelize... -

It was yummy - the chicken had a happy life as it was free range with lots of room to peck at insects in the grass. We all fought over the skin. It was a plump bird with gorgeous yellow fat. The carcass will make great soup for lunch tomorrow. I've considered doing a blog. Perhaps it would make a great winter project! Thanks for saying so. -
ARCHIVED Did Your Partner Support You ..........
love2travel replied to lucylooo's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Irish and I are married to brothers. Well, not really, but my husband has had to come home from work many times to walk me to the bathroom (this is chronic pain stuff, not just celiac stuff). He had to work 100-hour weeks (the nature of the work), come home, cook, clean, etc. for three years. I cannot recall his ever complaining about it. Now I manage... -
ARCHIVED Just Diagnosed And Feel Like Its The End Of The World!
love2travel replied to ScarlettsMommy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I understand your frustration. Most seem to go through several phases: I went through shock (I was not sick), then anger followed by grief. That was eight months ago. At that time I did not think I would ever be able to say this but it is not nearly as difficult as it was. I find it easy to be gluten free at home. Eating out is different except for... -
ARCHIVED First Time On Plane Celiac

On my first trip gluten free to Europe I tried Schar products and gagged on the so-called bread. It was so horrible! No problems - the flavour and texture were unforgettably bad but now I am rather spoiled by Glutino's Genius bread (or my homemade bread). However, I do rather like their hard crunchy bread sticks. Are there other Schar products you can... -
