  1. When I saw those four seats in a row my heart was beating so rapidly - I had to wait until we were in the air until I moved. It was absolutely amazing. A miracle, really. Usually when I fly I am in so much pain from sitting that it takes several days of agony to get beyond it. Not this time! Hopefully you can make it to Croatia some day. I realize...
  2. Thank you! We were SO lucky getting those seats - I've flown a lot and have never seen that happen on long-haul flights. We've been to Croatia many times but our house is in Istria (the north) but I have been all over the country. Dubrovnik is stunning, isn't it? Where did you live in Italy? I've been there probably at least ten times - my favourite...
  3. Would there be any way of living there not as a permanent resident but for a few months of the year? Man, health care systems can be deplorable. You sound like me having a difficult time returning home. Actually, when I say "home" I mean Croatia so I usually say returning to Canada. Australia really sounds like an excellent place to be in so many...
  4. I know - it can be annoying and frustrating at times. And some servers are excellent at making me feel "normal" by discreetly offering house-made gluten-free breads for bread service, for example, without drawing unnecessary attention. Others make such a big deal out of it which attracts attention I do NOT want.
  5. So glad to hear from you! And extra glad that you had such a great time in Australia. Australia is far ahead of Croatia with celiac BUT Croatia is better than many. I did not get the eye-rolling-hands-on-the-hips thing there, nor did I get unwanted pity. My celiac card did not come as a surprise to anyone there. It was just so normal. Wow - how amazing...
  6. I am imagining it right now! This is what would happen - you stand and ring the bell thingy and I would nonchalantly walk to the gate to see who it was. There I would see a rooster standing on the gate with a squirrel perched on top (to reach the bell thingy). Then I would be SURE to recognize you. But then maybe a snake or scorpion would come along and...
  7. In each country we visit (we've been to about 20) we make sure to try as many authentically local things as we can including blood pudding, brains, sweetbreads, Prairie oysters, etc. So far the only thing I do not want to eat again is cottage cheese except for the fresh sheep cottage cheese in Croatia. Oh, and some types of raw shellfish. LOVE beef...
  8. Like you, I am a culinary daredevil and would try nearly everything once except maggot cheese from Italy and animal eyeballs (i.e. in Syria). I've tried so many interesting things that many people have not even heard of. Had cuttlefish (like squid) ink in risotto several times (twice a couple of weeks ago in Croatia) and LOVE it so much. Head cheese is...
  9. Oh, you two! Too funny. Actually, if you are extra nice we may even let you stay there! We do let my relatives from Germany vacation there (and I have only met them once). Maybe if you beg and plead and bring the squirrel and rooster...I am laughing out loud at your hilarity! That is just brilliant.
  10. Yes, we do; at least live there about nine months of the year and three here as we have family here. In the meantime I am trying to learn the VERY difficult language - it will take many years and I know I will never speak it - there are too many difficult letters to pronounce. But I would love to be able to understand and read it. My energy level (even...
  11. There are no adequate words to describe my passion for the place. It is surreal and sublime and simply incredible. Not just the house - the whole region. It just feels like that is where I belong and where my heart is. I am literally at a loss for words...
  12. I have tried some antihistamines but not Vistaril specifically. Get this - I slept wonderfully well most nights in Istria. True, people tend to sleep better on vacation, but there is something about the sea air and humidity. Well, I'm guessing all that walking helped, too. My skin felt so much better there as well. I do have a prescription for insomnia...
  13. Man - it is sure wonderful to hear that you were thinking of me. Thanks lots! I absolutely refuse to allow my pain and celiac prevent me from doing what I am passionate about. This trip has proved once again that people CAN continue to travel and enjoy life in spite of illnesses. It was a great lesson to learn.
  14. Thanks! That is very sweet. I will be sure to do some posting!
  15. I love Dubrovnik and Plitvice Lakes and am glad you experienced them! I'm a sucker for Istria as it is known for its food and salt-of-the-earth people and about 873,902,741 other reasons.
  16. They are more aware than here in Canada, too. However, it is not just that - the availability of fresh local ingredients nearly year-round really makes a dramatic difference! So many konobas (a type of local restaurant) grow their own herbs, make their own wines, do their own fishing and/or hunting and/or raising livestock, have chickens/eggs, forage for...
  17. Good luck with that!
  18. Sure - will do that...
  19. Am trying the Melatonin 10 mg and nothing. Nil. Zip. Zilch. However, my insomnia is the worst all my doctors have ever seen. I can go several days without even falling asleep, sadly...
  20. Duh - can I use fibro and/or celiac fog as my excuse for this one? Our house is in rural Istria near the sea. Croatian neighbours have one key and we have the other here with us AT ALL TIMES! Hee hee...
  21. We life in northern Alberta so it is a 3-hour drive to the airport, then a 4-hour flight to Toronto, Toronto to Frankfurt, Frankfurt to Venice and a 3-hour-drive from Venice to our Croatia house. WHEW! Of course that time includes layovers (not long).
  22. The only reason I was tested for Celiac is that a sister of mine is gluten intolerant so I requested the bloodwork. I was SHOCKED to find I indeed had the disease and requested the biopsy, too, as I could not (or would not) believe it. I had no symptoms which makes it very tough to tell whether I have been glutened or not. Don't get me wrong - I have a...
  23. I had both the colonoscopy and gastroscopy done and am glad I did. My doctor told me I had celiac due to my positive bloodwork but at that time I had no idea that was all I needed. I wanted scopes done to prove I did it either way because I was asymptomatic and just could not wrap my mind around not eating gluten-containing foods (I teach culinary classes...
  24. We travel all over Europe and have just returned home from Croatia and Italy. As I am trying to learn both languages I know the words to look out for - whenever we travel I just type myself a list of the words (i.e. gluten free, no/without gluten, wheat, barley, oats, rye, lactose and so on) with translations and take it with me when shopping. Sometimes...
  25. Although I love murder mysteries, I dislike being a detective when it comes to eating out. I have yet to attend a social function such as a church potluck or wedding since my diagnosis this year. My husband and I get invited out less often; in fact, rarely. I do not like drawing attention to myself in restaurants when questioning the server and/or...
