  1. Well now I'm thinking it must be lactose. Because not too long before I was diagnosed I went to a local diner and had a tuna melt on lovely crusty grilled bread, AND a large milkshake. I was SO sick that evening but just thought it was some stomach thing. Well, lol... I guess it was a stomach "thing", just not the thing I thought it was. This one was caused...
  2. Ack! Don't tell me that! I guess I'll add that to the experiment. sigh....
  3. Interesting! I never knew that about cheese vs. milk and lactose. That would explain it, wouldn't it? lol... I guess I'll do an experiment, using lactose-free milk and ice cream and see how I feel. During these past few weeks when I've been so careful about gluten I have been having a bowl of cereal (yay for Chex!) in the morning at least three times...
  4. So here's a question for all you more experienced folks, about dairy. In my post about fasting I mentioned that I feel really great today (just hungry, lol). No intestinal "rumbling", etc. Since I thought I'd been pretty careful about gluten I'm wondering now about dairy, since I've seen lots of posts here about how it often goes along with celiac. Last...
  5. I agree, I had the same worries about anything coming from Dunkin' Donuts considering how much flour has to be flying around that place! However, I've not had any problems with their coffee. I switched to DD from Starbucks a while ago because of cost. But haven't had any cc problems. Of course each one could be different, depending on the manager and who...
  6. I'm Presbyterian. And I'm not the head pastor, just the assistant. Although the pastor is VERY supportive and will do whatever we need to do. Since I've just been diagnosed not too long ago I haven't really figured it all out yet. Eventually I might bake some bread. But I have to confess that I hate to cook, and baking seems even harder, and I've never...
  7. So tomorrow is the dreaded colonoscopy (well, I'm not dreading the actual procedure as much as the prep.... gag) -- anyway, I'm supposed to have a "clear diet" for today. Well, I ran to the grocery store on the way to work this morning to buy some lemon jello, the kind already made up in the containers. Wouldn't you know, they had only grape and cherry...
  8. Yep, this is exactly what I'm going to start doing. The ladies will have to get over their old-fashioned ideas about "the pastor". lol... Either in the baking forum here, or a link that was posted there, I found a recipe for a wonderful-sounding chocolate torte/pie kind of thing. I'm going to make that for the next time we have a potluck. I'll just have...
  9. I'll second (third, fourth, hundredth?) the social aspect of celiac. For me, being in the church "business", I have an unending string of potlucks, ladies' teas, women's groups, denominational meetings, classes.... you name it, and they all come with food. Right now at my church we're doing a summer preaching/teaching series on the meaning of the Lord's...
  10. Good tips! I LOVE cheesecake, and we all love pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving.
  11. Good tips Takala. Thanks! I'm leaving shortly to go look at new stoves, so hopefully by next week I'll have a working oven.
  12. Northern Virginia here and I can't find it. I've searched on line, and even looked on Amazon. Nothing.
  13. This sounds very yummy! Making a copy of it now for my file. Thanks.
  14. Just having my morning toast now. Butter, raspberry jam... nice cup of coffee. omg.....     Sorry, I don't mean to be repeating old news. But I am SO happy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  15. Hmmm.... I'll have to look in the regular bread section next time, maybe they'll have other Udi's stuff. And, my English muffins are Food of Life. They were next to the Udi's bread so I thought I'd try them. Anyone ever had these? The package is very heavy so I'm expecting something awful like that TJ rice bread. But we'll see... if they're too...
  16. Yes, the first ingredient was barley. And yes, they were those Newman's Own. BIG letters that said Wheat-Free/Dairy Free, which confused me since I was in the gluten-free area of the shelf. So I guess there are people who are allergic/intolerant to specifically wheat? That would certainly be easier to deal with than gluten. (still a pain, given what wheat...
  17. For whoever said they did a quick pass through Whole Foods and didn't see Udi's... (I forgot to check the name on the post before I clicked "reply") -- it's in the frozen food section, not on the shelves. Try that, and if they don't have it at all you should ask them to get some, especially since it sounds like most other Whole Foods carry it.
  18. My Whole Foods only had white and whole "wheat" (not sure what they called that one since obviously it's not wheat, but you know what I mean) -- anyway, I bought the white because I've seen everyone here saying that's very good. Maybe someone else can speak to the other one. I also bought some English muffins, but I'm not sure now if they were Udi's (I...
  19. So, I was in the "natural foods" section of my grocery store which is where most of the specialty gluten-free stuff is. Along with all the organic and other "health food" type stuff. I'm going down the shelf and saw the cookies. Passed up a few because they weren't my favorite flavors ever before celiac (ginger snaps, peanut butter, etc.) Then I saw some...
  20. Sounds good! Adding this to my list of possible recipes. Me, who hates to cook and bake. lol.. I'm just recently diagnosed so I think I'll be getting over my fear of baking, at least. I'm buying a new stove/oven tomorrow so once I get an oven with good temperature control I'll be trying some of the recipes you all have posted here.
  21. Udi's woot!!!!!!!!!! I'm writing a letter to the company as soon as I post this. Finally managed to get myself to Whole Foods yesterday. Can you tell I'm happy? lol.. I had two pieces for breakfast this morning and they tasted like real bread!! (unlike the gaggy stuff I bought at Trader Joe's.) woot!
  22. Yes! I agree. I never really ate a ton of junk food, but any time desserts were around -- like at church potlucks, etc. -- I'd eat some. I often bought a donut at the bakery section of my grocery store. And I love butter on bread. I can't eat any of that now so right there are a lot of unhealthy calories taken out of my diet. We're eating "plainer" ...
  23. Coincidence that you should post this just today (well, yesterday I guess, since I'm writing this on Monday morning). I had the same problem yesterday in church, the first communion Sunday that I've been in church since I was diagnosed. I'm Presbyterian so we have communion once per month and I've missed the last two because of vacation and travel. Anyway...
  24. Just got back to this thread... and sheesh! That "sheesh" is for your MIL, and all the other toxic people in our lives.
  25. I didn't want to hijack that other thread (about the problem with MIL) -- but Magpie said that her MIL had been caught rubbing seafood on her plate at a restaurant. sheesh... because she thought Magpie was ruining her evening out. Um... I'm trying to figure out how not eating seafood would "ruin" MIL's meal? Can't each person eat whatever they want? If...
