  1. And -- if you can eat peanut butter, and if you like the combination of pb and chocolate, then try a pb and nutella sandwich. omg... AND, add some sliced banana to it. {thud} <--------- me fainting from the yumminess!
  2. This line from the article is pretty funny: "But she said it can be a challenge to eat nutritionally sound without gluten..." Um... I'd say not. I'd say it's very easy to "eat nutritionally sound." (assuming no other allergies) -- meat, beans, dairy, vegetables, fruit, rice, quinoa.... how hard is that? lol.. No, in my opinion the challenging part...
  3. I just googled it and it looks like "pregelatinized starch" just refers to any starch that's not "gelatinized". (lol.. oh so helpful, right?) -- but, I'd say that yes, "pregelatinized starch" could have gluten since it could be made from wheat. However, if the label says "gluten free" then it can't be wheat. It would have to be from something else -- potato...
  4. And I have no objection to ads at all, especially on boards like this where I want to learn about as many gluten-free products and information as I can. I was just asking why I suddenly was seeing duplicate ads -- i.e., the exact same ads on the left as on the right. But, it doesn't matter now, I solved it with my trusty ad-blocker. I can still open the...
  5. Potlucks, the minefield of celiac! I've been to plenty of them at my church since I was diagnosed but those are easier in the sense that there are enough people there that it's not obvious about what I'm eating. I always make sure to bring something I can eat, something substantial -- main course, salad, etc. So that's not a problem. But.... haven't...
  6. Definitely we can have problems with dairy. Lactose specifically. The way someone explained it to me is that the part that digests -- or breaks down -- the lactose is on the tips of the little villi things in our intestines. But the villi are what is damaged by the gluten. So if you have a lot of damage you can't digest lactose. Often you'll be able to go...
  7. I'm very sorry to hear this. When you start to get sick of the frosting switch to Snickers.
  8. What's that supposed to mean? No need to be snarky, I was just asking why I'm seeing duplicate ads. If the answer is that you need more ads in order to pay for the board then just say so. Because if that's the answer I would have expected to see more *different* ads, not complete duplicates.
  9. So suddenly this morning I'm seeing the same ad on both sides of this message box, which is causing the message to be squished into a small space (I'm on a laptop). It's annoying because I have to scroll down so much to read all the messages in a thread. Also, it's annoying to see duplicate ads! lol...
  10. I am lactose intolerant, at least for now. I'm hoping I might be able to go back to it after my intestines heal. I can eat yogurt and hard cheese, thankfully! Could you try some different yogurt? Not cow's milk, I mean. Also, for now the answer may be calcium supplements. When my dd was little I always gave them to her (after asking the doctor) because...
  11. Yes to what everyone else said. Snickers bars. Utz's potato chips. (and probably other brands too) Snickers bars. Doritos. Snickers bars. Salsa, other dips. Snickers bars. Fritos. Oh, did I mention Snickers bars? Also, not sure if anyone mentioned the Dinty Moore (I think that's the brand) of canned beef...
  12. Yes to what everyone said. The only thing I have to disagree with is what SGWhiskers said about the cinnamon sugar donuts. Go for the chocolate ones. (just call me Ms. Chocoholic)...
  13. Good to know! I never knew about this. I've just added it to my grocery list for tomorrow.
  14. Thanks everyone! I will post the results. Yah, I forgot that I could make "buttermilk" by adding vinegar to regular milk. Well.. I think I'll try with store-bought buttermilk only because it's too hot to turn the oven on today anyway. It's not quite hot enough for the AC but hot enough that I have no desire to turn on an oven.
  15. It's called "The Gluten-Free Kitchen" by Roben Ryberg. All the baking recipes in there use only corn starch and potato starch. She did that because those two are more readily available and not expensive. I'm going to try her buttermilk bread which she calls "soft with real bread structure". We'll see... I'm a skeptic since I've found NOTHING yet that...
  16. Don't forget to add my personal favorite healthy food, Snickers, to the list. But yes, I think it does make it more difficult for people with celiac or those with a real intolerance when others are only doing it as a "fad" or just as another "diet". I have a friend who started gluten-free after I told her about me. She gets headaches like the ones...
  17.    (gluten-free cake mix, chocolate, with chocolate icing)
  18. I don't know how it happens. I mean, I don't know the science of this disease. But that's what happened to me. I was fine my entire life. I never even had any intestinal type problems, except once in awhile -- I mean very rarely. Then suddenly boom -- stomach/intestinal pain, diarrhea, gas.. the whole thing. Overnight. In fact, I remember I had just some...
  19. Lol... and yes! I love my coffee.
  20. Omg, how awful! I hope all that is the worst that you ever get, and from here on out it gets only better.
  21. Thanks Peter. Very interesting. Still seems a bit funny to me though, to tell people that something called "peanut butter" actually contains "peanuts". Or that "milk" contains "milk".
  22. So, having suddenly become pretty good at reading labels I've noticed something. On my peanut butter -- which says on the front label in big letters "PEANUT BUTTER" -- it says (after the list of ingredients, which is "peanuts, water, salt") "contains: peanuts." Um... you think? Peanut butter contains peanuts? who would have thought? -- Or, my milk...
  23. Okay... so I've never gotten headaches. Occasionally maybe from too much sun, or not enough sleep. But just ordinary ones. My symptoms that led me to the doctor and to the celiac diagnosis were the usual intestinal ones. Now I'm gluten-free. More or less. I'm trying, but things keep slipping in, since it hasn't been that long. And over the past several...
  24. I agree with Glutenfreemama.... I buy at the Asian store, and it's not Chinese. I buy from a Thai store, and from an Indian one. (I love living in this area....lots of ethnic stores and restaurants). The price is a HUGE deal for me. And the variety. I remember the first time I went into the Thai store looking for rice noodles for pad thai (this was before...
  25. I love how this thread keeps coming back to the top as someone else discovers or finds Udi's. I just had my peanut butter on toast for breakfast, with a banana and coffee. (the banana on the pb toast, not in my coffee, lol) -- my very favorite breakfast, which I do NOT HAVE TO GIVE UP thanks to Udi's!
