  1. This thread has been so interesting, thanks everyone. I can see I'll be serving grits with dinner at some point. lol.. And interesting how one southerner doesn't do cheese grits, but my south Georgia friend says that's one of the only two "real" ways to eat them (salt and butter being the other one). So grits must be regional. Now I'm psyched to google...
  2. This sounds yummy, minus the jelly. Or, I'd do the jelly minus the other ingredients. lol... Not sure I want savory and sweet in the same bowl. lol... But, I think I'll give the bacon/eggs/grits a try tomorrow.
  3. Well...I'm eating the Quaker 5-minute kind and although it doesn't specifically say gluten-free the ingredients are: "white hominy grits made from corn" and then a list of added vitamins. That's it. And there is no "processed on shared machinery" warning, or anything like that. I haven't had a bit of trouble with them. Not even any vague tummy "rumbling...
  4. Yes, I've tried this also and it's very yummy! But, it's as expensive as the gluten-free oats and also is only available in one store near me. I will continue to buy it but I was also looking for something that was cheap and easy to find. And, on another use for the Bob's cereal -- I recently made meatloaf for the first time since going gluten-free and...
  5. I've just put milk and sugar on my grits and eaten them like a hot cereal! <---- me pretending not to see you all (y'all) who were born in the south. heehee... But seriously -- I've always eaten grits but never as a morning hot cereal. I've been told that the only two "proper" ways to eat grits are with butter and salt, or with cheese. (YUMMY!...
  6. Yes! Hip pain. I thought it was arthritis. I mean, it is arthritis, but I thought it was so bad just because I was unlucky and I'm getting older. But last weekend I suddenly realized that my hip hurt while lying in bed one evening, so much so that I had to constantly try to shift position. Which made me realize that I hadn't had that pain in quite awhile...
  7. Yeah.... I can relate. I've been feeling sorry for myself too. I guess it comes and goes, but at least we can complain to each other.
  8. The pans and bowls sure do clean up easily. Put some water in there and it all just melts away. lol.. Too bad that's the same quality that makes most of the baked goods disintegrate in liquid. Oh well... can't have everything I suppose. (trying to find the silver lining in all this, since I really really REALLY do not like to cook)
  9. Lol... and what does it say about my fast food habits that I knew immediately which was which? At least, prior to celiac. I've only been gluten-free since the summer and I've been afraid to eat any fast food stuff except for french fries from the Wendy's across the street from my church, because I know they have a dedicated fryer for the fries. So when...
  10. Oh yes, we're totally open to all that. It's just that I hate to cook! lol.. And before celiac I had never -- seriously -- baked from scratch. So I'm hopeless in the kitchen. Someone suggested using rice crackers but I was holding out for something more "bread like". It's a work in progress. lol..
  11. Whoppers are made by Burger King, but that ingredients list is for McDonald's. McD's Big Mac sauce does contain gluten, but I don't know about the Whopper sauce. I found nutritional info for the Whopper which says it contains wheat but that could be just for the bun. The ingredients don't actually show a whopper "sauce", just mayo.
  12. I'm gluten-free less than a year and so far I've found it to be pretty hard. We have lots of meals at church -- potlucks or working lunches, etc. -- plus the issue of communion is still unresolved. I go out to breakfast regularly with a friend and that's not working now... I seem to be getting more sensitive to cc the longer I'm gluten free. So yes...
  13. I was also going to suggest making a list of things you can eat for when you get that "big mac attack". And I don't mean apples or bananas. Some of my favorites are: -- Snickers bar -- potato chips -- corn chips and cheese dip -- kinninnick (or however you spell it) chocolate donuts (in the frozen section) -- Betty Crocker chocolate cake with...
  14. Thanks everyone. And thanks for that info Foogirlsmom....very interesting. My dh and I have been talking about painting our living room and dining room so I'll keep all this in mind when we look for paint. I guess in one way then I'm glad I had that problem in church, because otherwise I wouldn't have learned all this and we might have gone ahead and...
  15. So here's an odd question --- or maybe not, since this is all new to me. Before this gluten thing got me I was never overly-sensitive to smells. For example, paint or cleaners -- if it was really strong I might have said "yuck" or maybe gotten a mild headache. But nothing more than that. But, we recently pulled up the rug in our church sanctuary and had...
  16. Congratulations!! Good job!! I went back to school as an adult and that was before my gluten symptoms really started and still found it difficult. So I can't imagine doing it how you did. Woot! (wish I knew how to do that little cheer emoticon...)
  17. I have nothing to add to all the excellent advice already given above, but just wanted to say hang in there. It's not easy, but it does get easier. Just read, read, read those labels! (says I who got glutened by some barley malt just the other day because I didn't read properly... ) Also, keep coming back here to this board because everyone here can...
  18. Well, the barley malt was listed in the ingredients, so it was my own fault. I just read too fast and went directly to the allergen listing, forgetting that even if "wheat" isn't listed there is gluten in other things.
  19. I know I haven't been at this diet for very long but you'd think I would have learned BY NOW to read labels. I mean, I do read them. But not quite enough. Woke up this morning with that awful gluten headache. I couldn't think what I'd had yesterday that could possibly have caused it. Then *bing* light bulb moment -- I asked my dd to bring me the...
  20. Thanks! I got a few other good tips on my way down to #5. lol... (like for instance, I never knew you could buy that cheese stuff in a shaker can.)
  21. You have to ask at each place. My Wendy's has a dedicated fryer for only fries, so they're safe. I eat them all the time and never have trouble.
  22. I live in Arlington, just across the river from DC. You said your hotel is in the mall area, however that's a pretty big area. But if you're near Foggy Bottom (which is the name of the Metro stop there) there's a Trader Joe's close by. Hopefully your hotel will have a small refrigerator and microwave in your room. Also, our mainline grocery stores...
  23. No, I haven't tried Chebe yet. But I just ordered some from Amazon and it should be here this week! I was thinking that some sort of pizza crust might work. It doesn't have to tear because it's just going to be for me.
  24. Yeast that you use for making bread rise is gluten-free. Brewer's yeast is something different -- I think it's like "dead" yeast and has barley in it, or is processed with barley. edited to add that if Marmite is a "godsend for celiacs" then I'm in big trouble. I tried it once and was
  25. No, any bread will do. Leavened, unleavened... flat, not-flat, small rolls, large loaf... we're totally flexible on that.
