  1. Well... I can't say too much about stem-cell replacement but I can speak for chemotherapy. And chemo completely cured my seasonal allergies. Before chemo I had serious pollen/tree/grass allergies in the spring, serious enough to take prescription drugs. Then I had chemo for six months, which totally wiped out my immune system... took it down to zero white...
  2. My immediate thought when I read "soda, should it be eliminated?" was "I HOPE NOT!" Like someone else said, not at all healthy but it sure tastes good on a hot summer day.
  3. -- Soy sauce. Just saying. Oy... But seriously, I have nothing to add to what the others have said. I bought the "Dummies" book on gluten-free living and it's been very helpful. It lays out everything to watch for, and tells you about avoiding certain things in the beginning (like dairy, or oats) which you might be able to add back in later. ...
  4. Yes please, I'd love to have it also.
  5. This is a great thread! I've written down lots of great ideas.
  6. Lots of good ideas here. -- Sunday isn't a typical day for me because I'm at church in the morning then I rush from there to a retirement community near here for Sunday afternoon services. So I do a lot of eating on the run. Breakfast: -- coffee -- banana Snack before morning worship at church: -- apple Coffee hour after worship: ...
  7. Sheesh! Some people have a lot of nerve. I always wonder why they think that what they want is what everyone else must put up with. Especially when it's your health! -- Well, I'm glad that the management was so responsive. If there are any future problems it sounds like they'll be a big help to you. Hope you feel better soon.
  8. If I were you I might give it a try for a short time. Even just a couple of weeks might tell you something. I felt better almost immediately when I went off gluten. To be honest, it isn't really "extremely hard" to follow, especially if you have only gluten issues and not something else on top of it (like soy, dairy, or peanuts, for example). Just eat...
  9. I'm really new to this myself, so I'll tell you what I've done so far. But I'm sure the more experienced people here will have a ton of good ideas. Breakfast: -- cold cereal -- I've had cinnamon chex, or this morning I had rice chex with blueberries (blueberries with cinnamon chex didn't appeal to me, lol). -- yogurt -- usually I'll add some fruit...
  10. I'm sorry that happened to you! It sounds awful! But, thank you for posting, because now I will be sure to NEVER EVER go to Walgreens.
  11. Bri, you are SO right about how our society revolves around food! (I haven't finished reading this thread yet so I apologize if I'm repeating anything others have said -- I started from the bottom and was working up, lol...) -- anyway, I work at a church and you can imagine how that goes. Potlucks, Sunday school breakfasts, treats brought in by the nice...
  12. This is really interesting! The insulin theory makes sense to me. I had mentioned the sudden shaky hunger thing to my doctor once and he said "oh, just eat protein and some fat for breakfast." It was a solution, but he never thought that gluten could have been the cause. Very interesting... -- And yes, thank GOODNESS for Chex! lol... I've been eating...
  13. So, something just struck me this morning, about breakfast. I always have loved cold cereal. But I knew that if I ate a bowl of cold cereal I would get this sudden hunger a couple of hours later. The sudden, shaky, sweaty, weak kind of hunger, where I had to eat something immediately. I always called it hypoglycemia, although I was never officially diagnosed...
  14. Ooooooooooh, Snickers! yummmm..........
  15. Good tip Kayo... every piece of broccoli I have cancels out a bunch of chips. Right?
  16. So -- I went browsing through the grocery store again today and made a discovery. I had thought that gluten-free would be healthier since I'll be cooking more from scratch. Well... discovered my VERY favorite junk food, Utz ripple cut potato chips, is gluten-free! woot! And what was my very first thought? Not "oh really, these are not good for me".. but...
  17. Thanks for the recipe. I might give it a try one day. I used to make pizza at home a lot, but not with from-scratch crust. I'd buy either the dough or the already-made crust from the store. lol.. The guy at zPizza told me that they don't make their gluten-free crust because of issues with cc. Instead they order it from a trusted source (I forget where he...
  18. I don't have young children and was just browsing through this forum looking for any ideas for myself (just diagnosed). I've picked up some good ideas about lunches, snacks, and bread. -- But, I just had to comment on your post, to say how happy I am that your son's behavior and learning has improved so much! I have two kids who are older now, but I remember...
  19. Wooooooooooooot! Pizza! lol.... I've been reading back through this forum and somewhere back on page 50 or so someone talked about how she was going to miss her pizza and beer. Well..! I've discovered Zpizza. Gluten-free crust! And it's good. I've just had a bad experience with Trader Joe's gluten-free rice bread (gag) so I didn't know what to expect...
  20. I'm very new also, as you can see by my post count. But I can recommend one thing right off the bat.... go back and read this board! I started on page 100 just for fun and am working my way back toward page one. I'm taking notes on all the good tips, brands, and recipe ideas that I see. For example, try Udi's bread. And there is a gluten-free beer. ...
  21. I'm also interested in the cider. I'm used to cider being a non-alcoholic beverage that's "stronger" or darker than ordinary apple juice. One can have "hard cider" which is cider that's fermented. But is there alcoholic cider that's already bottled? Like hard lemonade? Sounds like it could be yummy, and a good option on a hot summer day. [i'm planning...
  22. Mack, do you have one particular recipe that you can share? I do have a bread machine, brand new in fact (bought it last month and haven't had a second to sit down and figure out how to work it, lol). Believe it or not my husband toasted a piece of the Trader Joe's bread last night and said it wasn't bad. oy...! He's going to try it this morning for...
  23. Thanks everyone. This Trader Joe's bread truly is horrid so I guess I'll make the trek over to Whole Foods for Udi's. The "trek" is all of .... maybe a mile. lol.. I had just had my fill of shopping today, so didn't want to do any more. And, I will try some organic wine and see if that makes the difference. -- But I'm expecting tonight and tomorrow...
  24. Okay, week two of trying to be gluten-free. Went to Trader Joe's today and bought some things, including their brand of rice bread. I'm eating it now, toasted. Not so sure about it. Maybe this will be something I'll just have to get used to? -- I've seen a lot of references on this site to Udi's bread. They didn't have it at Trader Joe's so I'll have...
  25. I should add that these wafers at Cokesbury are for Protestant churches. I read through the info at the site that someone provided in this thread (sorry, can't see the replies to know who it was) about the Catholic church and it sounds like if it doesn't have wheat then it's not "valid" for communion in the Catholic church. Don't know if that's still official...
