  1. I had almost identical symptoms to your husband last year and had a full neurologic work-up for multiple sclerosis, lyme, etc. It ended up being due to gluten cross-contamination as well. I was strictly gluten free in a household of little gluten eaters, and even though I had a separate toaster, wash rag, pasta strainer, etc. it was not enough. I also had...
  2. I agree with nicolebeth about the need to keep nursing!
  3. I used to love KIND bars but began to react to them last spring and thought I was getting cross-contaminated. Since then I have been diagnosed with a sulfite intolerance, and looking back, my GI reactions were likely due to the sulfites in the dried fruits. Just something to consider. I was able to eat KIND bars for my first 2 years being gluten-free without...
  4. I have reacted to just about all of the Chex as well over the past 2 years. Since then I've discovered that I have a sulfite intolerance, and looking back, I was probably getting sick from the molasses in all of them (molasses has a high natural sulfite load). The Apple Cinnamon Chex actually contain enough sulfites that General Mills is forced to label it...
  5. Yes, this is a real diagnosis, and it effects between 6 to 8% of our population, or approximately 18 million people. Many doctors and patients are unaware that it exists. Most of the papers on this topic have only been published in the last 2-3 years. The British Medical Journal published a case study and review of gluten sensitivity in their November 30...
  6. I know that this title sounds very boring (so much so that I doubt that many will read any further than this). But, if you can bear with me, there is some fascinating research involving the role of the innate immune system in reactions to wheat. Trust me! The role of the immune system is to fight infection. There are two main types of immunity: innate...
  7. You should be fine to keep nursing. If any gluten passes through, you should also have some antigliadin antibodies bodies pass though the ameliorate the effects! I was glutened a few times while nursing my youngest last year with no problems at all. Congratulations on your new wee baby!
  8. Thank you Diana! Although I am 3 years into this gluten-free life I feel like I am still learning everyday. Thank you for reading and your kind words! Jess
  9. I wonder if he would have came to the same conclusion if he himself had suffered from Celiac Disease for years and was now dealing with all of the after effects like so many of us are. Thank you for bringing our attention to this IH. I have had tons of people ask me about this book.
  10. A few more things I forgot: sweet potato fries and chips!
  11. I also cook for a family of 6 and we have made the transition to being totally gluten-free over the past few years. I am the only Celiac in my family but kept getting sick from cross contamination from sharing a kitchen. We have drastically decreased our amount of gluten-free processed foods as well and that has helped a ton. We eat whatever we can that...
  12. I also get GI distress and feel unwell after eating it so I've had to remove it totally from my diet. It seems like there are a lot of us whose systems do not tolerate it!
  13. I’ve realized that I have not written for almost a week and I think I am okay with this. When I started this blog two months ago, I anticipated being able to post about once a week, so I think I am on track. Between working full-time, running, and trying to squeeze in some sleep, the main reason that I have not had time is that I have four small children. ...
  14. I began to get sick from wine, especially whites, about 2 years into being gluten free due to a sulfite intolerance which I had never had before. Some white wines have 3x the amount of sulfites than reds. I kept a food journal and realized that I was reacting to other sulfited foods like raisins and dried fruits, molasses, coconut flakes, and vinegar. There...
  15. Hi guys, just seeing this now...and I realize that I made a huge mistake in my initial post. I did NOT react to Almond Breeze, it was Almond Dream which, after the fact, through searching for other threads, learned is made one shared equipment with Rice Dream which is milled through barley. I wrote this post during a very bad period of brain fog! I am...
  16. Thanks Jess and Sora. I've also been on the Silk Almond milk for about 2 weeks without any problems. It has guar gum, but I am choosing that over the carrageenan which is in all of the other almond milks. I appreciate your advice! J
  17. Hi, Thank you for commenting...I am happy to know that someone is reading! I think that this is a big reminder that Celiac Disease is a multi-systemic autoimmune disease which effects much more than the GI tract. I am a mom of 4 and I am very closely watching all of my kids for symptoms. My mother was not diagnosed until after I was, and looking back...
  18. Chex paints, One more thing...did you have your thyroid checked out? Gluten intolerance and Celiac Disease often go hand in hand with thyroid problems. Thyroid gland function can be accepted by pregnancy and being postpartum. I have had symptoms of overactive thyroid after delivering a baby.
  19. Hi, I think that I had gluten sensitivity since childhood, but I wasn't diagnosed with Celiac Disease until I was postpartum with my 3rd child. My body went totally haywire and I was rather sick in the months leading up to diagnosis and going off of gluten. I miscarried a year later in 2011, and then got pregnant again and delivered a healthy, full term...
  20. Most of the articles about gluten and celiac disease I’ve came across in the media have focused on symptoms related to digestion, such as abdominal pain and bloating after eating gluten, and damage to the small intestine. The bulk of the gluten-related discussions on the celiac forums I’ve perused concern questions and answers regarding the diagnosis of ...
  21. I scour the medical literature on a regular basis and I just came across an editorial in which it was postulated that non celiac gluten sensitivity is caused by activation of our "innate" immune system...it works by a different pathway than most other autoimmune diseases, but is still autoimmune in the sense that our bodies are recognizing gluten as "foreign...
  22. Hi, I had a lot of issues like you after being gluten-free for about a year and they ended up being due to a soy intolerance. I agree with IrishHeart to eliminate dairy first, though, because it anecdotally seems to be the most common intolerance in celiacs. If not dairy, then consider soy and so on...Good luck and I hope you feel better soon! We need to...
  23. Hi Laura, You are right. There is increasing information that non celiac gluten sensitivity is associated with neurologic problems well as autoimmune problems, likely through our innate immune systems. It is not as "harmless" of a diagnosis as it is billed to be!
  24. Thanks for posting this! I have seen a lot of ads for Celiact and have been curious to find out what people's experiences have been! J
  25. Eosinophilic Esophagitis, also known as “EE,” is a gastrointestinal disorder that, like Celiac Disease, seems to be increasing in frequency of diagnosis. I first heard of EE when I was in my pediatric residency. I worked with a Pediatric GI specialist who seemed to diagnose all of his infant patients with gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) with EE. While I w...
