  1. LOL Although I think a pill might be a better option, or maybe a dart that could be shot from a safe distance. I have yet to meet a mean person who believed they had a problem so sticking with the diet would be a real problem With the dart option, however, we could all become "snipers for peace"!
  2. I don't blame you a bit for having dinner at home, looking at your list of allergies a traditional Thanksgiving dinner would be a first class ticket to ER! I'm glad you will be able to enjoy a meal without worrying that you and your son will get sick. I hope that your mother understands why you've made that decision, I can't imagine that she could be too...
  3. ROTFL....that is soooo funny! BTW, I love your name TriticusToxicum. Clever! You guys are all great, these are some really helpful responses. Sissy, my MIL is usually pretty good about gluten with my son, although she doesn't see him very often and when she does it's usually because I've invited them over for dinner...so *I* am the one cooking...
  4. *What?!?* Gag-a-Maggot! I have quit eating all pork but bacon (an that only rarely), but as of right now I think pork bacon is off the list! Turkey tastes OK and has about a millionth of the fat, anyway. I've taken a good look at the food-laws in the Bible (not Kosher law, which developed from the Biblical laws, but the actual laws in the Bible...
  5. Great idea! My local grocery store...the closest one to my house....just re-did their store and now they have a HUGE gluten free food supply! I can't even get some of the brands they have at our regular store at the health food store. I LOVE the food manager and have made a point to track him down twice and thank him. He said both times that they...
  6. That's exactly how I feel! We actually moved back to this state to be close to family, and now it turns out family doesn't really care *where* we live. I feel like a fool for giving up our house in a nice little city and moving here, only to find that unless I am serving my MIL she has no use for me I guess I'm being melodramatic and should really...
  7. We have a 9 yr old boy and homeschool, too! And we have similar issues...not being able to concentrate, not being able to sit still, etc. It is remarkably worse if he has been glutened! Also, he has angry outbursts if he's been glutened or if he has anything with red food dye. I'm so glad you're seeing positive change already!
  8. ROTFL about the fantasy reactions! Those are great. It's true, lactose intolerance is very different from gluten reactions. If I've been glutened I get reactions to lactose, too...I spent several years dairy-free before I went gluten-free and it was entirely different. If I'm sensitive to dairy, I might get some bloating and a little D within a few hours...
  9. Thanks, cassidy. You're right, she knew exactly what she was doing and I do think it was probably part of her problem about where we're going to church. Thanks for the words of support, I am tempted often to fight back with the same sort of thing but all it would do is bring me down to that level. Some days are easier than others
  10. Ok, so I haven't had the gene test but does anyone know if they know for sure that they've identified all the genes that cause it and how accurate the gene tests are? My dad had the gene test and doesn't have the gene. My mom hasn't yet, but I was wondering what if both parents don't have the gene, but I have the disease? Is that possible? How accurate...
  11. Yup, MIL lives about 10 minutes away. Sigh. We used to be very close, but she's just gotten really difficult over the last few years and right now I really wish we didn't live so close! Wow, rinne...sorry your MIL is difficult too! I can't believe she said that. I am sort of in your boat as far as realizing what we're dealing with here...dh prefers...
  12. What was happening with your walking? Just curious. I may email my mom this link so she chan check it out herself! It will make her feel better to know she's not alone.
  13. To clarify, it's hard financially because I am not working (except for teaching the other kids 2x per week) and because there *are* some costs that we wouldn't have if the kids were in public school, even though for us the curriculum is paid for by the state...things like extra paper, art supplies not included in the curriculum, and we also do a lot of extra...
  14. I don't have time go too far into it right now, but I am homeschooling my kids and we're loving it! My son was like your dd, very bright and went into kindergarten reading and knowing pretty much everything they were teaching that year. He went from being a fun, happy, eager to learn kid...seeking out knowledge and exploring everything around him...to a...
  15. Hi, all-- My mom just had bloodwork done and is waiting for the results. She has had symptoms for many years now including bloating, fibromyalgia (spelled that one wrong--sorry!), constipation, gas, stomach cramps/pain, fuzzy brain (for lack of a better term), fatigue, mood swings, anxiety and a few more I can't think of. These symptoms all improved...
  16. Argh, do you guys mind if I vent for a second? My in-laws went to Rome a few weeks ago, and guess what my mother in law brought me back for a gift? A WHEAT chocolate torte!!! A little background...My MIL has been difficult for a couple of years now and we are experiencing a sort of holy war in our family--she has become ultra-Catholic of late and DH...
  17. Yea! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I've made the recipe as a sauce for another dish, but it hadn't occured to me to use it as a soup substitute until the other day. The texture was just so much like the condensed soup that I can't believe I didn't think of it before! I'll try it with garlic, yum!
  18. I second the "Saving Dinner" cookbook...really excellent, yummy, healthy meals and they give you a weekly shopping list with everything you need for the entire week's dinners. I have rarely had to discount a meal in her book due to gluten, almost always you can just change a few ingredients and you're good to go. It really made a difference in our family...
  19. *blush* I have to admit to having no idea as to what TNT is....could you fill me in? I'm no so up these things lately. Someone else posted a yummy looking cream soup recipe at Open Original Shared Link this one looks more involved but tastier than the one I posted, which is good for a condensed soup substitute in other recipes but wouldn't be good...
  20. There may be a something just like this already on this board, but I just figured out a great gluten-free condensed cream of mushroom soup knock-off I wanted to share. heat 3 tbsp of cream cheese up, add 1 3/4 cups milk, and whisk in 3 tbsp. of rice flour and salt to taste (if you want it close to the real thing, you unfortunately have to add a lot of...
  21. I usually use plain rice flour, or a mixture of 1/2 rice and 1/2 corn starch or tapioca flour. Either seems to work just fine, in fact I think it thickens up faster than a flour-based roux. A roux with 3 tbsp rice flour, 3 tbsp cream cheese and 1 3/4 cups milk seasoned with salt and some mushroom chuncks makes a reasonable substitute for condensed...
  22. That will really be too bad if they get rid of their gluten-free menu! That said, I should add that I've had both great and awful dinners at Outback. The first few times we went there it was like heaven...gluten-free dessert and such great food! However, I got glutened there twice. The first was my own darn fault, I forgot to order the salad gluten...
  23. I didn't read all the replies, but I wanted to let you know that I had a similar pain in the upper right side, right under my lowest ribs. It almost felt like a muscle catch, or something...the golfball analogy really fits. As if there were something there. Thats the place where the small and large intestine connect, and it's an area that can really get...
  24. I love this thread! For me, it's no more painful gas, no more loud tummy grumbles (soooo embarrassing!), my tummy is so much flatter, finally able to lose that 10 or so pounds that just wouldn't go away no matter how hard I worked out/dieted, no more nasty rash all over my legs and back, no more cracked fingers due to the rash, my face cleared up, I have...
  25. How long have you been gluten-free? I had breathlessness and dizziness at the peak of my sickness before going off gluten, and it eventually went away. It took a couple of months at least, though. I don't think I was anemic enough to cause those symptoms, they just seemed to be a part of the celiac package as it were. I hope you feel better soon!
