Exactly. May I add: Dear manager - if I ask you if you can accommodate a gluten-free diet, don't lie and say "yes" if you really mean "absolutely not."

What about the hot chocolate? (I'm in Ontario as well)

Hi everyone, I just got back from a long weekend in Montreal with my boyfriend. While there, we ate at The Keg in Old Montreal, and it was FANTASTIC. They have an entirely separate menu for gluten-free, and I was able to eat without any problems at all. I had the caesar salad with grilled chicken and sweet potato fries - yup, all gluten-free and no cc...

ARCHIVED Looking For Cheese!
Cheryl-C replied to Cheryl-C's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
So I didn't find a listing on the website of the gluten-free cheese, though I'm hurrying out the door soon so I'm rushing a bit. The person I spoke to at Highland Farms was the manager, and despite some bounce-around customer service, he did seem to know what he's talking about - once I got to him. If all else fails, I go with the Kraft cheddar as you suggested... -
ARCHIVED Looking For Cheese!
Cheryl-C replied to Cheryl-C's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks Kareng - by the way, beer cheese sounds nasty, and not just because of the gluten. Blech! Peter - I was definitely keeping Kraft in mind, thanks. I talked to Highland Farms and they said they carry cheese by a company called Agropur, and apparently Agropur makes a couple kinds of gluten-free cheese. I'm going to google them now and see what happens... -
ARCHIVED Looking For Cheese!
Cheryl-C posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi everyone, I'm looking for a sharp cheese (something to go well with tart, green apples) that I can find at the local grocery store. I called the Natural Food Depot (in Scarborough) and he said they have one by a company called Lancentre but I wasn't able to find a website at all. (I had him spell me the name, and I'm pretty sure I heard him right.)... -
ARCHIVED Was I Glutened?
Cheryl-C posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Normally when I get glutened, I get insane ear pain (which apparently is the "grain allergy" part as opposed to the "gluten intolerance" part) and cramps, bloating, leading to D. Yay. Last night, about 1.5 hours after eating dinner, the wicked ear pain started. Burning knives in both my ears, went on the whole night, and still now. Loads of fun when you... -
ARCHIVED Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice?
Cheryl-C replied to Cheryl-C's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks Peter. That's a good point - anyone can say anything they like on the internet, so believing the manufacturer is probably more likely to be your best bet. Their post didn't have any information to back it up, it was just a statement. -
ARCHIVED Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice?
Cheryl-C posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hey folks, Does anyone have definitive information about Ocean Spray cranberry juice products? (How about their craisins?) I was looking for info today about the juice, and found some conflicting information. The "official" (American) Ocean Spray website said their juice products are gluten-free. I found another website that said not all Ocean Spray... -
Very sorry to hear about this Take care of yourself! Frosting is good for the soul

ARCHIVED Confusion Over Bread Crumbs!
Cheryl-C replied to Cheryl-C's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think it's definitely worth a try. We buy them a lot, they're used to seeing our faces there once a week or so. I guess if we went a time that wasn't busy, I'd be able to talk to someone about it and get some more information. I'd be willing to keep a standard order even, to guarantee them the business. I want my kabobs, darnit! lol I will keep you all... -
ARCHIVED Confusion Over Bread Crumbs!
Cheryl-C replied to Cheryl-C's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
CassP - it's true, there are lots of good ways to get iron. I've never been someone who loved to eat meat, especially beef (yuck) so when we found this tasty combo of beef and lamb (with spices) it was heaven. Anyone who's had a Greek Gyro knows the taste I'm talking about. Ooooo. That said, it makes me wonder if I could find them somewhere else without... -
ARCHIVED Confusion Over Bread Crumbs!
Cheryl-C replied to Cheryl-C's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks for the ideas. I was thinking something along the sames lines of each of you. I have noticed the last couple of times I ate the (so awesome) souvlaki, my gut was fine but my breath was a little shallow. Because we've been undergoing some fluctuating weather in Toronto this last week or so, I had put it down to that. My dr had said I may have... -
ARCHIVED Confusion Over Bread Crumbs!
Cheryl-C posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi folks, I've been doing gluten-free for a couple of months now, and had thought I'd figured out what my sensitivities were. I've noticed my stomach feels better, my ears feel better, everything has been great. HOWEVER - last night I discovered my favourite souvlaki (from our local Greek butcher) has bread crumbs in it. I've been eating it about 3... -
A couple of posters have mentioned people talking about "picky eaters." I really, really hope that no one has been called "picky" on a date because of needing to eat gluten-free (or whatever-free) due to an allergy/intolerance. There's a HUGE difference between "I don't eat that" and "I can't eat that." Harumph!

I've been with my boyfriend a little over 6 months now, and I went gluten-free about 2 months ago. He's been very supportive, asking a lot of questions, helping me find restaurants, etc. I know it gets frustrating for him though. Last night he said that it's sometimes frustrating that we can't always eat out, and I know that's true; I do feel bad for him...

ARCHIVED Follow-Up With The Doctor
Cheryl-C replied to Cheryl-C's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Interesting ... I never had tubes in my ears, but whenever I get a cold it always hits hardest in my sinuses, as if that part of my body/immune system is already weaker than everything else. Hmm. I swear, some days it feels like two steps forward, one step back. -
Some people have a hard time understanding, and I can't say that I really blame them. A couple of months ago I was eating small amounts of gluten (tortillas, a piece of rye bread here and there) and I was ok. Yes my stomach hurt and my bowels were irregular, and I was tired, but I was ok. Since going off gluten entirely, coming into contact with even a *little...

Today I am suffering from eating a rather pink chicken breast for dinner last night. Yes, entirely my fault - it was take-out, I saw it looked a bit pink, but being tired of being "that picky eater" I decided to eat it. Oooh, bad choice. Anyway, to help combat the nausea/vomiting that I've been dealing with this morning, I took one adult finkmote...

ARCHIVED Do You Expect Relatives To Cater To Your Gluten-Free Diet?
Cheryl-C replied to ljgs's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
This is the really important part. It's like some people are determined not to get it. Thanks for offering, but it's made with _________ and you know I can't eat _______ so why are you getting so bent out of shape when I (very politely) say "It really looks great, but unfortunately because of my allergy I can't have any"? It's like you trying their food is... -
ARCHIVED Do You Expect Relatives To Cater To Your Gluten-Free Diet?
Cheryl-C replied to ljgs's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
(sorry, I got cut off? LOL) Our bbq was a birthday party, and out of 13 people, I'm the only one gluten-free. My aunt brought a cake for everyone else, and I got a cupcake from the bakery I trust. The only thing that ticked me off was that the rest of my family somehow got their crumbs all over everything - including the gluten-free cookies my mom had... -
ARCHIVED Do You Expect Relatives To Cater To Your Gluten-Free Diet?
Cheryl-C replied to ljgs's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Having just been through something similar this weekend, I would say yes to both questions. When it's your allergy (or in this case, your child's) you are naturally going to be more informed, invested, etc; it's only natural. It sounds like your inlaws are not familiar with what kinds of things she can have - maybe provide them with a list of mainstream... -
ARCHIVED What's Your Favorite gluten-free "mainstream" Meal?
Cheryl-C replied to crimsonviolet's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Great, great suggestions! Kudos to the OP - now we can all snag recipe ideas It's only been a couple of months here, and being summer, I haven't really looked into soups or stews. We do a LOT of grilled veggies on the bbq, and we do a lot of (plain) grilled chicken or souvlaki. Our local (Greek) butcher does fresh souvlaki and chicken breasts, and they... -

ARCHIVED Follow-Up With The Doctor
Cheryl-C replied to Cheryl-C's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Good point - by that time I think I was going light with the gluten, or was gluten-free but always sick with still eating the wrong things. You're right, that could have been the issue. I don't want to retake the test though if that means having to go back to eating gluten. (Would there be a point to doing that?) My dr seemed satisfied that not eating...
