  1. I would recommend getting referred to a gastro specialist - more chance they know what it is and how to test and treat. Blood tests will probably be done first and they may want an endoscopy if those are positive. I had frequent infections too. I had a rash on both arms, sometimes blistery, but never itchy. Doctors said my skin was just not exfoliating...
  2. I would encourage you to see a gastroenterologist before you go off of dairy and gluten to get some blood tests. Knowing for sure will help you adhere to the diet. You must be religious with the diet when you start - even a crumb can cause a reaction. As for the milk, that depends on if you are lactose intolerant or casein interolerant. Both are common with...
  3. Yup, I am a nestie. That's funny - I had been thinking about posting about Celiac there after I was diagnosed but figured probably no one on there had ever heard of it
  4. Yeah, I think the idea is that we would like a cure, so it does suck to have it. It doesn't suck as much some other diseases I can think of, but it does still suck. I think a lot of us were just so relieved to finally figure out what was wrong with us that we embrace Celiac disease as the cure and not the problem because we started feeling better when we...

    ARCHIVED Awareness

I am a member of our local Toastmasters and gave a speech on it Tuesday. So there's about 20 more people who are educated on it! I got Best Speaker too!
  6. Thanks guys. I am angry at my primary physician right now. Back in March, he was investigating my anemia. I had asked him about Celiac and he was the one who mentioned something about a colonoscopy and people only getting Celiac if they had been to 3rd world countries. He apparently started investigating leukemia and lymphoma instead as the source of...
  7. Yes, hopefully the 5 tests are the ones Kaiti mentioned. You need to be eating gluten for these tests to be reliable, so if you had been eating gluten the 10 days prior to the test, it should be correct in its results. If you had been on a gluten-free diet prior to the test, it could skew the results, although I am not sure how much.
  8. Did they check your gall bladder?
  9. I do think perhaps our bodies are just being too darn efficient. I trained for a half marathon last fall before I was diagnosed and gained nearly ten pounds on a diet of less than 1800 calories, small meals throughout the day. People kept saying it was muscle and still do (since I haven't lost any since I stopped running due to energy), but if muscle makes...
  10. Did you have organic corn flakes or other? All Kellogs cereals (including corn flakes and rice krispies) have malt flavoring (barley) in them as far as I know.
  11. Hey guys, I just had an experience eating out where I had to ask about the dressing. I told the server I can't eat anything with wheat and asked if the dressing had soy sauce. He said yes, went back to the chef, and then came back recommending a dressing that didn't have soy sauce. It was pretty good, but I am pretty worried now that I might have been glutened...
  12. I was diagnosed by blood test, primarily the EMA. I was feeling horrible all of the time. It has not been a week yet for me gluten free, but I am feeling a little better already. Hope your results help you out.
  13. Strange. I do not have this, but I do have the acne problem. I am thinking about getting tested for hypothyroid again even though my numbers came back fine in the fall. My mom has coughing fits every now and then and some skin rashes that are not DH. She was told it was a reaction to wheat but has never been tested for celiac (although I am making her...
  14. DId you have these blood tests done before you quit eating wheat or after? Being gluten free before the tests could have made them a false negative. The tTg test you had was very specific, and if you were on gluten when the test was negative, then that means 99% you do not have celiac. If you were not on gluten it doesn't mean anything. If you do not want...
  15. I also recommend getting referred to a gastroenterologist if you haven't alerady. I have found that family docs like to treat your symptoms, whereas the specialists want to find what is causing your symptoms and start taking care of that. Your doc has tried to rule out some things in causes with the colonoscopy and things, but there are still many other things...
  16. I was just diagnosed, so my mom asked her doc about it this week. My mom has diabetes type 1, but it was adult onset because everytime she got pregnant or sick, her immune system would hurt her pancreas, giving her less and less insulin. She has no digestive systems. Unfortunately, the doc lumped the test in with the next round of blood tests that my mom...
  17. So I thought from what they said on the phone that I would be coming in today to just see the nurse practicioner and schedule an endoscopy. That wasn't at all how it went. She was awesome. She looked at the blood tests and after consulting with the doctor decided endoscopy was not necessary and to start the gluten-free diet immediately. She said to follow...
  18. That has to be a little disappointing. I have been diagnosed with IBS, and I guess since we still know so little about it, it still kinda seems like a bogus diagnosis. If you have predominant const., try Zelnorm. It does help some. I have heard that Zoloft really does help with the spasms too and is not diagnosed just because some doc thinks it's all in your...
  19. I eat Orville Redenbaccer (or however you spell it) Smart Pop like once a day. Is it safe? Their label couldn't be more vague - special Orville popping corn, natural flavors, all that stuff. Does anyone know, or am I gonna have to call them? What about Yoplait yogurt? why protein concentrate, pectin, kosher gelatin, natural flavor, tricalcium phosphate...
  20. These results look like your family member does not have celiac disease and is therfore not experiencing damage to the small intestine. They might, however, have a gluten sensitivity that is causing a reaction.
  21. I have read that, in the US, modified food starch is almost always made with corn and therefore ok. This was from the gluten-free bible, I think. It the modified flour, or whatever they call it, that is not ok.
  22. I can't remember what all the numbers were - I don't think they tested for everything, just TSH, T4 and something else. The only one I remember was TSH, which was .7, so that's not even close to hypothyroid. The others were well within the normal range too.
  23. Hey guys, I had my thyroid testing in the Fall, I think, and everything came back perfectly fine. However, I want to be tested again. Since September, I have been trying to lose about 5 lbs, only to gain 10. I have even kept a food journal to make sure I have not been lying to myself about what calories I'm taking in, and I have been exercising 5 days a week...
  24. Hey there, I am in Athens, are you close to here, or are you further west? I am going to see a specialist here next Friday, so I will try to repost and tell you how he is. I think your husband may need a doctor to diagnose and talk to him to scare him into following the diet. Kati and others will tell you - he is 40-100 times more likely to get nonHodgkins...
  25. These are the same symptoms I have, and I had positive blood work. Still two more weeks till I get a definitive diagnose, but I definitely think these can be symptoms.
