ARCHIVED Cheeses?
skbird replied to aljf's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've heard that it's a miniscule amount of any grain left in blue cheese, if there is any, but I have gotten sick now from Cambozola brand blue cheese (which is a German made blue cheese brie) and the Maries was from the salad bar (by me), and freshly poured (not double-dipped...) so no croutons. I'm thinking that the dressing was made from a mix, and may... -
ARCHIVED Reactions To Gluten
skbird replied to tagger's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi stemanndemon - I was at one point diagnosed (incorrectly) as bipolar with psychotic episodes, and hospitalized once for being suicidal. In high school I had been in the play, "One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest" - I played Nurse Ratched, and I kept thinking when I was in this hospital, wow, Nurse Ratched in a hospital... weird.... I, too, have that... -
ARCHIVED Cheeses?

I live in California and I've never seen Boar's Head, but then maybe there's an embargo on non-California cow cheese (it's a big campaign here - "Good Cheese Comes from Happy [California] Cows" (uh, as opposed to, say, "mad" cows???) ... I can find cheese from other countries here, though, so who knows... When I look at the Delphi food list, they list... -
ARCHIVED Then Last Item With Gluten You Ate...
skbird replied to VegasCeliacBuckeye's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I'm not certain if this is it or not but it's when I finally knew it was the problem. We were just about to tear out our kitchen as the pipes in the 60 year old walls had rusted through and flooded the place. I was excited because I had just discovered a pizza parlor nearby that made pizza on whole wheat crust and as a hypoglycemic, I thought this would be... -
I can't remember if I've posted this before but what finally convinced me to take B12, besides reading that folks like us are often deficient, was reading this page from the Merck Manual. Open Original Shared Link I had had a comprehensive metabolic panel done three times in less than a year as my doctor was trying to track my too-high cholesterol ...

ARCHIVED Feeling Sick And Bloated From Rice!
skbird replied to mela14's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That sounds so frustrating! I know the feeling - sometimes I think I've finally got it all figured out and then something happens, like yesterday for lunch I had something new - Chicken of the Sea smoked salmon in a pouch - it was really good! Had very basic ingredients, too. Well, 3 hours later my stomach started feeling gassy and funny, then my head did... -

I'm motivated now! I *love* blue/bleu cheese! I go to a cheese shop and will spend $50 if I'm not careful... drool... <homer sound> Thanks! Stephanie -
ARCHIVED Cheeses?
skbird replied to aljf's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'll give one a shot when I can find a verified gluten free blue cheese as I did get sick after eating one that isn't verified. I was pretty surprised, actually, that it made me sick, but don't want to go through that again. I wish I could find Boar's Head locally or one of the other ones listed on the delphi forums but I have not had any luck. Thanks... -
ARCHIVED Cheeses?

Yeah, it's a weird thing. But I don't eat mainstream cheeses all that often, I am a major cheese lover and will go out of my way to try this weird one or that artisan one. The stinkier, the better! I love the French imports - and it appears those are the most likely suspects. I did feel pretty bad after eating the Cambzola one so I will avoid, though sadly... -
I always forget about this but it's a great idea! I should just keep a roll of foil in my car... LOL! Stephanie

I dunno... I've been trying to find any bit of info on this for years now - all I can find is that nightshade veggies stimulate the immune system, especially with arthritis, and are not all that good for people who have these kinds of problems. Also, solanine is a neurotoxin and too much can cause anyone problems, I guess some are just more sensitive. (Uh...

ARCHIVED Cheeses?
skbird replied to aljf's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hmmm. Well, if I do a search on Google with "gluten free gorgonzola" I get a few hits: Open Original Shared Link Cheese Allowed: All aged cheese, such as cheddar, Swiss, edam, parmesan; cottage cheese; cream cheese; pasteurized processed cheese; cheese spreads. Avoid: Any cheese product containing oat gum, some veined cheeses (bleu, stilton, roquefort... -
I would be interested to find out if there are actual allergy tests for potatoes. I have talked to several allergists in my town and been told to refer to a gastroenterologist about the potato problem, and then talked to gastros and told to talk to allergists. No one knows much about this problem. Stephanie

I'm always leary of grills as I always have to request the grill be cleaned before I have food made. I have a couple of well-trained friends who cook my food on one part, make special marinades (very nice of them!!!) and make sure they use utinsels that have not touched the other food. Those are very rare and good friends. I'd be concerned eating a...

Are you sure about gorgonzola? I was under the impression that any blue-veined cheese *could* contain gluten, depending on if the cuture was started on bread or not. Ah, and I have seen brie blue cheese (Cambzola is my favorite) and the last time I ate that stuff I got gluten sick so I am avoiding that from now on. Blue veined cheeses are my favorite... -
Me! Me! Me! I can't eat any nightshade plant, including potatoes, tomatoes, peppers (all except for black pepper which is not an "official" pepper), eggplant, tobacco, or kava kava. Uh, deadly nightshade is included but I'd guess that no one can eat that stuff, hence the name "deadly." I don't have immediate diahrrea but what does happen is this: either...

ARCHIVED New To Gf Diet - Is Coffee Ok?
skbird replied to Lisa Ann's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have never reacted to a decaf, water processed or not, but avoid those that aren't water-processed just to be on the safe side. Of course my favorite coffee place, Peets, has been giving out free coffee all this month and I've been drinking whatever decaf they have made, so I don't follow this rule at all times. No reaction, though. A drink with brownies... -

Really? I'll have to check it out. I listened to "Misplaced Childhood" a zillion times. And "The Thieving Magpie"... Worst story - once I was driving someone around in my car (1992?) and listening to Marillion and this guy said (he was a musician) "Man, these guys would be good if they weren't so overproduced!" Grrrrrrrr! Stephanie -
Burdee - How did they come out? They were the first gluten-free cookies I made and I thought they were great. I love anything peanut butter. I haven't made them lately but would probably consider putting some chocolate chips in them - love peanut butter-chocolate chip cookies.... Mmmmmmm! Stephanie

ARCHIVED Shugr...new Gf Alternative To Other Sweeteners
skbird replied to celiac3270's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have gone around on many different artificial, natural, lower glycemic, alternative sweeteners and am currently having a lot of success mixing xylitol, stevia and agave nectar in things I make. I have been making brownies every weekend as my big treat (not perfected yet, I'll post when I do) and using that combo - it's great. Plus I'm using a lot less sugar... -
ARCHIVED Food Allergies As A Result Of Gluten Intolerance
skbird replied to junevarn's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I had problems with nuts, especially walnuts and pecans, before I went low carb 3 years ago (and effectively, 95% gluten free). When I added gluten back in, the nuts started bothering me - small irritations or sores in my mouth, mostly. Now that's gone again now that I've been gluten free for 6 months (didn't take that long, BTW). Shellfish will be out... -

OK, this will sound weird but I have been using coconut oil (it amazingly works really well!) and then Tom's of Maine roll on over that. No antipersperant in that but it does well with smells. I will likely move to Dove for the summer as it gets really hot here and sweating isn't cool when you have to look professional. I also like Tuesday's Plantation Tea... -

Seeing a couple of 60 year olds doing Beavis and Butthead - yeah, Just means you never have to get old... Ianm - wish I could say the low carb way of life killed the sweet tooth in me. Actually, since going gluten free I have been able to eat more carbs and have rebuilt my love of certain sweets. And tolerance, too, as for a while there I couldn't stand... -
