  1. Here's more on hypoglycemia. I have been aware of my having it for 3 years now but am fairly convinced it's been a lot longer (pretty sure my whole life). Open Original Shared Link I think it's fairly common if you are gluten-intolerant. Stephanie
  2. I have called at least one company - the company that makes a medicine called Mucinex when I had a really bad cold this winter. I usually email companies, though. A couple have been bad about returning emails - the Peelu company is the worst so far (they make a gum you can find in the health food store - 3 emails and two calls with no answer). There was...
  3. I get this. Often, when I wake in the morning I will scratch my back, chest, whatever, and a few minutes later in the shower (my husband and I shower together every morning... sorry if that's TMI! ) he always says, "what happened?!?!?!" because I have all these bright red streaks on my body. They will still be there after the shower. They don't last more...
  4. This is really interesting info, ery. I have done some research on my gluten genes and one of them is very common in people with narcolepsy. I don't believe I have any symptoms at this point but used to have episodes of being very drowsy out of the blue. I used to get the nods in my classes like you wouldn't believe. Also had sleep problems (insomnia) for...
  5. Definitely - go for it on your vacation. If you have a condo you are set. My husband is now so worried about our travelling anywhere without a kitchen he thinks we should just go camping from now on!!! Condo is the way to go, especially with all the great food at your fingertips in Hawaii! Stephanie
  6. One time, about two months after going gluten free I was supposed to go out with a bunch of people for dinner. I had suggested Chinese because I usually could eat that with my other allergies, intolerances. I asked the waitress about wheat and she said stay away from the noodles, won tons. Then it dawns on me that the soy sauce isn't going to work. I tried...
  7. I take a supplement for this when I get pain on my right side. It's called Stone Free and has things like turmeric, licorice, ginger, marshmallow, and some other things in it. It really helps. Also taking 1 tbsp of epsom salts disolved in warm water when you are having pain really helps - it helps to relax the bile ducts and that helps to release the pressure...
  8. I have only been allergy tested once - age 14 (I'm going to be 34 next month) and was told I am not allergic to wheat. But I had noticed the last year before going gluten-free that when I had white flour food (pizza, for example) it wasn't bad, but that whole grain bread, pizza crust, etc, would make me feel much worse. My uncle is the same way. My mom visits...

    ARCHIVED Migraines

Abby and Jcgirl - isn't that awesome? I can't believe how much better my life is without migraines. Or at least I can't believe I'm not having them all the time. I remember crying when I was 13 and Advil first came out as an over the counter med- first one that fixed my headaches. Isn't that a messed up thing to remember - being so happy you cry over a pain...
  10. I just wanted to add that I, too, was very happy to find something as "simple" as avoiding gluten to make myself feel better. I'm totally fascinated, reading through stuff all the time, researching gene info, on and on and on. I sometimes tell my husband about all this stuff. Then I tell him the other stuff my genes could be associated with - seems like good...
  11. As far as I know, no Irish in me, but 3/4 Dutch, 1/8 Scottish and 1/8 Welsh (so close to being Irish but don't let's start a fight here! ). I was a bit puzzled by my gene results as I have DQ3-9 as one of my two genes and that is pretty rare, as far as I can tell, in my ethnic group. I'm really fair skinned, strawberry blond (nope - that's not me in my...
  12. Could it be that the moons recede as we get older because as people get older, they become naturally deficient in B12? Just curious. Also, my husband is 17 years older than me, he is 50, and he has moons on all of his fingernails, really distinct ones, while I don't. BUT he does have really ridged nails as well. Either he's an exception to the rule or --...
  13. I have a few but I think the only one that directly has anything to do with gluten-intolerance is the hypoglycemia part as that has gotten a lot better since going gluten-free. Not totally, I can't tolerate processed sugar at all, but I can tolerate carby food again. As for the rest, there may be something that links all the different food intolerances...
  14. Tiffany - I'm like that. I'm pretty scientific about most things but it will depend on mood or intuition or if I'm angry at the world (yeah, it happens ) - then I might get something that has been processed in a factory, etc, yadda yadda yadda. Those Sun Drops are great - if you concentrate you can taste the molassas in them.... Stephanie
  15. Sushi is the only eating out I seem to do these days. I BMOB - "bring my own Braggs" and sometimes make cracks with the waitress about the corkage fee. One time at the sushi bar the only actual Japanese guy behind the counter wanted to take a look at my Braggs bottle as he'd never seen it before and then he kidded me about it. He thought I brought my own...
  16. Kimberly - I was going to write in about these (Sun Drops) the other day but didn't get to it after all. I have been eating those off and on for a couple of months now and have had no problems with them. Then I read on the web the other day what you posted and wondered if I should keep eating them. But like I said, I haven't had a reaction to them so maybe...
  17. PS I saw Rush about a year ago - we were right in front of the sound board, in the 10th row of an arena, and I could see every facial wrinkle. It was such an amazing experience! We finally got up and sat up in the lawn area for a bit of fresh air and it was like they were a million miles away. Really cool laser show! My husband is a drummer so he was very...
  18. Oh yeah, I love those dreams! I have had them where I am eating a big slice of cake with chocolate frosting, etc, and then I realize it's got sugar in it, then I realize it has wheat in it, etc. Freaks me out! I also used to dream about eating Taco Bell or pizza, after I had to stop eating peppers and tomatoes. About your friend's graduation - I hate...
  19. There's a lot of really good advice in this thread. If you follow a glycemic index diet you will find that even though brown rice has more protein and fiber than white, it is still higher glycemic (meaning converts to sugar in your body faster) than some other grains like quinoa and buckwheat. So it's really best to limit the use of it if you have hypoglycemia...
  20. Hi Mel - One thing I thought of, sometimes dried fruit is dusted with flour to keep it from sticking. Could that be the cause of that misery? Really sorry! Stephanie PS I saw in your signature that you have been diagnosed with IC. There is unfortunately a chance I have that, too... blech! I'm hoping it's something else! I have had four UTIs this...
  21. Lisa - Your symptoms sound like classic hypoglycemia. When your blood sugar drops, it's usually because your blood sugar went up too quickly (rice can do that, for sure so can candy, fruit, popcorn). When it goes up fast, it comes down fast and you have those kinds of symptoms. If your blood sugar is low you will feel faint, dizzy, have trouble forming...
  22. That was my thinking, after the fact. It's been a big campaign out here - the Round Table Pizza Parlors all are now serving Marie's dressings with their salad bar. I think it's because more people are low-carbing these days and getting salads (they've also introduced a Skinny Crust for those people) and they've beefed up the salad bar by adding boiled egg...
  23. I haven't eaten sweets the whole time I've been at my current job (3 years) and everyone knows this - unless I make them myself. But they keep giving me candies for Christmas, candybars in my mailbox (everyone gets them sometimes, I'm not singled out), etc, and I always just give them to someone else in the office. I don't think anyone thinks its rude, usually...
  24. I think I may have experienced that feeling. Right before going gluten-free I was having this sensation in my stomach when I ate wheat, especially whole wheat, where it would feel really warm in my stomach and sort of itchy, like I was having an allergic rash or something, and I would feel REALLY hungry though I would intellectually know I wasn't. It was...
  25. Be careful with deli meats. There are some that are gluten-free but also some that aren't. There can be broth and additives that are gluten products. I haven't eaten a lot but I think I read that Oscar Meyer is ok (I could be wrong) and I know that most Diestel Turkey products are ok. Here's a list of those: All these are tested gluten-free Breakfast...
