ARCHIVED Pepsi
skbird replied to Ally2005's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yeah, it's *PERFECT* for a Celiac site! Still cracks me up. I was at a party last summer and these two guys, one is 60 and the other is 65, were both acting out parts from the film which they'd recently just re-watched. Nothing more precious than a 60 year old saying "Are you threatening me???" and a 65 year old saying "settle down, Beavis!" Stephanie... -
ARCHIVED Pepsi
skbird replied to Ally2005's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ha-ha Nini! I always laugh when I see your avitar - my best friend has total Cornholio fits from time to time and is the funniest thing to see ever. I knew *someone* would know that reference... Stephanie -
ARCHIVED New To Gf Diet - Is Coffee Ok?
skbird replied to Lisa Ann's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I am a decaf drinker and have been told that regularly decaf coffee can have gluten in it but that water process doesn't. I don't know the science behind that or even if it's true but I try to only get water process decaf now. I have had regular decaf though and no reaction. Stephanie -
I have been using the Bob's Red Mill brand and didn't notice any problems with it. Then I read that it's not run on dedicated lines. But I have only had one package and maybe got lucky. I would love to find a brand that is run on dedicated lines. Stephanie

ARCHIVED Under Arm Deodrant
skbird replied to chelly1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Weird - I know I replied to this yesterday but I don't see it in there. I think deoderant can get into your mouth. Have you ever had a sloppy roll on that oozes out when you are screwing on the cap? Or stick that gets on the cap when you are putting it back on, and it scrapes some off onto the outside? Ever touch it? And then just maybe, you are flossing... -
ARCHIVED Pepsi
skbird replied to Ally2005's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ha - your topic subject made me think of a song - "all I wanted was a Pepsi!" Anyway, colas have a lot of acid in them (as mentioned before) and carbonation which upsets my stomach, too, now that I haven't been drinking diet Cokes for the past 3 years. I did have my first cola in years last week - Blue Sky Organic Cola - and thought it was great. Doesn... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease And Neurological Disorders
skbird replied to a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I find this thread to be really interesting. I have had restless legs my whole life. I never knew there was a name for that until about a year ago. My mom used to say I had "fighting feet" when she would put me to bed, and that she was always a little worried that when I got out of bed in the morning my sheets would be all bloody. I was on Ativan (tranquilizer... -
I'm not going to pan low carb diets because without them I would not have figured out that I"m gluten intolerant. But the best part of a low carb diet is the focus on whole foods (as written already). For me, eating regular dairy products, not low fat or skim, was a big help - first of all have less sugar and more fat in them so they keep you fuller, plus...

ARCHIVED Natural Stomach Healer
skbird replied to bklyn's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My favorite remedies are DGL Licorice (that's deglyccorized licorice which means it doesn't have the hormone in it that raises blood pressure) and aloe vera juice. The DGL licorice is so great that whenever I have heartburn it works better than Tums or Rolaids do. It's also better for you. When my stomach is in a bad way, if I take two about 20 mins before... -
ARCHIVED Teriyaki Sauce
skbird replied to mrsfish-94's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't tend to buy teriyaki sauces but thought I'd post a recipe I use which is very tasty. Teriyake sauce 1 cup gluten-free soy sauce 1/3 cup red wine 1/4 cup oil 1 tsp ginger powder 2 crushed garlic cloves 1 tsp honey black pepper to taste white pepper to taste Mix all the above ingredients. This is not a thick sauce but is great for marinades... -
ARCHIVED Coping With Co-workers Attitude While Dining Out
skbird replied to lpellegr's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Wow, Helen. You are the first person I've read who stated that it can feel like you've eaten glass, which is exactly how I used to always feel. I would wonder if I'd gotten some glass in my food when I ate out. It was horrible. These days it seems even worse than that but I still remember how horrified I'd feel when I'd think maybe I had eaten some... Blech... -
ARCHIVED Is Splenda Gluten Free?
skbird replied to sparkles's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I get pretty sick from Splenda - not the same day but especially if I eat it a few days in a row (or even ever two or three days). By a week into it I start having mind-numbing fatigue and headaches. But mainly the fatigue. Last time this happened to me was last summer - I was eating the Ben and Jerry's Carb Conscious ice cream, about a fifth of a carton... -
ARCHIVED Amy's Meals
skbird replied to mcle8232's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I only eat the mac and cheese as all the other gluten-free Amy's foods either have nightshades (tomatoes/potatoes/peppers) or tamari (can't eat fermented tamari sauce). I ate the veggies and brown rice bowl once but had an upset stomach after, plus didn't like the taste (it had tamari in it). But the mac and cheese has never caused me any trouble, except... -
ARCHIVED Symptoms That Go Away
skbird replied to Lesliean's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had a long tough road of various symptoms - mood disorders (bipolar, depression, anxiety), insomnia, fatigue, migraine, IBS, constipation, irritability, foggy thinking, and weight gain. Most of this has been resolved, especially the mood disorders, though I still get irritable pretty easily at times. And my female issues haven't sorted themselves out yet... -
ARCHIVED How Do You Make Then Understand What It Is!
skbird replied to roddi's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It turned out we didn't go to my MIL's for dinner last week but my husband came up with a great idea - we're going to make a crock pot of delicious stew then call his mom and say "hey, we made some stew, we thought we could bring it over and have some with you..." and that would take care of things. After getting sick last week from gluten and having it last... -
When I was first taking anti-anxiety meds I was given Ativan (for a week) then took klonopin for about 6 months daily. I didn't notice it helping that much but that was a really confusing time. Horrible withdrawl, too. I was then moved to BuSpar which is non-narcotic but still didn't notice any real effect. I had also been given Paxil but that made me...

I read a story in the news recently that said some inks in tattoos have mercury in them or other stuff you don't want in your body. I have a tattoo but if I'd known that before I got it, I probably wouldn't have gotten one. If I was to get another I would definitely want to know something about the tattoo artist and what kinds of inks they use. Stephanie

ARCHIVED How Do You Get Celiac
skbird replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm with Ianm on this one - I guess the only benefit I can see is for the "oops!" factor (accidental glutening) but then again as lazy as most people are (myself included) if I didn't react anymore I'd probably eat a lot more junk. Though at this point I may be selling myself short, I have been eating great food for 3 years now and loving it! When people... -
ARCHIVED Trying To Calm My Stomach Down
skbird replied to skbird's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Hthorvald - It's not something necessairly a problem for people with gluten intolerance but seems to be a problem for me. I had been noticing for several years now that if I had salad at some restaurants (my friend's deli, Outback Steakhouse, some other places) that I could taste something on the lettuce, very faintly. And then within 20 mins I would... -
ARCHIVED Ouch! Now What Do I Eat?
skbird replied to trying4faith's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I love that - "insulted bowel"! I had a bowl of hot cereal (quinoa flakes) and some cooked yam mixed in this morning and so far that seemed to be a pretty good idea. I have also in the past mixed cooked butternut squash in with my hot cereal. It's really good, believe it or not. Stephanie -
ARCHIVED Trying To Calm My Stomach Down
skbird replied to skbird's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Burdee - Thanks for the suggestions. I am trying to go the cooked veggie route and eat things like yams. I went to the store last night and got some but went by the gluten free section and saw a gluten-free Tuna Helper product (Mrs. Leeper brand?) and ended up making that for dinner instead because I need protein. But wish now I'd had the yam instead... -
ARCHIVED Trying To Calm My Stomach Down
skbird replied to skbird's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Wow, OK, I already feel better when you say 2 weeks. What a bummer! Of course this is already the longest I've had one so evidently they are getting longer with me... Thanks for the advice. I forgot that I had a yam for lunch yesterday, that was a really good thing. I'll probably have one for dinner. I just wish I wasn't craving all these other things... -
ARCHIVED Trying To Calm My Stomach Down
skbird posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hey all - I got glutened five days ago now and am still paying for it. I wound up with IBS symptoms and migraines and this is lasting longer than it used to (but the longer I am gluten-free the longer the reaction lasts it seems). I was at my chiropractor's yesterday and he worked on my ileocecal valve (between small intestine and large intestine... -
ARCHIVED Some Rather Graphic Bm Discussion Follows
skbird replied to Wandering Hermit's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I do, too. Supposedly it reflects fat in your stool so I figured I had malabsorption issues but my test indicates I don't. I don't know. Oh, isn't this fun??? Stephanie
