ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge While Dealing With Other Issues
domesticactivist replied to domesticactivist's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I like the cream of wheat idea. If I decide to do just flour I think I will go with the wheat gluten. I think I'm going to aim for 20 grams of gluten per day, based on the amount of gluten in 4 slices of bread according to this article: https://www.celiac.com/articles/38/1/How-much-gluten-is-in-a-normal-diet-and-how-much-does-it-take-to-cause-damage-in-a... -
ARCHIVED Quick Gluten Free Diet Test Question
domesticactivist replied to Nen's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I've got to agree with Skylark's post, and add a bit to it. We are very confident that my son has celiac disease based on clinical evidence. Even if he isn't celiac (defined narrowly as an autoimmune reaction, caused by exposure to gluten, that damages the villi in the small intestine and/or causes dermatitis herpitiformis) he absolutely can not be exposed... -

ARCHIVED Vegetarian Gaps Diet?
domesticactivist replied to granolagal's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I really don't suspect there is... and I cooked vegan for almost 5 years with plenty of protein involved (including homemade seitan - the LAST thing we needed, grrr!) I hope you'll post what you learn. Again, the animal based stock as a healing food is all about getting readily absorbed nutrition, not just about the protein involved. Raw egg yolks are introduced... -
ARCHIVED Vegetarian Gaps Diet?
domesticactivist replied to granolagal's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Exactly. Additionally, the diet is based on the idea that bone broth and meat stock are high in readily absorbed nutrients, protein, and fat. While veggie stock is a good thing, too, it's a completely different thing to eat nutritionally and does not have the same health benefits. I think taking some of the ideas from GAPS would not be a bad thing and... -

ARCHIVED Celiac Blood Test
domesticactivist replied to eborzecki's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Roda is right on. That looks like a positive for celiac to me. You have to keep eating gluten for an endoscopy, but my doctor would diagnose without it with positive blood work. While it can really suck to get a diagnosis that will impact your whole life, it's also great to have something that is managed without drugs! There are tons of great info on... -
ARCHIVED Vegetarian Gaps Diet?
domesticactivist replied to granolagal's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
The diet is very heavily based on animal products. There is no way todo GAPS as a vegetarian. In the book dr Natasha Campbell McBride has a small discussion of her take on vegetarian diets. My daughter was a vegetarian for 8 years before GAPS, exhusbamd was vegan for longer, and my partner and I were both vegetarian for a while. This has seemed to us to be... -

ARCHIVED Celiac Diet Trial Question
domesticactivist replied to Tarantula44's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I might cut gluten out, give it a few weeks, then cut dairy out as well. Then in a couple months do a challenge of each, separately. That way, if they are both culprits you'll get to feel better sooner, but you'll also be able to test them separately. You might consider soy as a potential suspect as well. -
ARCHIVED Social Situations
domesticactivist replied to Googles's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree with others that say if food is a part of work then so is your celiac disease. People will think you are being rude and rejecting them if you don't give them a reason that makes sense. It's not fair but it's true. Telling someone "I have celiac disease" or the white lie "I have food allergies" after they press when you politely say "no, thank you... -
ARCHIVED Quick Gluten Free Diet Test Question
domesticactivist replied to Nen's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Some people do see a difference but others don't without eliminating cross contamination. You could try gluten-lite,then, if the results aren't clear, buy a couple cheap utensils and cookware and see if that makes a difference. Your old stainless steel and glazed crocks should be fine, so if you have them you could just make do with them for your trial. -

My son got tested for septic hip, Lupus, blood screening for leukemia, and all those were negative. He ended up with a tentative diagnosis of either septic hip or a reactive rhumatoid arthritis to pneumonia. The drs did no take into account his past, persistent joint and bone pain, either. We have found that removing gluten removed all those symptoms, introducing...

ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge While Dealing With Other Issues
domesticactivist posted a topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
When we first went gluten-free (last November, for my son, not because I suspected I had a problem) I had all sorts of problems which I now think was withdrawal coupled with problems with "gluten-free" processed "foods." When we went on GAPS (last February) that all got better. Now, for some reason my digestion is very up and down and out of whack. I've realized... -
ARCHIVED Follow-Up Testing After Being gluten-free?
domesticactivist replied to domesticactivist's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Well it's November (1 year gluten-free) and I did take him in to our new doctor. She has ordered a celiac panel for him as a follow up, and is also ordering an ELISA so we can compare the results to the past one for what it's worth. My son feels a bit betrayed because I had told him at first that if we went as gluten-free as strict celiacs do he wouldn't... -
ARCHIVED Rheumatoid Arthritis & Celiac Connection?
domesticactivist replied to MESAs Mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son had arthritic pain on and off from the time he was very small, also bone pain and muscle cramps. Finally just before turning 10 he was hospitalized for what they thought was "septic hip" but later deemed a "reactive rheumatoid arthritis" potentially due to pneumonia. They saw indications in his blood work that it was autoimmune, tested him for leukemia... -
ARCHIVED Exfoliate Naturally With Baking Soda
domesticactivist replied to Ev7777's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I get my hair wet and then put some in my hands and rub it through thoroughly. My partner mixes it in a cup first and makes it more liquid. Then I rinse a bit, pour some of the apple cider vinegar in a cup and pour that over my head (head tipped back!!!), then rinse with water. Be careful as baking soda stings the eyes, and vinegar really hurts in a sour... -

We use baking soda instead of shampoo, and rinse with apple cider vinegar. It makes for soft, shiny hair. -

ARCHIVED Is A Contact Dh Reaction Ever Extremely Short
domesticactivist replied to domesticactivist's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Great point itchy! My son has gotten hives from numbers of things. As a baby he'd get them mildly from time to time. When he was about 3 he got them while playing in the back yard so badly that they covered his entire body in seconds and were huge and bright red. He's gotten them since then but usually it seems to be correlated with high pollen counts and... -

ARCHIVED Is A Contact Dh Reaction Ever Extremely Short

Yeah, I started wondering if DH is ever something that celiac people who never showed it before could develop when I saw his rash. I was really glad it disappeared quickly. It sucks to be itchy -
ARCHIVED Is A Contact Dh Reaction Ever Extremely Short
domesticactivist posted a topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Last night I was playing cards with my son and he kept leaning his face on his hand. All of a sudden he said, "I have hives on my face." I looked and he had a rash where his hand had touched. It did not look like the hives he's had in the past. They were tiny pointed blisters, all right next to each other. Then I realized the cards were old and dirty......
