  1. My daughter was a vegetarian from age 4 to 11. Ground beef (burgers, meatloaf, taco salad) was her gateway meat, which really surprised me. She still is particular about what meat she likes but now she will eat all kinds of stock and things cooked in stock, and she likes white meat chicken, turkey, and rabbit the best. It's a texture thing. She will also...
  2. Then don't deal with it. Enjoying each day you have now without delving into these issues is a valid choice. But if you feel like delving into it a bit: It interests me that you say that you can imagine that it would make you feel impotent if you faced the hand you've been dealt. With celiac disease, there is a way to take power over it - and that is...
  3. Welcome back, Suzanna, What I noticed about your post is how you are really being honest with yourself here. Where that will lead you I can't say, but I think it's a good first step to eventually finding some peace with yourself. It seems like you need to do a lot of processing - talking it out from many angles. I'm like that, too. I'm glad you came back...
  4. It depends. For my son, the symptoms from corn look like seasonal allergies. Any tiny amount of corn gives him these symptoms. It also makes him much more reactive to other things he's allergic to. When he had corn as a regular part of his diet he was always really inflamed, and his actual seasonal allergies blew him up like crazy. When he's off corn he can...
  5. If you just got rid of gluten and didn't replace it with "gluten-free" substitute stuff it could be that with the reduction of starch in your diet the candida or other bad elements in your gut flora are dying off. Die off is a good thing but can cause eczema to flare up, especially if it happens quickly. My partner's eczema flares every time we add a new...
  6. We were in the same boat and GAPS made a huge difference. It was hard to get through the first couple weeks, but then everything changed. This diet is very high protein and high fat as well. My daughter is 12.5 and the size of a small 9 year old so I can relate to being anxious about wanting to get your kid to eat. Now... she DOES!
  7. My son is allergic to corn in the typical IgE sense but he also gets bad brain fog from it. We are all better off since cutting it and all grains from our diet. We are now on GAPS. There are a couple great sites out there with lists of all the things that contain corn. It doesn't get labeled consistently due to not being a top 8 allergen. Sticking to whole...
  8. I forget what I'm doing or thinking from one minute to the next. I can't put thoughts together or make sense of things. My son can't read when glutened ( he was severely 'dyslexic' before going gluten-free - went from barely kindy reading at age 10 to beyond grade level in 3 months!) I get very slow and miss details. The kids totally lose focus/exhibit ADD...
  9. Yay! I'm so glad you spoke up and they were immidiatel responsive to the problem. Not only have you kept other celiacs safe, you have educated a whole store full of employees!
  10. They could get the biopsy through the old doc and find an ND for long term or complimentary care. My dr actually even has an ND! If that isn't Portland, for you, I don't know what is.
  11. I hate to say that my experience so far has been that it does get worse. Have you talked with your doctor about scheduling your tests yet? You may want to get your tests scheduled so that if it's just unbearable you can go get tested immediately if you stop the challenge before your 3 months are up. The results won't be as valid if they come out negative...
  12. Your reaction sounds totally normal to me It's hard to hear you have a disease and of course there is some grieving to do. Even if you were sick before and feel happy to finally know what's wrong and what to do about it, you will have some mixed feelings about it. That's true for almost everyone! The biopsy has nothing to do with cancer. Instead, they...
  13. Here's my 2 cents: I would also want to do the scope I'd be hoping it's celiac and also because there could be things besides celiac or non-celiac sensitivity going on that need to be treated. I'd also start shopping for a new doctor. You don't feel respected by this one and you need someone who will take you and your daughter seriously. However...
  14. I used to dance ballet and I would not be at all surprised if there was flour paste in them. They use a glue solution to soak the tips of the shoes in and form them into the correct shape before hardening, I'm pretty sure. Then they are covered in satin. I bet there is a "making of" video somewhere or maybe you could call the company and ask about how they...
  15. Thanks for the positive words, everyone. This was a big step for him since he likes to just be one of the guys with his friends. I was surprised he wanted to do it and am very proud of him!
  16. Advocating for our kids can turn us into evangelists. I'm glad your friend is getting tested! I see celiacs everywhere, too - or at "least" gluten intolerance. As for the doctors missing thing - it upsets me so much that people can be alarmingly skinny and told they are lucky, especially when they feel sick! It's so common and so wrong!
  17. My son has been part of our local public access radio station's youth collective for a couple years now. Every month, the kids pick a theme and do a show. This month, the theme was "The Letter C." My son decided to do his piece on celiac disease and cross contamination. He wrote it up and recorded it himself Open Original Shared Link This was a big deal...
  18. Just chiming in here to echo what the others have said - you have celiac disease. Even if you don't feel it right away, gluten triggers autoimmune damage which is *not* a good thing! I wonder if some of the variance in people's reactions has to do not only with the extent of the damage, but also with having different types of reactions as well. Some people...
  19. Of course parents "shouldn't" feel guilty over things like this, having done our best at the time. That doesn't stop it from happening to some of us, though. Hindsight is 20/20 and every now and then I can't help from looking back and seeing all the signs and opportunities I missed. As a parent you want to do the right thing for your child and it's just hard...
  20. This brought tears to my eyes. She's seen it for herself and is on the path to healing. I'm feeling very proud of her for you, though I'm sure you need no help on that front! My son also had an epiphany and there is no turning back. A year later he still has some emotional issues with being gluten-free and needs some support. But he knows in his heart...
  21. Good luck. This is not fun I want to say that it might make sense to explain to your daughter what you are doing. Of course you know your child best and she is quite young so it's different than with my 11 year old. Still don't eat it in front of her if you can help it of course, but explain that you aren't cheating - that you have to eat it to get...
  22. I don't know how precise the protein gram - gluten content connection is, there could be other forms of protein in some gluten containing foods. But gluten is the protein in wheat so that's how I decided to estimate it.
  23. I think it's been helpful for me to count the grams. I've never been a calorie counter or anything like that but with this challenge there are a few reasons it has helped me: 1. Our normal diet hasn't included any grains for a year. I just don't think to eat things like breads and pastas any more, and we have to buy them special. 2. The rest of the family...
  24. I agree dishwashers are safe and we have eaten off dishes washed in dishwashers at gluten houses without a problem. In this case it was a dish washed by hand with an old rag or sponge and air dried with in a kitchen where from scratch daily baking is the norm. It was a stupid risk to take, IMO, and there is nothing else that could have got him that we could...
