  1. Me too! I am totally gluten-free now but it's my hubbie who is the coeliac. I have posted about this effect on another thread (can't remember what category it's in but it's titled 'Gluten Free but don't have to be') Although I don't get any G.I issues, gluten has made me feel nauseous, break out in a sweat, palpitations and a weird tingling on my tongue...
  2. I think I can safely say it's not England!
  3. Just to add to Mulljac's post my husband had a patch of psoriasis on his knee for at least 10 yrs. This in itself was not a big problem. Around 5 yrs ago hubbie was dx with Psoriatic Arthritis. Nearly 2 years ago he was dx with celiac disease. Once he started the gluten-free diet ,the patch on his knee disappeared within weeks, and hasn't...
  4. I like that article too!A positive spin on refractory celiac disease if you like My husband has had a dx of refractory celiac disease as well, but interestingly enough the big 'D' is rarely a problem unless glutened. It is quite amazing how all coeliacs are different in their recovery rates. This quote from Karen sums up how I feel about hubbies...
  5. My friend has bought me some MAC eyeshadow and lipstick(and lovely it is too)but although I'm not a coeliac,I have seriously sensitive skin. I'm in the UK so wondered if any of you guys knew if MAC products contain any of the 'dreaded' grains? I know that some of my shampoos have really made my skin flare up(eczema)only to discover that they contain wheat...
  6. Rusla, I am a little upset at your choice of wording in using 'Mongloid Idiot'. My son has Downs Syndrome and he is no more from Mongolia than he is an idiot. It's an expression I haven't heard for many years and I was shocked to hear someone use it. I'm sure you didn't mean to upset anyone with Downs-it's just that the context in which you used 'mongloid...
  7. Ok!-thanks for correcting me
  8. Ummm, fraid not. Hubbie dx with Psoratic Arthritis 4yrs before celiac disease dx. As Jersey Angel said,if he'd been dx with celiac disease in childhood instead of at 40yrs maybe it would be different!
  9. Cystic Fibrosis involves excess mucus in the respiratory tract and the digestive tract. It is a genetic fault (and I think docs now know which one is responsible) Strangely enough my son was tested for CF as a baby(through a test called a 'sweat test')due to constant chest infections and the foul stools. Luckily he tested negative to CF. Fast forward...
  10. I think the reason why alot of people finally get dx'd in their 30's is because after years of their body fighting the 'toxin' (gluten)-it finally gives up and just can't do it anymore. This is when you 'really' start to notice that all is not right with your body. My husband got dx'd with arthritis at 35yrs and celiac disease at 40yrs-at which point...
  11. Hi Matt,I bought these too for 2 of my boys Both came out neg-but I'm not sure how accurate they are as it was only tested for tTg(not the full panel.) I was driven to buy these as my G.P in UK will not test them as they have no obvious symptoms(and admitted he didn't know what test to order!-didn't exactly inspire confidence ) Husband was dx...
  12. Hey Karen, let's hope it's not another condition you can add to your signiture! Keep us updated. BTW has your gastro ever discussed Azathioprine treatment? Keep well-Nikki
  13. Well my husband has got a dx of refractory coeliac. A biopsy after 6 months showed no progress-so the gastro put him on steroids. A biopsy after the steroids showed a miniscule improvement of his villi-*sigh* Having said that,-he's now putting on weight and feels alot better than he did at time of dx(Sept 04) Due to see doc again in July-I expect...
  14. Radman, thanks for the explanation of Gluten Ataxia in laymans terms. It's good to have a doc amongst us!
  15. Ursula,I see you managed to change your avatar-Nice Pic! I like being able to put a face to a name-although I'n not quite brave enough to do it myself!
  16. My hubbie gets this too (from haemmorhoids). I didn't realise it was caused by D!
  17. My sons blood results were borderline (scored a 7 ,8 is positive for tTg,and had a weak positive EMA result) Owing to the fact that his Dad is a diagnosed coeliac, his paediatrician has referred him for a biopsy. Just waiting for the appointment now. I should also mention that my husband had negative bloods, but as symptoms continued had a biopsy...
  18. I just wrote a long and lengthy post which just disappeared!(don't you hate it when that happens) Suffice to say Berneses is right. In the UK food which has levels of gluten between 20-200parts per million can be declared Gluten Free. Coeliac UK deem this level safe for 'most' coeliacs. There have been no long term studies on coeliacs who...
  19. For me Berneses comments sums it up for me.My husband was so very ill the docs were sure he had cancer or Aids.He had no quality of life(he was bed ridden) Okay, you may not end up with lymphoma,or it may take 20 yrs or more-but for my hubbie it's about the quality of life he had. He was also dx with Psoriatic Arthritis 4 yrs before dx of celiac disease...
  20. It's interesting that you say you had to 'work up' to be able to eat cheese again. After having gone on a weight loss diet a few years ago-and avoiding excess fats I now also find I can't eat these foods(i.e fried foods) without getting the dreaded 'griping' tummy pains, but maybe if I upped the fat content in my diet little by little I could manage it...
  21. Mmmm well I don't know if I would be classed as 'normal' LOL !but I'm not a coeliac. I've been gluten-free for nearly a year now, initially to support my husband, who was having a hard time sticking to the diet and was in denial big time. After about a week of gluten-free I noticed that my skin complaint of eczema was clearing up dramatically (it...
  22. For my hubbie it's got to be Brain fog Irritability/Paranoia Fatigue That's not to say he doesn't worry about D though!
  23. It kind of depends how much you want an 'official' diagnosis. If you continue to eat gluten-free then there's no point in contacting the doc because any tests would come up negative. To gain a positive blood test (or biopsy for that matter) you need to be eating a full (i.e 6 slices of bread a day)gluten diet.Anything less than that would affect results...
  24. I think I have this- Toes and fingers go purple (even in summer!) Interestingly my face is always very pale too,it doesn't even tan. This winter I got some chilblains on my toes (gosh they hurt!) and I am sure it's all related. BTW I am not a coeliac (my husband is-but I am gluten-free with him)
  25. My husband tried to make some buckwheat pancakes alittle while ago-disaster!LOL Yeah, I know what you mean about it being like cement, tasted like it too. Apparently buckwheat is made from the ground up seeds of a plant related to rhubarb, very distintive taste! Hubbie also tried to make a pizza base-oh dear!,might have served better as filler for...
