  1. Gfp,you've raised alot of points that I agree with. I read that article you mention in crossed grain-''there is no link between coeliac disease and depression'' ''They only get depressed through lack of choice'' Oh perleeze!.How patronizing is that. My husband has suffered from depression and mental health problems most of his life (I also suspect...
  2. -and they are only acting on the advice from CUK CUK say most coeliacs can tolerate Codex levels(less than 200ppm),but there are an awful lot of coeliacs who can't. I find the whole issue confusing. CUK also recommend that you do not eat more than 5 slices of G.F Codex containing bread. How do you transfer that theory to a bag of crisps (or how...
  3. Bully4you,I've had 2 Staffies-I love them, they are so daft. Brilliant with kids too-sadly my staffies died. They get a bad press, but they really are great family dogs! And yes,we still use the saying 'bully for you'!! Great picture of your dog
  4. I just coated the fish in G.F flour and I found that the batter stuck sufficiently- Happy Frying!
  5. Here's a recipe we have used before-not sure how you convert measurements though as we use different here in Uk: 4oz G.F Flour (Rice flour) Half a teaspoon of salt 5 fluid oz + 1 tablespoon of water Mix flour & salt in a bowl & gradually add water whisking until smooth. N.B-Keep the water in the fridge for an hour before mixing batter...
  6. You lucky devil!! I'm yet to find a chippy in our town who even knows what 'cross contamination' and 'dedicated fryer ' means! Hubbie really misses fish and chips. Well done you!!
  7. It is thought that if you have refractory celiac disease -the cell changes that occur will lead to lymphoma(cancer)-so yes,you could die-but nothing is cut and dried. More often than not the people dx with 'refractory' didn't get their dx of celiac disease until late in life,so are usually pretty sick by then. My husband was dx with refractory celiac...
  8. I always knew my hubbie was a super taster!(just done the quiz with him) He can't drink Coke out of a can either. He has alway's (even before dx of celiac disease) infuriated me with his fussiness about food, and all his tastes are bland, bland bland!!!(well to me anyway ) He does like brussel sprouts though Unfortunately, hubbie falls down on...
  9. ....I'd be genuinely interested to see what a small bowel biopsy would show for this person in around 10 years time after being cured
  10. I feel I've joined your club by default!(as I'm not the coeliac-hubbie is) I suppose I'm an honoury coeliac (I want that t-shirt) but like Debmidge I am affected by all that having celiac disease entails. I don't think my hubbie minds me 'dropping in' daily-as I've become his eyes and ears for the G.F diet, and over time,by regularily chatting about...
  11. There was no option for Negative blood work-Positive biopsy, and for the most part my hubbies symptoms were fatigue and joint pains (he didn't get tummy probs until a few months before dx)- & only a 2 week spell of D!! He likes to do things differently!
  12. TCA,my heart goes out to you-you're in a catch 22 situation. Is the G-J tube a gastrostomy (feeding stoma direct to the stomach)? Obviously any surgery is not something you want to enter lightly for Megan because of the effects of an anaethestic on her heart-but on the same token, she needs to gain as much weight as possible for the upcoming heart surgery...
  13. I'm sure others will chime in on replacement brand ideas for milk and ice cream-but as I'm in the U.K I'm not much help there I'm afraid. Regarding your pots/pans etc. All our saucepans are stainless steel so if they are used for cooking any gluten I hand wash them first-then put them in the dishwasher. I did however replace pans with non stick coating...
  14. Hi Mickey, To answer your question ,Yes I think it would help your Dad to go Lactose Free (for a while at least) Alot of coeliacs only discover they don't tolerate milk (lactose) too well when they've gone G.F. This is to do with the villi lining the bowel. The tips of the villi are responsible for releasing enzymes that allow us to digest lactose...
  15. -and she isn't a coeliac. She's 'wheat free' for whatever reason,I'm not sure.
  16. Sounds very similar to my friends little boy. By the age of around 6yrs he had to have 5 teeth out as the dentist couldn't save them-in fact,it was the dentist who suggested that he wasn't absorbing calcium. After seeing a paediatrician,he thought it was celiac disease, but bloods were negative. He was eventually diagnosed with lactose intolerance...
  17. My husband's been very thin all his life. He has now put on a little bit of weight on in the 2 yrs he's been G.F,after being dx at 40 yrs old, but his biggest problem is that he has very low appetite. He hardly ever wants to eat (the only time I've heard him say ''I'm starving'' was when he was on Steroids!) He's not happy with being so thin but...
  18. Didn't mean to alarm you that your little one would get arthritis-just that my hubbie had high sed rate even when arthritis was inactive. My son who is undergoing tests for celiac disease also complains his legs ache alot-I think it's quite common in little celiacs
  19. Well,a high sed rate means there's inflammation in the body somewhere, but doesn't tell you where unfortunately. My husband had arthritis and celiac disease. In the arthritis clinic they always check his sed rate-and whilst he's been healing on a G.F diet his sed rate has been a bit high (but no obvious pain or swelling of the joints). I have put it...
  20. Although when my husband was diagnosed we didn't replace everything(our pots and pans are stainless steel)-if they've had gluten in them(rarely)I hand wash them, then put them in the dishwasher just to be doubly sure. We did however replace anything with a non stick coating (gluten can get in the cracks and you can't scrub it )and definitelyget another...
  21. My husband is in the same boat as you! He doesn't have very clear symptoms of being glutened, and he has now admitted it would be easier if he did. When my hubbie was first dx (biopsy) he was in serious denial! He couldn't believe something so common in everyones diet and something he ate everyday could make him so sick -and believe me he was sick.He...
  22. Oh my gosh Molly, you really have had more than your fair share of medical problems! My husbands results for his dexa came in a couple of weeks ago (he's 42yrs)-it showed Osteoporosis (not sure what the score was) He has been on calcium/magnesium supplements since his celiac disease dx-but now has to take Actonel once a week too. So far no side...
  23. Yeah, absolutely, what a great analogy.Although it's my husband that's ill, obviously I am very aware of how his illnesses have impacted on all our(me + kids) lives. Interesting message board too, when I get more time I will have a good read through. Thanks Shelli
  24. My husband has Psoriatic Arthritis. Bloods were negative for Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Hubbie had a small patch of psoriasis on his knee-this lead the rheumatologist to the dx. Hubbie was dx with this 2 yrs before the dx of celiac disease, although when I think back, the stomach symptoms arose around the same time as the aching ,stiff swollen joints...
  25. Ursula, sorry you didn't get the dx of dh you were hoping for-but hey-nothing's changed, you'll only continue being G.F,and what do them doctors know anyway! You know,I've seen pics of dh absolutely on everypart of the body BTW-love your new avatar, your daughter & new granddaughter are beautiful.
