  1. How old is your son?? In really young kids bloodwork isn't very accurate from what I have read. And it's not completely accurate anyway. If you doctor is confident that everything else is ruled out you could research a bit on the benefits of a diagnosis. some people notice an improvement by eating gluten-free so never go through the biopsy. Some people...
  2. I've recently gone gluten-free and am seeing how fast the $$ will add up with buying bread. I really like Udi's bread. But between my son and I a loaf doesn't last too long! Has anyone found a mix or recipe that tastes like Udi's frozen breads? Is it more economical to buy the frozen bread or invest in a bread maker and flours/mixes?
  3. My 14 month old is going through a few tests. We've suspected celiac disease for awhile, but no diagnosis yet. Through some recent testing we did discover he is DQ8/DQ8 for his genetic test. He also is not absorbing food well all the time so they ran some tests and said he has a low level of pancreas enzymes. He has an average of 3 dirty daipers per day...
  4. I posted this in another area but thought I'd post it here also. Yesterday we found out that my son has 2 copies of the DQ8 gene. So I believe that means my husband and I each have at least a DQ8 gene. So then that would mean 1 of my parents has the gene and 1 of my 4 grandparents carries the gene. Is that correct? One of my grandmas has experienced...
  5. And another couple questions also... Since he has 2 DQ8 genes does that mean that his dad and I each have a DQ8 gene? I wouldn't think that it's possible for one parent to pass on both genes to him, but just checking. Since we now know that my son at least has genes for celiac I am going to try to get those in charge of my grandma's healthcare to at least...
  6. I had requested genetic testing for my 1 year old. We found out he has 2 of the DQ8 genes. The doc said this could put him at an increased chance to have/develop celiac, but that the DQ2 gene would make it more possible. If I remember correctly he said that he's twice as likely to develop celiac than someone without it. (There were other things discussed...
  7. My 14 month old loves those animal crackers. They come in 3 flavors- vanilla, chocolate and cinnamon. We haven't tried the cinnamon yet, but so far the vanilla and chocolate are pretty good (I eat them myself!). My son also loves raisins. Fruity pebbles are also gluten free so sometimes I'll make a "trail mix" of Fruity pebbles, puffed rice cereal, broken...
  8. Just a quick question about the Rice Dream milk.....it says gluten-free on the carton. Can it be processed in a facility with barely and be labeled gluten-free?
  9. Well I gave him an entire slice of whole wheat bread today and I'm not seeing any reaction yet. I would think that wheat bread would have plenty of gluten in it. Guess we'll see what the doc says.
  10. He hasn't been diagnosed with anything yet. Seemed like the doc wanted to wait until he was 1 year old to see if he continued having the reaction. I just found it odd b/c he's basically been gluten-free his entire life (well, was breastfed and I'm not gluten-free so not sure how much/if anything he got there). But any other time he's had anything that...
  11. My 14 month old has a follow- up appt. with his pediatric GI in a few days. He went a few months ago and the doc said to be on a gluten-free diet and when he's between 12-18 months old to try gluten again and come back. So yesterday I gave him about a third of a slice of wheat bread and I saw no reaction!! His previous reaction to rice cereal, oatmeal...
  12. My son isn't diagnosed with celiac, but it's something we suspect right now. He does vomit after eating gluten. He's only 13 months old, but every time he's had wheat/gluten he vomits about 2 hours later. He'll be fine for about 2 hours after eating it, but then he begins vomitting- and sometimes the vomitting can last 30 minutes, sometimes hours with...
  13. Someone that has celiac disease must be on a gluten-free diet or damage will be done to the body (whether or not they experience symptoms). In my understanding someone with non-celiac gluten intolerance could eat gluten and may experience discomfort but no actual damage is occurring. Going gluten free is hard at first but you get used to making sure food...
  14. I was able to get him an appointment with a new doctor and she is being very thorough. She thought his belly is probably bigger than it should be so she ran an xray and if they don't see anything on the xray then we may look into allergy testing. She's having us keep a food journal for a couple of weeks. He also has another massive ear infection- even...
  15. Oh, his intestines work!!! He has bowel movements a couple times a day. We did put him on rice milk a couple days ago. His belly might be a tiny bit smaller, but it's no drastic change. So maybe milk wasn't the issue. His stools have become firmer (he didn't have diahrea, but they were pretty soft). Whether that's due to cutting dairy out or the fact...
  16. I have a 13 month old that possibly has celiac. He began showing reactions to oatmeal around 4 months old (he's had a big appetite so we started cereal early). He had severe vomitting after Gerber oatmeal and rice, the puffs and some baby food that contained wheat flour. Testing at this age is not very accurate. I'm not sure the percentage of accuracy...
  17. He is on a gluten-free diet and has been for months already. Acutally, he's only had gluten maybe 10 times in his life. He's never been a baby that spit up a lot, so when he did after oatmeal that was a big red flag for his dad and I. I was able to notice the trend of wheat products based on his reaction to only a few foods. I think I'm doing everything...
  18. So I've been posting a lot today, but hopefully someone has some insight that could help me on this topic. I'm a first time mom and new to this whole celiac thing and I'm not sure what to do. My 13 month old has shown symptoms of issues with gluten/wheat since we introduced rice cereal and oatmeal. He vomits severely after eating wheat/gluten containing...
  19. We do put food directly on his tray often. It's the cooking with scratched items that's the issue? I just thought we couldn't use them in general, but I'm still getting used to all this celiac stuff.
  20. I came across an amazing deal on a high chair for my son at a garage sale. $20 for a practically new one in excellent condition!!! Couldn't pass that up since we've just been using a travel one. Then I got it home and realized the tray is scratched up. I've heard that cookware/tupperware that is scratched should be replaced because you can't get all the...
  21. I'm considering beginning a gluten-free diet but not sure if I should yet or not. My 1 year old has shown signs of some issue with gluten/wheat ever since we introduced solid foods. As I've researched celiac I have wondered if I have it and never knew it. I get stomach cramps sometimes (when I get them they are AWFUL), but only get them randomly. I have...
  22. My 13 month old may have celiac. He actually has reacted to Gerber rice cereal. I contacted the company and they can't guarantee it's gluten-free but said there shouldn't be any in there. But my son had the same reaction to the rice cereal as he did to oatmeal and other foods containing wheat. He's not diagnosed with anything yet, but since he did react...
  23. How long did it take for you daughter to heal? We suspect my 12 month old may have celiac or gluten sensitivity. He vomits (sometimes severely) after eating wheat/gluten. He also has a big belly. I know babies have bellies but even his daycare caretakers comment on how they love his belly. He was breastfed until about 10-11 months old. I kept getting...
  24. Not trying to steal the thread here....but you mentioned that people with neuro symptoms have negative bloodwork for celiac. Do you happen to have any info to back that up that I could take to my doctor with me? I've tested negative and do have the neuro symptoms.
  25. I had blood tests done for celiac that all came back negative. The following tests were run: TISSUE TRANSGLUTAMINASE IGA ANTIBODY ENDOMYSIAL IGA ANTIBODY SEMI-QUANTITATIVE GLIADIN PEPTIDE IGG & IGA ANTIBODY SCREEN IGA I see other posts about some people getting bloodwork done for celiac but not getting all of the possible tests done. Are...
